Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club
Played On 10/15/2017Reviews are True when it comes to Bunkers
Course was interesting. Very much target golf for most of the course. I fond my self repeatedly thinking they just said "hey, there some land how about a hole there?" This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just tight fairways and aggressive doglegs.
Overall I enjoyed the course.
However, the bunkers were awful. I didnt want to believe the other reviews that they were just dirt. They were. This is especially a problem as the course relies upon bunkers to punish bad shots.
Overall fun course. Certainly challenging. Due to desert fauna and tight fairways bring a few extra balls.
The Golf Club at Rancho California

I have now had two poor experiences at this course. I will note before explaining that none of my issues stem from the course itself. The course is decently maintained with standard Southern California Inland Empire issues (dry spots etc.).
My issues stem from two instances which were directly caused by management. The first occurred a 2-3 months ago. I was the first tee time off for the day with a buddy in town. By the second hole we caught up to maintenance who was changing the holes and the tee box. This is never a problem I have as playing early you often see maintenance. However, this occurred on every hole we played caused a 4 group back-ups throughout the day. To be clear, I have no issue with maintenance, I have an issue with management sending out golfers to a course that wasn't ready to be played, caused severe back-ups to the first 4 groups of golfers.
The second instance sparked this review. I played yesterday and was paired up on a hot deal. The round was fine with decent pace throughout the day. When I arrived at the green on Hole 9 there was a 4-some on the green of 10, a 4-some on the forward tees of 10, and a 5-some on the tips of 10 (also a 4-some teeing off on 11). The marshall drove to us and stated he had a proposition in which we could replay the front 9 since it was open and the back was slow. I was pretty upset as even with the hot deal I didn't pay to play the same 9 twice. Further, it demonstrates to me another example of how to mismanage a course. the 5-some should have never been allowed, they should have been broken up, and the marshall should have never allowed for a 3 group back-up on a par 3. It's funny, despite all this I see e-mails and posts from courses asking how to improve pace of play, yet marshals never want to force people along or make people, like a 5-some, wait.
Go play Cross Creek.
