Sub-standard

The round began on a bad note. We were paired with a father and his 11 year old son. Instead of playing the forward tees that matched their skill level, both insisted on playing the white tees. The kid kept hitting multiple tee balls. We were losing pace with each subsequent hole.
The fairways were threadbare and could have used a good overseeding and water.
Each cart had a GPS but constant beeping, for no apparent reason, was annoying.
The greens could have used a good rolling. Many of the previous hole locations were raised.

Greens virtually gunplay

Practice range closed. Cart path only though fairways were dry and firm. Greens were mostly unplayable. Grass was thin or non-existent. Previous cup holes were not filled and rolled properly. With these conditions, course should never charge full price or even Golf Now rates.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to Lion's Paw. Unfortunately we did experience 2.5" of rain on the evening before your round, so the director of agronomy determined we should keep the carts on the path for the day, to prevent damage to our fairways, etc. Regarding the greens, the greens have been reported to be in very good overall condition for early spring. Looking at other recent reviews on this site, I see comments like "Great Greens" just a few days prior to your round. So I am rather confused by the description you reported. In speaking with our staff and golfers playing today (03/26/24) everyone has told me the greens are still in very nice condition. I apologize we fell short of your expectations on this visit. If you will reach out to me at blong@oceanridge.com, I would be happy to work with you to find a mutually agreeable solution. Thanks again.

Poor course maintenance

The course apparently was voted as being very well maintained in 2016. In the interim, it appears to have been disregarded. Many greens had visible crabgrass growing on them. Others had bare spots. The greens were very slow despite having been mowed. For the most part the tee boxes were absent of grass. The sand traps were compacted, indicative of not being groomed in a while. The course layout was a challenge with water coming into play on most holes.

Rough

The course needs some serious TLC. Especially the greens.

A few greens should be totally closed and redone. Temporary greens are tolerable if the patience is rewarded.

The course layout is challenging.

Great course. Non-existent 19th hole.

First time played.
Course in great condition. Very challenging. Humpback greens.
Tried to get a sandwich at the turn (415pm)..Was told the kitchen was closed. Entire building locked up tighter than a nun's habit at 615pm.

Fun nine

The course offers a chance to use all your clubs. Some holes require strategic ball placement while others require finesse. Unfortunately a few of the greens seem to suffering from a plague of sorts. Large black spots decorate the surface of the greens. As one would expect in February, the fairways were very short resulting in tight lies.

A shout out to the pro shop staff, cart guys and starter for being helpful and just plain nice.

Who to believe?

This Is a follow up to a review I just wrote so disregard the ratings.

This was my first time playing the course, so I was encouraged when I read on the course website that the carts were new and equipped with GPS technology. When our clubs were loaded on the a cart, the GPS was missing. I asked the a starter where they were, he said in storage, having never been installed.

I asked in the pro shop what happened, asked skewed was told the information on on the website was incorrect and the fault was with with GolfNow as they controlled the website content.

This didn't make sense but I didn't pursue the matter at the time, but I will at ata later date.

Toughest greens

Fairways were so riddled with weeds an employee virtually followed us spraying. Bunkers looked like the sand came from the beach. Lots of broken pieces of shells. Greens are the toughest I've played in Florida. Extremely fast with lots of slope. This course is a challenge for any level of player.

The little course that could

An investment in course maintenance could make this a great course to play. Things like flag sticks that fit into the cup; greens that have clear evidence of damage; tee boxes that are not mowed properly. Without a laser finder, some flagsticks were camouflaged by the surrounsing trees and houses.

Somewhat worse for wear

The tees were very unkempt. Uncut, thin with many unrepaired divots.

This unfortunate flaw detracted from the playability of the course. The fairways were even and weed free. The bunkers were fluffy and the greens ran true.

Beware course hogs

Since mid-October, I have played here at least 6 times ans this was by far my worst experience. I played as a single behind a foursome who were very poor players. I waited on every hole while the group played "army golf". Power carts made play even slower. Not once was I invited to play through. On the 18th green, the group exchanged high fives...I doubt any one broke 100.

Abundance of weeds

This course is a great test of your shot making abilities as the fairways are quite narrow. The greens run true. These are the only good things I can say about this course.

The tees and fairways are very sketchy with weeds everywhere. This was my 11th round since arriving in mid-October and the conditions of this course were the worst by far.

An employee explained that the course was in even worse condition last year. Hard to imagine.

Thank you for your feedback. Our new Superintendent is working diligently to bring the golf course back to pristine condition but has only been in place for five months... With time, new cultural programs and attention to detail, it will get there.

Feast or Famine

I have been in SW Florida for three weeks and my experiences with the golf courses have been wildly divergent.

At this time of year, rates are starting to climb, so finding a reasonably priced course takes some time. Majestic was the least expensive though it took the better part of an hour to get there.

A cart was delivered me in the parking lot and I teed off moments later (booking as a single does have advantages.

The course layout was challenging if not spectacular. There hasn't been a lot of rainfall and despite watering, the course was quite dry. The fairways were cut tight and despite top dressing, the greens were running fast and true.

Majestic is a no frills course. No fancy fountains, serviceable clubhouse, basic cart paths and tee markers. However, if you are looking for a tract that will test yourshot making abilities, Majestic will offer a good test.

Listen to the starter

Sometimes, the starter at a course can be your best friend, but only if you listen to what is being said.

We were advised that the greens were quite contoured and fast. Truer words were never spoken. In my opinion, the most difficult aspect of playing golf in Florida is the bermuda grass used in the fairways and greens. As no two courses maintain their facilities the same, playing on bermuda may cause a golfer to go insane (if he/she isn't already).

The fairways here are cut quite close and so are the greens. This makes playing more akin to bent grass, something I am used to coming from eastern Ontario.

The fairways are generous, making errant shots not as punishable. While there is water on the course, it only comes into play on a few holes.

All in all, this course has something to offer all skill levels.

Fun course

Tis is a great course for the mid-handicap player. The fairways are generous, the greens are true and there's not an abundance of water that come into play. Sand traps are fluffy but the edges are not military sharp but more natural to the topography.

Playing from the blue tees provides enough of a challenge that good shots are rewarded, and bad shots are bad shots.

The course layout is quite easy to follow but local knowledge would help on a few holes.

Here's one issue area golf courses should take note of. As a snow bird, I am looking for a membership that does not require me to pawn my wife to cover the costs. I can play 4-5 times a week, but will not pay the exorbitant cost of private club membership either. The Naples area clubsmay not be experiencing any financial issues (yet), but I would suggest that the bottom line could be improved by offering modestly priced temporary memberships. There are enough snowbirds to give this xonsideration.
