Beachwood Golf Club

Played On 08/01/2021Better the 2nd time
Even though I played here earlier this summer, I could only recall one hole (the first) as I played again for the 2nd time. Like other reviewers, I found the cart paths to be treacherous, so I got out and walked at every opportunity. The fairways and greens were in pretty decent shape, considering the local weather these past few weeks. I did find some of the holes more memorable this time around. Saw a few deer, a fox, a blacksnake during the round. A pleasant place to play, and not too challenging for the friend I brought along. More open on the front 9, a bit tighter on the back 9.
The Sanctuary Golf Club
Played On 10/13/2020A golfing sanctuary
This was 3rd time playing here. I first played back in late 2019, then again in spring of 2020, while on business in the Canton area. First, I found the staff to be friendly, helpful, and very welcoming. Second, I found the course to be a very good test of golf, including some blind shots, water hazards, and a decent length from the back tees, which I enjoy playing from when able to (as long as it's not 7,000+ yds.). Third, the conditions of the tees, fairways, rough and greens were very good each time I played there. Overall a very good experience, and one that I have already recommended to friends who travel to the Canton/Akron area.

Over the last two years, on business travel, I've played all 18 holes at the Sanctuary, plus two more 9 hole rounds. First, I enjoy that the holes are not repetitive or boring, and that the terrain is a nice mix of level and hilly throughout the course. The conditioning was always very good, as was the pace of play. The staff that I encountered were always friendly and enthusiastic without fail. Actually hoping to play there again next week (weather and daylight permitting). I will and have recommended this course to a number of golfing friends.
Butler's Golf Course - Woodside Course
Played On 09/29/2019Return to a "New" course
Back in the late '70's and through the "80's Butler's Golf Course, in Elizabeth, PA. was a favorite of mine and my golfing buddies.Back then there was the 18 hole course, and the 9 hole course, and we always played the 18 hole course. It was, and still is (I'm told) very challenging, with the finishing 3 hole among the toughest stretch anywhere in PA. I'd heard years later that another 9 holes was added, and thus the original 18 was called the
"Woodside" and the 18 consisting of the old 9 and the new 9 being called the "Lakeside". Today I played the Lakeside course (my first trip to Butler's since the late '80's). First note; the staff was very friendly, and I was sent out with a twosome immediately. I appreciated the front 9 layout, but it was also obvious that it was a bit tired - it will need some TLC to equal the freshness of the back 9. And what a surprising revelation that back 9 was. It was an exciting trail of golf, utilizing Western PA.'s hilly terrain to maximum challenge. It was a real treat, and I dare to say that the last 3 holes here are the equal, in challenge, as the last 3 on the Woodside. I will definitely go back. They do need to enforce some kind of pace-of-play requirements, and the players need to start repairing ball marks - no exaggeration, I fixed between 5-7 ball marks on EVERY green. Still, I had an experience that will bring me back.
Boulder Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/28/2019A new "Must Return To"
I had a few people tell me about this course, and I finally got to play while returning from a business trip. Wow, Well worth the stop. The course was in fantastic shape from tee through the greens. The greens themselves were quick and true. It was the fact that while routed mostly through wooded land, it never felt crowded or pinched. There were times when the treeline required you to play a certain shot, whether it was a draw, a fade, or a shot to a certain point (dogleg) to set up an approach. It is well-bunkered, but not over-bunkered. Water comes into play in the form of creeks and ponds, some of which demand a carry, and other times just frame the hole to one side or the other. When I finished, I just couldn't get it out of my head for the next 100 miles home. It is now in my Top 3 courses in Ohio, and I will go back. Sooner rather than later.
Toftrees Resort
Played On 08/17/2019Must-Play in Lion Country
In the years my brother attended Penn State, and my many trips to and through the area, I never had the opportunity to play at Toftrees Resort. Finally, on a purely personal trip, I decided to make a stop here before reaching my destination, and I'm glad I did. First of all, I arrived about 45 minutes before my tee-time, and since there was no one scheduled when I arrived, the starter offered me a chance to go right out off the first tee. Of course I took that gift. I played an unhurried 13 holes through wooded corridors of beautifully manicured fairways and greens. I had no one behind me through the turn, and finally caught the twosome ahead of me at 12th hole. They invited me to join them through the finish, and as regulars, they were helpful in negotiating the last few holes. To my delight, the holes were challenging, and not repetitive in any way. Great elevation changes, doglegs, and slopes kept it interesting throughout the round. I plan to return again sometime next year.
The Pines at Elizabeth City
Played On 12/03/2017Enjoying the Pines
With a wide-open course ahead of me, and no one chasing me, I enjoyed this round immensely. The Pines is a challenging layout that is mostly open on the front 9, and more wooded and tighter on the back 9. The course was in fantastic shape and the greens were quick and true. The Pines is what could be called "flat", terrain-wise, but here, that can be a problem. With quite a few water hazards, the flatness helps keep those ponds hidden from view, so it is wise to give the hole a real good look before playing your shot, because there is danger lurking on what at first appears to be a trouble-free track.
The Club at Sunrise
Played On 10/17/2017Nice layout, wrong direction
First of all, at this price, the course is a good value, and it was in decent shape, and a nice layout. My only question is how two well respected architects didn't see the major flaw in the layout as it is . The vast majority of golfers are right-handed, and the most common miss is the slice (both statistically proven). So, with a wide, deep channel (Flood control) cutting through both nines, why is it designed to be on the right side on every hole from the 4th through the 18th. Play was slowed because you could see players in every group down in the ditch trying to find their ball. Just a design flaw. I was only there once, but some of my group found it a few times. If this layout was played backwards (from green - to - tee) the hazard would still be there, but it would be on the LEFT, and less likely to slow the pace of play.
Occano
Played On 09/16/2017Hidden Arnie Gem
On my 2nd trip to this layout, I was able to really appreciate what an excellent, challenging, and fair, course this is. The greens ran a bit slow, and the recent aeration and sand application was still somewhat evident, but this did NOT detract from the round. Each Tee box presents an array of fairway bunkers that offer you chances to pick your own line to the hole. The greens vary in size and shape, and are well protected, but will hold a good approach, and they did putt true to the lines and contours. Just wish this was a course I could get to a lot more frequently.
Cypress Creek Golfers' Club
Played On 09/10/2017A course to return to
I thoroughly enjoy this course, the design, the challenge, the staff, the conditions, are all very good. The design is excellent, starting out with a couple of fair - but not TOO easy - par 4's that allow you to warm into the round without much trouble. These are followed by a bunch of challenging holes that don't repeat themselves. Nice elevation changes throughout, well designed and well placed hazards ( #15, 16, 17) are the strongest challenges, and #9 is a beauty / and a beast. I will return to this course anytime I get back to this area.
Battlefield Golf Club at Centerville
Played On 06/22/2017Battlefield on the rise
I encourage friends to play here because I find this layout to be fun and challenging. Rolling fairways, incredible greens, water and sand, it has everything. I like that every time I go here I can see signs that they are still working to improve the layout and the conditions for the players ( I find this more important than a lack of a fancy clubhouse and pro shop, or less-than primo carts that I've heard others mention - those are irrelevant to the course and the pace of play). I look forward to playing there again soon.
Nags Head Golf Links
Played On 04/05/2017Day at Nags Head
This is, quite simply a beautiful seaside golf club. Not pretentious at all. Even though there are homes scattered about the course, you never feel hemmed in. The views of the Atlantic Ocean, Roanoke and Albemarle Sounds are a part of nearly every hole. There is no repetitiveness in the layout, and challenging holes of all different lengths. I will go back soon.
Kiskiack Golf Club

First time here, and I will go back. Easy access from I-64. Nice, cozy, clubhouse, friendly staff. The course was starting to "green up" from its' winter dormancy, and considering the heavy storms (and tornado's) that passed through on Friday night, it was still in good shape, and not overly squishy. The layout is nicely varied, with no repetitive holes, and great elevation changes throughout. Holes are framed by wooded areas, but not tight or crowed, allowing for finding and advancing the ball on recovery shots. Challenges from fairway and greenside bunkers, even a couple of water carries add to the excitement and shotmaking. If you are visiting Williamsburg, or the Hampton Roads are, you should play here. Cypress Point Country Club
Played On 03/11/2017A course of my own
Temps were in the low-mid 40's. I played 18 in 3 hours and didn't see anyone in front of me, or behind me, all day. It was almost heaven. I've played here numerous times and enjoy the layout. nice mix of holes, nice contouring (not hilly, but not flat). Tees and fairways were dormant but the greens were excellent, quick and true.. I will return to Cypress Point C.C. soon. Bill W.
Honey Bee Golf Club
Played On 02/26/2017Fine time at Honey Bee
I enjoy Honey Bee mostly because there are no repetitive hole. I played in the off-season, so the fairways were dormant, but the greens were in pretty good shape. The staff is always friendly, and today the pace was pretty good. Honey Bee won't challenge you with length, even from the tips (where I usually play it), but well placed bunkers, doglegs, and water hazards will keep your attention. I enjoy this course and look forward to playing again soon.
The Currituck Club
Played On 02/19/2017Perfect Day at Currituck Golf Club
This was my 2nd time here, and I look forward to the next time . The price, through an online special was a real bargain compared to in-season rates. The weather, sunny, mild, light breeze, was incredible for mid-February, and when I presented my deal at the clubhouse, I was greeted as if I were a valued member of the club. The course itself, beautifully situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound, offers views of both throughout the round. Though the tee boxes and fairways were dormant, they were very playable, and the Greens were in excellent shape, putting quick and true. Not one single sour note to the whole experience. I will treat myself to an in-season round here sometime soon, because the layout, and diversity of holes makes it a fun and interesting experience.

Wow. Beautiful clubhouse that fits in to the Outer Banks design and a real lookout nest that allows you to see the Atlantic Ocean and the Roanoke Sound, and Manteo Island. The course itself does not disappoint in design or conditioning. There is no "easy" hole on the course, as the shortest holes require good placement off the tee, and water, sand, and wild native areas make you think, plan, and even alter your strategy from shot to shot. Add some wind coming off the ocean or the sound, and this is a true "links-style" day. I will go back.
Thanks for your review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed your experience at Nags Head. We are glad that you enjoyed our course layout as well as our views. We look forward to having you back for your next round!
Hell's Point Golf Club
Played On 09/11/2016Good day at Hells' Point
Great weather and getting paired into a friendly threesome was a stroke of good luck, and pace of play was acceptable. This was my fourth trip to Hells' Point golf Course, and without a doubt, it was in the best condition I've ever seen. It actually allowed me to really enjoy the layout and shot-making choices. I'll go back.
Colonial Heritage Club
Played On 08/28/2016Colonial Heritage; A good day
This is the 3rd time I've played here, and it won't be the last. This Arthur Hills design is very enjoyable and challenging. There are no boring or repetitive holes, and the natural terrain (creeks, ponds, wetlands and ravines) and elevation changes, keep the challenge going. Despite the greens being aerrated ( which was not noted on website) this was an enjoyable day. Bill Wallace.
