The Shores of North River Golf Club

Enjoyed the course and looking forward to playing when it is in better shape. It has been so dry that the greens were a bit bumpy, but still in better shape than most in the area. Tee boxes could use some help, however, it did look like they were working on them.
Challenging enough without being frustrating.
Pace of play good.
Cranberry Highlands Golf Course
Played On 10/09/2019Very friendly staff
This course has been rated one of the best muni courses in Pennsylvania and I found out why. As a links course it is open, however being in Pennsylvania the beauty of the surrounding walls of trees keeps the course feeling cozy. I noticed numerous birdhouses and even a stand of beehives while playing the course. I discovered it has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Nice! The course was well-manicured and I felt every level of golfer could enjoy playing this course. No blind spots, which I particularly appreciated. If you are in the area, play this course. It is a gem. A shout out to the starter who was delightful. Not at all condescending of women golfers, as I have found in other courses.
The Arnold Palmer Signature Course At Stonewall Resort
Played On 10/03/2019Wild and Wonderful
The state slogan for West Virginia is Wild and Wonderful. On my quest to golf in all 50 states, The Palmer Course at the Stonewall Resort was a delightful choice for WV. I was warmly greeted in the pro-shop and given some tips on the course, which always helps a first-time player on any course. I would also be going out alone, as this was a bit of a slow time for the resort. The course is long, however, the 6 tee selections would help with all levels of golfers. The GPS in the cart was also very helpful, detailing each hole. The lush course was in good condition. The greens ran fast but fair. A bit of crabgrass on several of the greens was disappointing, however, maintenance was out trying to get ahead of the large areas of the nasty stuff. The fairways were generous which helped my game due to the fact if I did get into the tall fescue grass in the rough, I searched in vain until I learned to just "donate" my ball to the cause. Each hole was unique and separate, making me feel cushioned in the rolling mountains of West Virginia. Truly a beautiful course. And the 19th hole was great! Tried a new beer - 35 Parks, a WV Pale Ale. I recommend the course and the beer.
Southern Hills Golf Course
Played On 08/05/2019Very Confusing
The course was nestled in pine trees and lush grounds. The front 9 seemed non-descript and a little bland. Making the turn to 10, I climbed a bit to see the green below. A sign indicated "forward tees below", so I drove back down to see where to tee off. I looked all over, retracing my tracks and still not finding the tee box. A little frustrated I went to #11. The back 9 was more interesting and challenging, however, the biggest challenge was the layout - very confusing. It was a hot day, so the course was quite empty. I did come across one gentleman as I was again looking for the next hole - I told him I was lost. He laughed and said, "yes, it happens here often." There were interesting holes, challenging for good players and the front 9 tame enough for beginners, however, the confusing layout without adequate signage was the most challenging part of this course.
Three Crowns Golf Club
Played On 07/31/2019A Jewel of a Course
The course was in great shape! The tee boxes looked better than some greens I've seen. Water does come into play on 14 of the holes and the 84 bunkers make every hole a bit of a challenge. It is a links-style course, however, the mounds separating many of the holes help to seclude the hole. The course is very flat, with some scenic elements of the Casper Mountains. If you find yourself close to Casper, WY - play this course.
Blackthorn Golf Club
Played On 07/13/2019Quaint Irish-Cottage style clubhouse.
Driving up to the course, I was struck by how heavily wooded the area was and how quaint the clubhouse appeared, all covered with ivy. This was my only golf experience in Indiana, my 7th state on the quest to golf in all 50. Blackthorn did not disappoint. Beautiful course with hilly fairways and large, undulating greens. At times it felt as though the dense woods were closing in on the fairway. Several deer came out to check my shot and scurried back to discuss my form, I'm sure. On the 16th, a par 3, my two male playing partners disappeared up a path in a very heavily wooded area to tee off, luckily I could spot my tee box and see the stunning green positioned below. Most of the greens were quite challenging due to undulation.
Secluded in the woods, this course makes you feel miles from any development when in reality it is very close to civilization. Liked the drive-through barn. Happy to have made Blackthorn my Indiana course.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. Thank you for playing The Shores of North River Golf Club. We hope to see you back again soon!
