Great links style in Washington State

My wife and I played Wine Valley as out last course on a tour of northwest courses and were not disappointed in this choice at all. The course is a links style and the wind was up just a bit so gave us a little for fun to deal with but not so bad to not enjoy the round. The bunkers can get you if you let them. Be sure of your yardage and accuracy when approaching.
The greens are quite undulating but I must say we found them to be very fair in the roll and getting to the hole. The staff was friendly and gracious to welcome us to their course. I would recommend this course to anyone in northwest Oregon and eastern Washington.

Worth the trip to northeast Oregon

My wife and I played the Whitehorse Golf Club and were not sure what to expect even though it was out choice to play it as the Oregon rep on our USA Golf tour. While it may not get the large course rankings it maybe should as it was a well maintain and very playable course. They had recently punched the greens and were very upfront about that when I had made the reservations. By the time we played them the greens were in decent shape but still showing signs of the work. The rest of the course was in great shape and the layout was nicely done. The course was not crowded so pace of play was excellent. We did catch up to a slower group and they allowed us to play through with no issue at all.
The staff was very pleasant and with the conditions of the course I would say hard working as it really was in great shape. While probably not in the most popular place it is worth a drive to play this course if you are near the area. There is also a hotel and casino on the same property so can make it in to a nice little overnight if desired.

It's pricey but don't pass up this gem.

The CDA Resort Course is basically WOW. Yes you pay for it with a lofty greens fee but they deliver fully to you on a great golf day. We had a forecaddie for the first time ever on a golf course and he was a joy to have with us. Tristan, was easy to get along with and very helpful throughout the round. We were paired with another couple and somehow we all kind of fit into the same type of game and manners and that proved to make the day even better. The staff is amazing from the moment you get there until you are back in your car.
The course...well if you have heard anything of CDA then you know of the famous floating green hole which does not show up until number 14. There is a lot to keep your mind on before getting there and you should savor every minute and shot. The course is beyond immaculate and the views on the lake are amazing on every hole. Whether high in the hills and trees or down on the lake level the fairways and greens are fantastic to play to and on. Focus , focus focus can be tough as it is just a truly beautiful area and course to be on. They don't beat you up, they do want you back, but you still have to make the shots. You can score at CDA by paying attention to your caddie, focus and make the putts. The junipers can take possession of your ball if you get wayward so keep the eye on the goal after taking in the views.
Then you finally get to the floating green. It's a par 3 but all carry for sure and again I say focus and you'll get there on one swing(they only let you try two). Then you take your putter on the Putter for the boat ride to and from the green. Make birdie or par and you may get a certificate to show off to your friends back home.
If you're a golfer and you're in the area , save some dollars and make the investment. You won't be sorry at all as they make it a fun time of golf for you. Honestly we weren't going to play it at first but we are sure glad we did. It's a memory that won't go away and one we never would have had if we had passed.

Excellent challenging course...don't miss it.

Circling Raven was a real pleasure to play. The design and layout of the course is fabulous. You see the clubhouse on hole 1, 9 and 10. The rest of the time you are of in a golf wonderland of hills and doglegs and just plain great golf holes.
Fortunately we were paired up with a single player who had played the course, was extremely helpful in course tips and an excellent player. He helped make our round a nice treat of a day as well...we stepped our game up instead of bring his down. Along with feeling like you are the only people on the course you also are challenged on every hole. The greens are well kept, roll true and not overly difficult but as usual be below the hole.
There are a few holes with some interesting risk/reward choices of split fairways and angles to the green. The par 3's are lengthy but usually elevated so that helps the distance.
The course also has a casino and hotel on the same property so make a day or even a full night of it and truly enjoy yourself. We are glad we did.

Fun tree lined course with excellent greens and staff.

We played Buffalo Hills on a very clear but warm day. The opening holes have blind shots in all of them and can cause a bit of a slow start as you really needed to drive up and be sure you were not potentially hitting into someone. The staff did point this out which was helpful but playing it for the first time made it a bit tricky. After the first four holes this all changes and once you find the fifth tees, they are marked well but you tend to not believe them at first. The course then lines up with wonderful sight lines and play moves along fairly well. You had better be fond of evergreens as they line and guard just about every fairway. This adds a beauty as well as a challenge to this course.
The course was in excellent shape. The fairways were well groomed and the greens ran very true and quick. There is also plenty of elevation change in the early and late parts of the round.
The staff were extremely nice from the front desk, starter and cart girl (very important on this hot day). The starter had asked a foursome , who were actually waiting on their fourth player, if they would allow us to tee off ahead since being a twosome. They reluctantly agreed and ended up catching us due to those first four holes being slow because of the blind spots and on holes five and six hit into us as we were leaving the green. Problem fixed by letting them play in front of us the rest of the way for our own safety and of course waited on every shot. Not the cause of the course but one due to the seldom encountered lack of decency and etiquette of golfers. My only complaint to the course would be the fact that this foursome played with three sets of clubs. Never hve seen this allowed any where else we have played.
That being said and our fixing the issue if we were ever to be in Kalispell again we would gladly tee it up at Buffalo Hill as it is a very worthy course and now we have some basic knowledge of how to attack it.

Nice add on to our Northwest Golf Itinerary

We added Eagle Bend to our Northwest Golf Itinerary as we found an extra golf day in our travel schedule on our way to Glacier Park. It was a very nice and worthy addition as the course is a close proximity to Glacier and an excellent track to be able to play.
Must admit the staff was a little aloof but we got out right on time and after a early rough start on one and two (mostly finding the right tees for two) we settled in and thoroughly enjoyed our round. The pace of play was good and the flow of the course fun. It is always a little difficult playing a course for the first time in knowing where to hit on dog legs and some blind shots but there were not many on either nine.
The fairways were in excellent shape and greens were in great shape and rolled true. Nice use of elevations but not overly imposing.
Would recommend anyone in the area should stop in and give this course a go...you will not be sorry.

Fun round on a surprisingly out of the way course

We were pleasantly surprised with our round at Purple Sage in Evanston, Wyoming. As we continue our goal to play at least once in every state we chose this course mostly for the convenience of our travel itinerary. We have usually tried to play courses listed high in state rankings by the golf magazines and Purple Sage was not on the list but we took the chance anyway. We are glad we did.
The course was very well maintained and in excellent shape. The greens were extremely good to putt on. Very true and quick and took a few holes to adjust to them.
The fairways were wide and forgiving but if you got into the wispy rough then take your medicine and get it back in play. A very good use of the topography allowed them to utilize elevation changes and add to the beauty of the course. The wind is a major player and defends the course quite well especially on the higher elevated holes.
Overall a fun day of golf for us followed by a very good lunch in the clubhouse. When we checked into our hotel it was even suggested by the front desk that the course restaurant was an excellent choice for dinner. We would recommend playing Purple Sage if for whatever reason you find yourself in southwest Wyoming or nearby areas of Utah.

Nice course as the closeout to a three day outing

Boulder Creek Golf Club was the third course of our three day Grand Rapids package for our group of 53. None of us ever played it and most have never even heard of it so our expectations were along the line of being the third as a thrown in since we had played two very high level quality courses already.
Well Boulder Creek had a surprise for us all as it was an excellently maintained golf course and one that was very playable and enjoyed by all. The front nine is a little tighter and requires more accuracy off the tee and the back nine opens up more but that doesn't mean it is easier at all.
The course was a nice test for all of us and one that everyone enjoyed playing.
The course also has an excellent dining area as we utilized it for our ending banquet the night before playing the course and everyone enjoyed the food. The service was very good which is not easy to do when serving 53 people. Our group enjoyed the food so much that many of them stayed for lunch the next day after completing their round and that is a huge compliment to Boulder Creek as it is not something they commonly do on the last day of our outings as usually they are ready to head home. Kudos to the staff.

Top notch course that shouldn't be missed

Took our golf group of 53 golfers to Pilgrims Run and it was the first time for most of the group. Most of the comments back to us from the group started with WOW and got better from there.
Immaculate course conditions from tee to green and in between. Pilgrims Run may be slightly out of the way and off the beaten path but anyone wishing to be tested but also enjoy a truly great round of golf should make the time to get there.
The staff was so very pleasant and helpful in getting our group set up and out on time for what was just an excellent day of golf. The care given to the course by the maintenance crew is evident on every hole. Just pure beautiful golf. The greens are very demanding but also fair once you understand and take the correct approach to them. We used this course for our putting competition during a three day outing and it definitely showed who was who in the putting department. Many holes have some risk/reward and while the challenge can be tempting you had better get there as the risk can be very hurtful to the scorecard.
Would truly recommend this course to anyone wishing to have one of their most enjoyable days of golf. If you're a group leader then make sure it is part of any outing in the Grand Rapids area.

Great course, great staff.

We took a group of 53 golfers for an outing to Thornapple Pointe along with two other course in the Grand Rapids area. As the group leader I can not say enough good things about the support from the course superintendent as well as the entire staff at Thornapple Pointe. They went above and beyond for the entire group and it did not go unnoticed by anyone in our group.
The course was in excellent shape. Fairways and greens were perfect in every way. The course I demanding but at the same time very playable. We try to make sure our group enjoys our outings so we do not choose to play the longer tees but if you do bring your total A game.
Yes you encounter some fun modes of transportation throughout your round due to the course proximity to the local airport as well as some railroad tracks and a river that on a hot day can be busy with boaters. Our group found all of those things added to the charm of the round.
I can't pick a favorite hole as they all ust standout. You need to work and think your way around Thornapple Pointe. It's not a bombers course but also not one you would consider bullseye shot making as it just makes you use your bag and skills. Stay below the hole of have a very delicate touch when on the greens.
I would strongly recommend playing this course and if you are a group outing organizer then contact them for a Grand Rapids time to remember. We look forward to going back if they'll have us.

Fair course, poor management

Our round at Scotland Run started on some very poor side notes. The temperature was 95 and that was fine as it is now June. The problem is that for some reason, none of which made sense as it was told to us by course staff, was that it was cart path only on this sweltering day. That decision by management, to be cart path only, made this a very trying and souring day of golf. I'm sorry but it is going to be hot again this year and I don't think banning carts is the correct decision for your paying public golfers.
The course was in excellent condition and very playable. The greens rolled perfectly for us. The layout is nicely configured and has a great mix of degree of difficulty in the holes.
The cart girl was very nice and helpful after her first pass of the day in making sure we had wet cool towels and plenty of drink available. The desk person/ranger was not as pleasant in any regard other than to keep reminding us to keep off the fairways every time he passed by. There was never a reason for him to take the attitude as we never ventured off the cart path as instructed even though we didn't agree with it.
So bottom line the course was fine and worth playing (albeit a little pricey) but for this day the play should have been at a discount with the conditions presented by the course management decision. Or let the carts be used as intended. My suggestion is that if it is a hot day you may want to call ahead before venturing out and finding out you'll be forced to walk.
I will say I had an excellent sandwich at the turn provided by a very cheery server. Also I left something at the course after the round and did not discover it until later that night. Called the next day and they did have it and held onto it for me as we had to travel an hour back to retrieve the item and I am very thankful to them for that.

Excellent condition but tough course if you get to the rough.

White Clay Creek is a very true and tough test of your ability to keep the ball in play on the short grass. The Creek is evident on 17 of the 18 holes and you must carry it on each one of those holes. It is not always a small meandering creek either even though the carries are achievable for the most part. The good part is it is not hidden from you and can be negotiated but you need to play golf and not just hammer away.
The rough, on the other hand, is quite unforgiving and I am not talking about the high grasses you can find but the nearby just off the fairway and greens rough. We spent a lot of time searching for balls near the greens at the times when the green was not hit with the approach shot. Now some of this may be due to a ton of rain recently in the area causing some mowing to not be completed but I have a feeling it leans more towards just being difficult if you are not spot on with your game.
The greens were very true and smooth and quick. They don't look great in spots but at no time did the look deter from the roll of the putt. The greens were a pleasure to be on...we just took too many shots getting to them.
The staff were all very friendly and courteous as well as helpful. The starter/ranger was very pleasant and gave us a very good rundown and vision of the course....he was not wrong on anything he said. The cart girl was ever present as needed but also not overbearing.
The layout is excellent albeit too consistent in difficulty through the first 15 holes and then it seems to have been a quick finish to the end as the breather holes you have been hoping and waiting for all come at the end. You had better bring your best when playing this course but accept the challenge of it as well. We did not bring our best on this day and the course was a clear winner. Some of it was the golfers but some of it was the course and the challenges it presents. Pick the right tees and truly keep it on the fairway at White Clay Creek.

Great course , great staff, great experience

We have had this course on our “to play” list for some time now but either the weather or timing have not worked out to fit a round in during our travels between Michigan and Florida. Finally the stars aligned and we were able to get a round in and it will not be the last. The course is a very short drive from I75 in Valdosta and is worth anyone traveling through the area to make a stop for a great round of golf.
The staff were all very friendly, desk, starter, food and drink and all made us feel very welcomed. The layout and condition of Kinderlou Forest is absolutely spectacular. Every hole was unique but also very playable as well. The greens were in excellent condition and ran very true in roll and speed. No tricks or hidden elephants under the soft green carpets.
Picking a favorite hole is not possible for me as it was just a truly wonderful 18 perfect holes of golf. Do yourself a favor and stop in to play this course as I know we will again and again on our travels.

Great experience on a great course.

My wife and I played this beautiful course ofna great day in October. Temps in the 80's, little wind and blue skies. The course is in wonderful shape and just a pure joy to play. The fairways were in great condition and the rough is not all that difficult as long as you are just off of the fairway. There is plenty of places to get in trouble though with deep bunkers throughout...either greenside or waste ones. As stated the rough was not overly difficult but that is because they let the brush and desert areas take penalty strokes away if you manage to find those areas.
The greens were all very very true and in superb condition. The speed was just right on them and small undulations were true and accurate.
The staff was excellent in their care and attention. They have cold water stations every three holes as well as in the practice area and that is truly a nice amenity when playing in the hot Texas weather. On top of that the cart girl was very good in keeping her rounds moving throughout our day.
Butterfield Trail was a true gem to play and we are very happy to have picked it as our Texas course on our personal journey of golfing travels in the USA.

Sandia Golf is a sure bet

My wife and I played Sandia on back to back days , October 16/17 as resort guests. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. It is a course that is well maintained as it is in excellent shape from tee to green. It is a resort course so there is maybe a bit more room off of the tees but don't get too excited thinking it is easy as there are plenty of desert brush and bunkers to quickly take a few strokes away if you give it the chance. You can find most balls in the desert but recovery shots may be more difficult than the search was to find the ball.
The greens were very fair but also very fast. Fast was fine by us as it was consistent all day on every green. Stay below the hole or have a very light hand when putting downhill.
Cart person was ever present when needed and very pleasant as the rest of the staff.
Fairways are in excellent condition and quite undulating. The GPS system on the carts is excellent and very handy on some of those par 5's that have blind shots.
One of the distractions of this course are the great views of the area on every single hole. Each hole could be an advertising picture for the course as it was that beautiful. I was very glad that we picked this course to play on our USA golfing states tour. We will be back in the ABQ area and maybe add a few of the other course but Sandia will be a must play for us upon our return. We also enjoyed a fine meal and drinks after our first round of the week and it was delicious and refreshing as we overlooked the 18th green.
The only slight complaint that I believe they should address is the ability to store clubs for hotel guests. It is a 3 minute walk from the hotel lobby to the clubhouse but by having to keep our clubs either in the car or the room it adds waiting for the car valet to get your car and then drive to the clubhouse to drop your clubs and then go park. Yes it is maybe 3-45 minutes and you are on vacation but I just think it would go a l g way in the customer service area. My rating remains high regardless of this issue but it would be nice to return in the future and see this remedied.

Heavenly Harvester is a master piece of a course

Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes, Iowa truly makes the game of golf a few four letter words....or at least it did the day we played this wonderful course. “Wind” and “fast” are the two that come to mind first.
The greens are fast as you discover right away on the practice green and contrary to what I have seen at some other courses this practice green closely resemble all 18 real ones....fast fast fast.
Wind as in it blows most often I am sure as it was a very nice day that we golfed and the wind blew all day. The course is built out in the farm land of Iowa among a lot of rolling hills. Surrounded by live active farms with cattle and goats who are a curious gallery along the edges of some of the holes bordered with fences. Hole 2 you can actually try and cut the dogleg corner by going over the cows bet you had better be long enough to make or it is a cow keepsake. Hole 16 is the goat hole as the reside along the right side of this spectacular hole. The goats don't or shouldn't come into play like the cows can but don't let them distract as your full attention is needed for this downhill par 5 with a small stream running across the middle of it to gather in any long power drives (so be wary). It is probably my favorite hole on the couirse but you may find yourself liking any of the other 17 holes just as much.
The course is in superb/immaculate condition as it winds it's way though the hills with some neat elevation changes but not drastic ones.
Water comes into play often and you will need every skill you have at it's sharpest here but oh what fun. It is not cheap to play here but worth every dollar you lay down to have the honor of playing Iowa's top rated course.
We only dealt with the pro shop staff but they were very friendly and polite and warm in greeting us. We were not able to partake of the bar/restaurant afterwards as we were attending the Solheim Cup festivities and the Opening Ceremony was the same evening. If you want a truly remarkable golf experience then Harvester Golf Club should not be missed, regardless of the price as sometimes you just have to pay it for the honor of saying you have played the course.

What a great golfing experience

Quarry Oaks in Ashland, Nebraska lived up to the expectations I had for it as a high quality course. From our first phone call for help with directions since our GPS got a little wayward getting us there and they quickly got us on the correct path and we were there in plenty of time. We were greeted by a very friendly staff in the pro shop as they asked us where we had played and where we were going next. We headed out to the course and a great gold adventured started.
Quarry Oaks goes up, it goes down, it goes left and right. It all flows so smoothly and course conditions were fantastic. Every hole was a new challenge ready to be conquered. There were times when we felt like we were the only ones on the course as the course layout and hole separation made you feel like you owned the place.
Immaculate conditions on every hole from tee to green. The greens were smooth and quick but not killer speed pace. Kudos to the maintenance staff for their hard work to keep conditions pristine.
All the holes were amazing but the stretch that is along the Platte River were just spectacular. The holes were of the best design and add the views of the river in the background were fabulous.
After our round, which we didn't want to end, we stopped in for our lunch that was included with the greens fees. The staff in the bar/restaurant were extremely nice as well to us. Sharing some local area stories (the course is a bit remote even though only 20 minutes from Omaha). As well being attentive to our drink and food.
This is a course not to be missed if in the Omaha area. I know I wanted to play it again after eating our food. Thank you Quarry Oaks team for a great day.

Excellent course for the area with a friendly staff

We arrived at Prairie Green in Sioux falls, SD a few minutes late due to some unexpected construction delays. Calling ahead to the staff allowed them toi juggle a few tee times behind us and we were able to tee off 20 minutes past our scheduled time but with no effect on the tee sheet....thank you to the staff for handling that so well.
Prairie Green was a very nice course in great condition, especially for what looks to be a heavy amount of play. The course was full but the pace of play moved right along and we were done in four hours and ten minutes which I think is good for a Saturday afternoon on a good public course.
The maintenance team must be good at what they do as the greens were in great shape amd very honest in the roll. Not overly quick but not slow either, so a good honest speed. Fairways were well defined and cut nice. The rough was thick (not deep though) so my rescue club got a workout for this round. Luckily that club and my swing finalkly started to show up on our trip. Not that I ever can blow away a course but results were getting better here at Prairie Green.
Was nice to see some slight elevation changes as we hadn't seen a hill on our drive from North Dakota to South Dakota. Nor had we seen one in our North Dakota round. The elevation changes were not huge things but added to the course quality and challenge. The wind was down today but I am sure it adds a few strokes a round when it is up.
Fellow players and staff were all very pleasant to deal with. Had a quick but good sandwich at the turn which was the extent of amenities we used. I would play this course again if ever in Sioux Falls.

Nice little course in an area where there aren't many to choose from

We arrived at Bois de Sioux Golf course a bit weary and harried as it had been a test of a day in that we had played early in the morning in the Twin Cities area and then drove to North Dakota for our next round on our trip. Our original 1:30 PM tee time was graciously moved twice during the day by the staff and we finally got off at 4:30 PM.
There is nothing fancy about Bois de Sioux. Just a straight up golf course that gives you the chance to go get it. Not that there isn't trouble as somehow those trees lining the fairways often seemed to be in the wrong place...lol. The course was in very good condition with surprisingly quick true greens that were in wonderful shape. Again no tricks to the greens but they were very fair to your stroke.
The front nine is a little more open to shots where the back nine was a little tighter so more premium to the tee shot on the back nine (which is actually in Minnesota). It is a very flat course but then so is Eastern North Dakota ( we had never been to the state until this day).
The staff and other players we came across were all very nice and friendly as well as the staff being very understanding of our schedule in getting this course into our trip itinerary. We did not eat as planned do to being exhausted from the overall day. I would play it again if given the chance but it would be the only round the next time.

Definitely was worth the trip and wait

My wife and I arrived at the Meadows at Mystic Lake on Wednesday afternoon, August 9, to begin our tour of the upper midwest states and it was raining very steadily. The staff was so very nice to us as we reviewed the weather status and there was no way we were getting out that day. The next day they were totally booked with an outing but told us we could be first off at 6:50 am on Friday.
Friday morning, very early, we arrived at the course and there was our cart already loaded with our clubs to begin the day. The best carts we have been in for a very long time. Off we went to play this challenging course which even after the rain the past two days was still in immaculate condition. The greens were very quick even though I expected a little slowness due the rain and early morning start (afternoon and dry they must be very fast). Some nice gentle elevation changes throughout the round but nothing extreme. Every thing about the course was fantastic. Lots of water and bunkers to go in and high meadows grass if you are not straight.
While we did not put forth our best exhibition of golf this morning this is a course we are glad we picked to play. Just beautiful surroundings and great conditions. The staff was excellent in everything they did for us and the maintenance guys have to be great to keep this course looking like it did.
The course is attached to the Mystic Lake Casino/Hotel, where is where we stayed , played and ate for two nights before finally getting the chance to play the course. Everything was as good in the hotel/casino as it was on the Meadows. Thanks for a fun few days.
