Under rated Golf Club; lucked out big time!

Spent the night in AC so was in the area looking for a new course. Due to weather I had the course to myself mid-day on a wet Sunday round. Challenging, yet fair layout for links style. Greens were immaculate at the time and responding beautifully due to the steady light rain. Thanks to the friendly staff and starter, as well as the ranger/manager riding the course, I got some good advice on where and how to hit em. Some beautiful holes, especially the Par 5s with a couple of choices off the tee and blind approaches. Shot 1 under on the back 9; they have some more get-able holes i.e. par-5 14th, and 15/16 across the road. Interesting layout and can imagine the angles and choices of approaches are much more limited when things dry out; these greens must roll really quick and are tough to hold when the wind picks up. I wouldn't suggest playing from the tips unless you're a true low handicapper; these guys saved me by telling me to play from the regular back tees. Must be tough sledding when you have steady 15-18 mph wind on a typical day. Just going off my first experience, I will definitely be back later this year to see how fair it plays on a dry day. I've played several links style courses but in general this was definitely my best experience in Atlantic county. It trumps Twisted Dunes and probably a better bang for your buck than the Bay course at Seaview if your anywhere near or above intermediate level player.

Good Value, terrible pace

Good value especially twilight slots after 3 pm. Well kept course overall. Nice length and amount of challenges for the average golfer. Not too tough or long, but not as short and boring as a course like others near by. Staff is friendly yet seem to think certain things they do are normal that are a bit ridiculous to most people. Greenskeeper on 2 separate occasions was watering the green on 3rd hole short par 3 as I tee my ball up I had to wait for him to move. Only to have him continue watering 10 feet from us as we try to putt out. Sort of ridiculous on a Sunday afternoon when it is most crowded. Expect a 5 hour round on weekends no matter the size of your group in the summer. I wish they would throw 1 or 2 more minutes between tee times. But it seems the staff feels it is completely appropriate to always be 15 to 30 minutes behind schedule and have 5 or 6 groups jammed on the first 2 holes which are short par 4s. I know it seems like I am killing them here but it really is a good value and fun course. Greens are fair speed could be faster but certainly roll smooth and are true. Played here a few times and the best was after heavy rain throughout the weekend in late June...because course emptied overall not a ton of people came out and it drained really well with few low spots of standing water. Will play here consistently but try to avoid the busiest times as it can get brutal.

I am new to golf now, so I only have a few registered tee times to my name here. But I have played this course about 9 or 10 times (only 2 morning tee times but almost same experience as mid afternoon) as a part of a group or just a 2-some dating back to 2013... and I love it! I believe it is an absolutely perfect course for most public golfers, especially at the intermediate skill level.
I decided to make a review because of my overall good experiences, but also wanted to note, and agree with dozens of others posting about the pace of play issue.
If you do get off on time at Mattawang, the pace of play will almost always lag behind on the front 9, while naturally opening up a bit on the back 9. During all of my visits I have never, nor has a friend ever noticed a ranger or even the starter monitor for pace of play. Perhaps the course only finds it necessary to monitor in the mornings when it is more busy & they have the staff available to do so, especially on weekends...
Overall good experience and very neat course. Staff is plenty friendly and helpful. I will continue to play regardless of the time or day since it is always a good value!
The purpose of my review is to alert other golfers on both positives and negatives who are thinking about trying this course; Not to complain about the service or anything.

Thanks for playing Mattawang.

Just to address some of your comments. You scheduled a 3:30 tee time and went out on time not behind schedule, nor have we been behind schedule since winter frost delays.

The later afternoon is not the busiest time of day and the only time our grounds crew can properly water the greens when they need it most. I am sorry they got too close but it is a tough time of year for the crew.

I am sorry you think the staff has some ridiculous ideas but I can assure you those ideas are to help deliver the best product possible to the golfers and also accommodate the many golfers that now enjoy the club.
