Elkhorn Valley Golf Course

Played On 05/27/2021Good value, mediocre course
The course layout is quite frequently non intuitive, giving multiple chances to get lost moving to the next whole. The course was not in great shape, bare patches of mud around the greens, etc. Not terrible condition but could be improved. Some holes were really good but others were right up against another one (with little to no buffer between fairways), or along roads or houses. Those holes were stressful and not in the normal stress one anticipates in golf.
Sammons Golf Course
Played On 06/04/2020A course is a course, of course. But this course needs work
The course itself was decent, but everything else was poorly managed and vexatious. There are few to no signs directing from one hole to the next, which in several cases is a big problem. The carts have a GPS system that tells you if you're leaving the next hole, and several holes are some distance apart with virtually no direction signage to help new players navigate.
Second problem: The carts had a kill switch if you drove them where you weren't supposed to, which is understandable. The problem is that this was not communicated beforehand, so I found out the hard way, and these areas were not marked; some fairways were off-limits and others weren't so it was a crapshoot when you might have the cart die on you. Worse, the kill-switch prevents you from driving the cart back to the path so you have to push it a foot at a time before the automatic brakes stop. You try to push it ten feet and it can take 5 minutes of exertion. Ridiculous!
Lastly, this isn't strictly the course's fault but there was a foursome in front of me playing slowly and didn't let me through though I was playing solo in a cart and would have been past them in 5 minutes. Better reminders about etiquette and courtesy might address this issue.
In all, the course itself is fine, but the management and so forth leave much to be desired.
Cleburne Golf Links
Played On 08/11/2016Good Course, Bad Timing
The course itself was excellent, in great shape mostly. Thick rough that sometimes ate the balls, making them hard to find, but usually escapable. There was a junior tourney that slowed the pace down to a crawl, which was tortuous in the triple digit heat. If you avoid the days when anklebiters are running around, it would be a great course to play.
James Connally Golf Course
Played On 09/01/2013Cheap, not the best condition, fast play
The course itself is a fairly typical Texas course in summer: brown sparse grass on most fairways, tall wispy rough, a smattering of trees. The greens are slow but green. The course is usually fairly deserted and therefore facilitates fast play; I was done in under 2.5 hours playing by myself and I played 2 balls on the majority of holes. The price is very economical purchased through GolfNow, especially the hot tee times. The staff is friendly. Difficulty-wise, it's not the most challenging of courses; several par-5s under 500 yards means with the hard-baked earth reaching the green in two is not unfeasible. If you want a high-quality look elsewhere, but if you just want to play golf, this is a good option.
