Enjoyable course

Stonewall is a challenging layout with water and sand hazards. Slope ratings are pretty high (137 for the white tees which were around 6,300 yards). Some holes required long shots over water or ravine type hazards, so it's best suited for lower handicapped players. Pace of play can be an issue, but we got around in 4.5 hours (no rangers). Conditions were generally good. Fairways were nice and the roughs were thick. Greens were nice and reasonably quick, although there were many not-repaired ball marks. The sand traps need more sand.

Management issue?

This is a very good and very scenic golf course. It's a Jack Nicklaus design and is very challenging. It's a shot maker type course as there are several carries over trouble, and almost every green is elevated and well protected by sand bunkers. I happened to have a pretty good round, and truly liked the course and the challenge. When we played (Sunday, May 28, 2017) the course was in reasonably good condition, although the greens had many not-repaired ball marks and sand traps were not well sculpted. Some were not raked. However, the fairways and roughs were in good condition and the cart paths were well maintained. Our biggest issues were lack of adequate signage between holes, and even some confusion on the location of the 1st hole. We got lost between the 2nd and 3rd hole (no signs) and had to ask the group behind us for directions (there are long distances between holes). We let that group play through so we had someone to follow....which was a good thing as there were other opportunities to get lost. Another issue is shot placement. There were no aids to indicate the best place for a drive, or how to play the hole. Given the price for greens fees there should be at least a map, and probably a book for player guidance. As these should be easy fixes our conclusion was that this course has a possible management issue.

Good review. They do have a yardage book available (I got mine on May 14th, so it should have been available when you were there), so there are answers to the issue you had with shot placement etc.
