This was my first time to play the Prospector course and despite the positive reviews I was a little apprehensive due to it being a Palmer course. I was really surprised. I found the fairways had plenty of width and the trees, though the lined the fairways were really background scenery and only came into play after really errant shots. The night before saw a ton of rain dropped on the course but the greens showed no effect and only low spots on the fairway were problem areas that needed to be avoided with the carts. The greens were actually really firm and almost would show divots. The only negative to course condition would be some of the greens seem to have issues with fungus and maybe suffered from a hard winter. We had beautiful weather for 16 holes and then a thunderstorm rolled in over the mountains. We finished before the heavy rain started by there was a little electricity in the atmosphere. With regards to the weather while we waited on the shuttle back to the lodge my wife overheard on of the staff ask if they should sound the weather alert to which on the staff members replied, "They're out there. They can see it." Not good.

The course conditions today were very great. Langdon is a very walkable course with really no significant elevation changes from tee to green and only one slight hill from a green to a tee. Greens were excellent and playing the ball up in the fairways was not an issue. Langdon has some of the best year rounds conditions in the Portland metro. I really have only two issues with the course conditions. The biggest issue of the two is the quality of sand in the bunkers. Mainly most bunkers do not have enough sand and often they are compacted from what I'm guessing his mis-aimed fairway irrigation. The second issue is not a major issue but some of the tee boxes could stand to be leveled. This seems to really on an issue with some of the right hand sides.

First time to play

I played here today for the first time since the converted the old course into the par three course. I was playing with my wife. I was really impressed with the quality of the tee boxes and the greens since I don't think the course is even two years old. The greens were really large for a par three course and had lots of undulation. They are large enough that they have two pin positions so you can play to different pins if you play 18 holes. Today was a beautiful day and even though the course was full, we played nine holes in around 1:30. We had lunch at the grill and I had one of the best mushroom and swiss burgers I have ever had. We will definitely be returning to Colwood.

Golfnow First

My wife and attempted to play this course today. We first played this course three years ago shortly after we moved to Portland. While the course and it's conditioning were nothing to shout about, it was a perfect place to take my wife who's learning the game. The course isn't that hard and there weren't a lot of players so she wasn't intimidated. We also love it's rural setting. She really had fun and I enjoyed just trying to hit golf shots on a course. So needless to say we were really looking forward to playing there today. I made our tee time last night after purchasing a "hot deal". Today about 3 hours before are tee time, I received a phone call from the course informing me they were not going to honor my Golfnow tee time. I tried to get an explanation of why, but due to the heavy accent of the gentleman calling it was a challenge just communicating with him. He was becoming aggitated as I was trying to understand what was going on, so I told him I would call golf now and hung up. I called Golfnow and explained the situation. I was informed they would need to contact the course before I could be refunded and placed me on hold. They were unable to reach anyone at the course and restated they would need to do this before I could be refunded. Fortunately I still had the number from the call saved on my cell phone. They were able to reach the gentleman and confirm my story. They were also told that the course claims they are no longer partnering with Golfnow, which was news to them. Needless to say I won't be making any tee times at St Helens in the future. I'm just grateful I was called before we had left. I would have really hated to go through this mess at the pro shop or in the course parking lot.

Spring round

The greens have healed nicely from the aeration this spring and were rolling nice. The fairways were firm for this time of year. I found myself in a couple of fairway bunkers and there wasn't much sand. I think the Greenback could really benefit from leveling a lot of the tees. The tees are a nice size and provide plenty of room to move the markers around, but they were placed in some pretty unlevel positions today which basically forced all the golfers to one side if they wanted a level lie for their tee shots.

First time to play

While this course was not long, less than 6000, it was still a challenge. The greens are relatively small but there is not a lot of undulation in them. The par threes are pretty strong here. I found it interesting the greens were much softer than the fairways after a very wet Feb and early Mar. Some of the doglegs are a little quirky. This may not be such an issue in the summer when there is run on the ball. But with the soft conditions of the rainy season, reaching the dogleg on a couple of the par 5's required an above average length drive. This made layups a little awkward and challenging. As a bonus, you are treated to some great views of Mt Hood throughout your round. I was told by a regular I was paired with that rounds can be a little slow during the summer. I think this course would be great for couples and beginning golfers. I'm anxious to play this course during the summer when things dry out.

1st time on the Greenback

I really enjoyed the Greenback. I had heard a lot about it but this was my first time to play it. It seems like most people overestimate the easiness of the Greenback. Compared to the Great Blue it is easier, less water hazards. There are trees, so if your drives don't find the fairway, you may have tree issues. Since it was January we played the white tees. I think the back tees would really add to the challenge of the course. The greens were large and in good condition. They were very fair, no crazy undulations. Since its been a dryer than normal winter, I can't comment on how the course drains. Overall I was very happy with the Greenback and I can't wait to play it this summer.

I little of something for all skill levels.

Stone Creek is a great course for all skill levels. Most of the holes still require you to drive it straight, but if you are crooked, most of the time you can find your ball and still have a chance to advance the ball a fair distance. The greens were in great shape when we played. They also do a great job of not over watering the fairways. Stone Creek is very walkable with only a couple big climbs on the back nine.

Friday Hot deal surprise.

I played here today for the first time. I had heard great things about this course ever since we first moved to area 18 months ago. I was a little reluctant to make my first round here during the wet season. But at $18 I couldn't resit. I am so glad I didn't. What a fun challenging layout. While I am not a fan of courses with houses along the fairways, these homes are really not an issue. So if you're having one of those crooked driving days, you don't have to stand on the tee worried about taking out a window. The fairways were soft, but I didn't have any balls plugged and there was plenty of grass on them. The bunkers were well maintained for this time of year and had plenty of sand. I was really impressed with the quality of the greens for this time of year. They were in great shape. Nice pace and rolled great. We played the commander tees. I have never experienced this. On certain holes your moved to the forward tees. Made the day fun since neither of us are really long and this time of year there is no run on your drives. I will definitely be back. It's worth the drive.

Fun test

This was the second time for me to play here this winter. The course was dryer this time, but still very soft. The course is under new management and appear to be making plans for improvement. The course is an unusual par 73, 36-37. There is only one par three on the back nine. There are a couple of short par fours, this played from the right tees are a fun risk reward challenge. I anxious to play here this summer and play under dry conditions.

Challenging Course

This is a challenging course. Course knowledge is a great advantage, especially on holes like 6, 9, and 12. Those who like to walk might consider taking a cart. There are some very steep hills. I was a little disappointed in the conditions of the greens. There seemed to be a lot of damage from ball marks that hadn't been repaired or repaired poorly. Some of the bunkers needed to be raked. I would play this course again and would recommend it to someone looking for a strong challenge.
