Played On 07/26/2020Not really a links course
I'm a 10 handicap and have played this course twice from the blue tees. I wasn't completely on my game with the putter, but was striking the ball okay and shot 87 and wasn't really disappointed with that score. A bit about the course:
From the blue tees, this course plays long (6650 yards) For example: 225 yard steeply uphill par 3, 625 yard uphill par 5, 208 downhill par 3 with mounds in front of the green that will kick your ball away, and a 445 yard par 4. This course isn't easy. The extra length from these tees, which feel appropriate for my skill level, is about 200-300 yards longer than I would prefer and makes the course a bit confusing. The green tees are 600 yards shorter. Something in the middle (6300-6400 yards?) would be better.
This is not really a links style course as the fairways / greens are not fast enough, hard enough, or flat enough to get the ball running. So you are often flying the ball in, and then you are pretty much at the mercy of your landing position (1 or 2 yards one way or the other can have you getting a straight bounce or a hard bounce to the side. The course is nice, and demanding, but doesn't necessarily reward good shots in the same way some other courses do. There are no tricky tee shots or approaches that you can reliably know where you can or cannot be. It is simply asking you to pound your way to the green, and then putt like your life depended on it.
Today, the bunkers were in pretty rough shape. I know a lot of courses have been struggling to keep their bunkers nice after COVID, but these are in worse condition than I have seen at many other courses in the area. Pretty disappointing for a $75 greens fee.
Overall, worthwhile to play ... but not a course I would go wildly out of my way for, or one that I would want to be playing frequently.
