Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
Played On 11/24/2018Hurt So Good
The morning rain didnt seem to slow the greens very much, but did make them softer. Drainage was great so there were no issues with standing water, even considering heavy rains recently. This is a well designed course that forces you to play specific shots or face a stiff penalty. The beautiful backdrop of the Monterey bay helps ease the pain. Minus one star for the “friendliness” of the pro shop and lack of beverage cart.
The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
Played On 03/10/2017Fun Course
This course is very challenging with its narrow, tree-lined fairways, slippery greens and elevation changes. $60 is about the most I'm willing to spend on a round of golf so the promotional rate of $59 was perfect. Play was slower than average, probably due to the difficulty of the course (just shy of 5hrs with no stop at the turn). I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next promo rate!

I booked on GN for $35 including a cart. I went out right on time but ran into a group that was slower than the rest of the field. finished in 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Greens were in good shape, tee boxes were ok. A couple of the tees were put in places that didn't make sense for the pin placement, but I'm always into a challenge.
Just watch out for the mess the geese make on 16 and 17!
San Juan Oaks Golf Club

Staff was great, course was in good shape, and the price was reasonable. Don't go in the rough or you'll never find your ball. Only issue my group had was the guys in front of us that took FOREVER and were dressed like they just got out of the gym. We never saw a Marshall to have them speed up play.
I would definitely recommend this course to friends. I assume that I just got unlucky being behind the group we followed.
Monterey Pines Golf Club
Played On 9/24/2012Best value in town
This is a great beginner course because it's short, inexpensive, pretty flat, and doesn't have a lot of rough. There is quite a bit of O.B., though. Make sure to step off your shot if you hear a plane landing or taking off. They fly directly over the course depending on the direction of the wind. The only real negative about the Pines is that too many people that play there don't find it necessary to rake the traps or fix their ball marks on the greens.
West at Rancho Canada Golf Club
Played On 8/20/2012Fun course with great layout utilizing the Carmel River
This is one of my favorite places to play twilight golf. The multiple tee shots/approach shots over the Carmel River make it challenging and fun. Beware in the fall because the leaves dropping can make it hard to find your ball, even in the fairway.
