Tower Ridge Country Club
Played On 8/14/2013Difficult course in poor condition
We had played this course early in the season and I wanted to return because it is an interesting and challenging layout. Unfortunately, the fairways had been pretty much decimated with bug damage and the tees were only so-so. The greens, however, were in pretty good shape. It has a 129 slope from the whites and it plays long even though it is a par 70. The rough was penalizing and the greens have a lot of break. The former name of the course was "Cliffside" and thus many of the holes have vast elevation changes. Not a course for high handicappers. A good challenge if you think your game is up to snuff.
Green at Tunxis Country Club
Played On 8/1/2013Nice suburban course with 45 holes. Decent condition, moderate difficulty.
The 45 holes is nice because there was a tournament of 144 people on one of the 18's but we went right out on the other 18 (the green course) and played without delay. The greens were large and moderately undulated. The fairways were OK but there were quite a few bad spots, probably bug damage. The par threes were challenging. The course is flat and easilly walked. Some sand and water but not too difficult. Overall an enjoyable experience.
Shaker Hills Country Club
Played On 7/11/2013Almost "majestic" in design and setting.
This is a well maintained course with many beautiful holes. It is tree-lined but not overly tight. There is no development along any of the holes....very natural! Many elevation changes that add some complexity to club selection. It was only moderately difficult from the white tees. If you hit it straight and have a decent short game you will really enjoy the course.
Sandhill Crane Golf Club - Championship Golf Course
Played On 2/15/2013Unfriendly "locals only" municiple course
The course was just "OK". It had a lot of water, it was flat and somewhat conjested. The greens were more brown than green. They made a big deal about their "no cooler" policy even though all we had was a couple of waters in a mini pouch.
Avalon Golf Club
Played On 10/16/2012Nice course, challenging greens
My wife and I stayed in Cape May and played Avalon on a good deal through GolfNow. Hooked up with a couple of friendly guys who also booked through GolfNow. Course is flat with drivable fairways and not a lot of trouble. Good advantage on longer holes for women and seniors. Being at sea level and with ocean breezes it can play longer than it seems. Greens were large and very undulating making for a number of three putts for me and, I wager, others, depending on pin placement. Some water and bunkers but not problematic for low or mid handicaps. Not much development around course so that most holes seem serene and natural. Overall a very good golf experience on a course that seems easy but the score on the card says it's moderately difficult.
