Don't take the first tee time if you want to warm up, or have pins on the greens

Hadn't played this course in over 20 years - used to play it a lot as a kid when I lived in Oceanside. Owners have done a nice job revitalizing the greens - they are in much better shape than I remember. Fairways are still spotty, and a lot of the "rough" is actually bare dirt. Price is right.

Still several blind shots and some strange routing that is hard to follow. Course is also popular with disc golfers, so if you get behind a large group of them it could be a slow round. Fortunately we were first off just ahead of a group of 8 disc golfers so it wasn't an issue and we got done in just over 3 hours.

Speaking of first off though - we had a 7:00 tee time but the driving range and the pro shop don't open until 7:00! That doesn't make much sense - you'd think they would open at least 30 minutes before the first tee time. Also we were through hole #3 before someone bothered to put out the pins. That was a source of both amusement and annoyance. #3 especially is a huge double-green. Tough to hit your approach shot when you don't know where the hole is.

Response from on 10/06/2017:
Hello, Matt. Thank you for the kind words about the work that has gone into the course and the quality of the Greens. We intend to keep improving with more projects planned throughout next year. Disc golfers are treated like other golfers with groups of 4 and are expected to show golf etiquette with the pace of play. We are happy to Marshall any slow play. We will work to communicate the feedback to our team for future improvements. Our shop opens at 6.30 AM but that morning our opener was sick. We apologize for the inconvenience. Flags are one of the first chores to be done and were another result of our team working down a man that morning. We will communicate your disappointment to the team so they know how their absence affects our golfers. We hope you come again once our greens are healed. Thanks for playing Goat Hill Park.

Stunning

Really great layout in the middle of nowhere. The course conditions here are fantastic, pace of play was great, and there are lots of interesting and challenging holes. Would like to come back and play it again when there aren't 30+ mph winds like there were on the day we played which made it a slog, but my group loved the layout and conditions so much that this was a minor annoyance.

Need more golf boards - they only have 2. Also service in the restaurant could improve, as it was quite slow. All in all though, this is worth the drive to Borrego.

Not worth the money

For a $200 resort course, this was a major disappointment. No driving range, just hitting bays into a net off worn down mats. Course is in terrible shape - ground under repair everywhere. Pace of play is abysmal - and we played on a Thursday. Holes are not particularly memorable and only 1 is on the ocean.

Clubhouse is nice, the snack bar has good food, and the golf boards are fun. But for the price we paid, there are far far better tracks out there.

Nice holes, terrible layout

I play this course 4-5 times a year only because I am a Carlsbad resident and get the resident discount. Even then at $80 on the weekend it seems high - I would never pay the rack rate. My visiting buddy had to pay $99 with the senior discount. Yikes!

Course has some very nicely designed holes, but the layout leaves a lot to be desired. For example, they clearly crammed #8 and #9 into a space that is really only big enough for 1 hole. #8 is a fun little par 4, but #9 is a joke - a par 3 so short that you have to tee off with a sand wedge from the back tees. After finishing #11 you have to drive about 10 minutes to get to the tee box at #12, including the entire length of the hole backwards. Not sure what the designer was thinking on that one, but there had to be a way to avoid doing that.

Pace of play is a big problem on this course - I don't think I've ever finished a round in under 4:30 and I've routinely played much more crowded tracks like Encinitas Ranch under 4 hours. They really need to do something about that. It always stacks up on #4 and then is slow for the rest of the round.

Constant use of mats on the range is disappointing. Grass tees should be open on weekends, especially for the fees they are charging.

Conditions are usually pretty good and the clubhouse facilities are excellent.

UPDATE - Issue resolved

Joe the director of golf was very responsive to my complaint about the cancellation fee and refunded my money. Good, pleasant guy and very customer service oriented. As such, I am changing my review of this course and will definitely come back. Unfortunately GolfAdvisor doesn't seem to have a way to edit my previous review.

Just be aware that they do have a 72-hour cancellation fee of $45 per golfer. :-)

Beware of ridiculous cancellation fees

I've been on many golf trips to the Palm Desert area and have played both courses at the Indian Wells Resort several times. On Thursday January 7th there wasn't much play due to very heavy rains the day before and chilly temperatures. My buddy and I paid the exorbitant $180 greens fee each and teed off on the Player's course around 9:40am (an hour ahead of our scheduled tee time due to the wide open tee sheet) and finished at about 1:15pm. We then decided to do the $49 replay on the Celebrity course and were able to get that 18 holes in before dark. Because we did this replay, we decided to cancel our Saturday January 9th tee time on the Celebrity course as we had just played it and wanted to try another course instead. I knew about their 72-hour cancellation policy, but when I called to cancel and explained that we had already played the Celebrity and asked them to waive the cancellation fee, they gave no indication that this would be a problem.

Well, I got home a couple of days later and discovered that they charged us a $90 cancellation fee! This is after we paid $360 plus $98 total on Thursday to play both courses. Unbelievable and unreasonable!

We played Silver Rock on Saturday which is a better course for less money. You just lost 2 customers forever, Indian Wells Golf Resort. Hope you enjoy that $90 cancellation fee because you are never getting another dime from us to play your overpriced tracks. Disappointing.

Look for better deals than what we paid

We paid $74 per person through Golf Now on a Sunday, even though hardly anyone was out and they had just punched the fairway rough, meaning there were mud plugs everywhere. Course is challenging and demands a good tee ball. It is probably in better shape in later June and through the summer, but of course that is when it will be really hot in Fallbrook. Some greens were slow and bumpy, others were speedy making for some annoying inconsistency. Don't walk this course - there are some pretty long cart rides between some holes. Pace of play is good. Nice driving range and good on-tap beer selection at the 19th hole in the beautiful clubhouse. I'd play again in the $50-range but not for $74.
