About
My name's Clive Agran and, because I have arguably the loveliest shoulder turn this side of the Carpathians, I really should have won at least one major by now. Only a lack of distance, dismal short game, appalling putting and lack of ability stands in my way. With a handicap heading south faster than a flock of swallows on a cold autumn morning, perhaps I should give up golf and try bowls. But, having spent my life in a ceaseless quest for the ultimate swing thought, I'm not about to quit now.

Penha Longa Resort - Atlantic Course
Played On 06/29/2015Pretty Course with Several Outstainding Holes
Penha Longa is a top-notch resort that has something of the feel of an English country estate, only warmer. The course is a cracker. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, it makes great use of the considerable height it enjoys with some impressively elevated tees, sweeping fairways and splendid views. Olive, cork and eucalyptus trees help provide definition and water plays its part in creating a rich and lovely landscape. About 7000 yards off the tips, it has hosted the Portuguese Open and rightfully deserves its high ranking among the very best courses on the continent.
Holtye Golf Club
Played On 09/11/2013Great Value
Holtye is a pretty, nine-hole course that you underestimate at your peril. With trees lining the fairways, patches of heather lying in wait, a smattering of bunkers and unusual ditch-like features created long ago when trees were hauled out of the forest to build ships, there are plenty of problems to challenge players on this appealing heathland course.
Slightly disconcerting, the opening hole runs alongside a public road but only a prodigious hook off the first tee could threaten the traffic. Thereafter you disappear into the woods and the rest of the round is comparatively quiet.
The author A. A. Milne, famous for his Winnie-the-Pooh stories, was a frequent visitor with his son Christopher (Christopher Robin). And there’s a rumour that Sir Winston Churchill played here. Whether the former Prime Minister did in fact tee it up is open to doubt but what is certain is the club was founded in 1893.
Fast draining, well maintained and with plenty of elevation, Holtye offers what might well be the best golfing bargain in the whole of Sussex. After midday on weekdays, the green fee for nine holes is an extremely reasonable £10 ($15), while 18 holes (there are slightly different tees on the back nine) is a barely believable £14 ($21).
