The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes
Played On 09/25/2019Greens...
The last couple of outings at the Lakes have left us wondering what's going on with the greens. Reading some of the last few reviews it appears we were playing another course or there is a second set of greens we weren't aware of. The greens we played were in very rough shape and akin to trying to putt on a hardwood floor that was more brown than green. Realizing that we are moving to another season but do not recall the greens in this rough a shape this time of the year..
The course has come a long way in the last couple of years so let's hope the excellent progress continues as this is a nice course.
The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes
Played On 02/08/2019Very wet and very muddy...lift, clean and place!
Have been playing this course for over six years and have never seen winter golf so wet and muddy at this venue. Including the par 3's half the course was cart path only.
We have played this course a number of times in the past several months and it has been the same every time, wet and muddy. We have opted for lift, clean and place from the get-go, and so should you if you're playing here and it is still partial cart path only. And, even if it isn't, the fairways are more mud than grass.
At this rate I don't see this venue drying out before August...something isn't right here.
Needs work...
Given a lot of money and a lot of time, this could be a really nice golf property.
Granted the weather conditions we played in were not that good but the course, in particular the fairways, were just one step ahead of nothing more than mud. The traps, well, not that you should be in a trap, were not groomed.
One can only guess that the "Pin Placement Clown" chose the pin placements. Apparently they're saving 90% of the space on the greens for some reason.
Best part of the day, watching and listening to F18A fighter planes doing touch and go landings on the nearby airport.
Island West Golf Club
Played On 10/27/2018Not bad, not bad at all...
In the nearly two years since I last played this course I have heard nothing but severely negative comments regarding the condition...in particular the condition of the greens.
We were surprised and somewhat impressed at the overall condition of the entire course and in particular the greens. The last time we played here there was more green "paint" on the greens than grass.
The course has come back a great deal. This is a nice piece of golf real estate and it is on its way back but still has some distance to go.
I'll conclude but saying "it's worth a try."

Played On 09/01/2018Getting better...
Have played this course for five years and conditions have improved markedly over that span of time. There was a time when, at best, this course was a wasteland.
The greens are in very good shape (new holes need to be cut more frequently), the fairways, and rough are were in very good shape as well. Overall course maintenance has steadily improved and appears that it will continue to improve.
The new clubhouse has finally opened after too many years of looking at the artist conception and the notation "coming soon." And, finally, you actually start play at the first hole!
A nice piece of golf real estate, decent pricing, good staff, well worth a try if you've never played here.

Played On 08/29/2018Sad...
Sad, is the only word I can think of to describe what is a very nice piece of golf real estate that has been virtually laid to waste by mismanagement.
The new magagement seems sure that they can put the course back in shape by next spring...that may be somewhat optimistic to say the least...I wish them well.
Time, and some real money, could make this a great course. The course has real potential but in its current state, well, play it, but don't be too critical. Keep in mind that the current state is not the fault of the new management.

Played On 05/02/2018Greens?
Have played this course many times but this last time the course was in the worst condition that we've ever seen. The greens, if you can call them greens, have some very severe problems. Not sure if a fungus or simply lack of proper maintenance but they were simply terrible.
Not sure if some of the other reviewers played the same course that we did as their reviews seem to be more optimistic fantasy than the reality of what we played on. Would suggest simply calling the putt in if it's within a club length. Putts simply hopped, skipped and jumped to the cup or vicinity of the cup.
If you've played Island West in the past several years, well, the greens here are headed in that same direction.
Simply put, the course, as it is today, is not worth the time or the money.
Oh, time to re-sod the tee boxes or issue hammers to pound your tees in with.
Southbridge Golf Club
Played On 04/25/2018Needs a lot of money...
Have played this course a number of times but it has been over a year since last outing. If anything the course is in worse shape than our last outing and it was pretty bad then.
Golf carts are in rough shape...parking brakes did not work on either cart in our four ball. Cart paths, simply put, are dangerous. Many tee boxes are actually “domed.” Pin placements must have been done by the “Pin Placement Clown.”
This could be a really good course but needs a lot of money and a lot of time. In the four years that we have played this course we have seen no indication of either. We won’t be back. Unfortunate conditions for what could be a very nice piece of golf real estate.
Island West Golf Club
Played On 03/07/2017Needs A Lot Of Work!
What could be a nice course needs a lot of work in all areas. Allowing for the time of year, the greens were in terrible shape, the fairways not much better, and the tee boxes were simply put, more dirt than grass but did see several traps that actually had sand in them. Based on the shape the course is in now one has to doubt that it will get much better in the spring or later.
Eagle's Pointe Golf Club
Played On 01/06/2017Needs work and a lot of money
Fairways consisted of more mud than grass...the bunkers can best be described as hard gravel...tee boxes were a mess...best lies were in the rough...the greens were running fast and true, the highlight of the round. This could be a great course with work and a lot of money.
Nice Course
I've played Crosswinds a number of times and it is a nice course but it needs a few things corrected.
The bunkers either had water in them, were so hard as to not be playable or simply hadn't been groomed in along time.
The greens were fair, speed good. Pin placement must have been done by a someone who has never played recreational golf as they were literally all set up for the last day of the PGA Championship. This has literally been the case all of the times I've played here...must be saving the middle of the greens for something big.
And, it wouldn't hurt to cut new cups, no matter where you put them, more than perhaps once a week.
Still, all-in-all, a good value.

Read some of the previous reviews recently submitted and we must have played a different course. This course could be excellent but requires money and time. Some of the greens were in pretty rough shape and the traps were more on the order of gravel rather than sand...not that you should be in a trap to begin with. It is unfortunate to see a great layout not in the shape that it could and should be in.
Dolphin Head Golf Course
Played On 04/19/2016Work and Money
Now that the course is open to the public and being run by the Brown group it is a wait and see if the course conditions improve. The greens need work, the fairways need work. The staff were only interested in taking your money. Nice course but needs taking care of. Too many great courses in the greater Hilton Head area to play...wouldn't worry about playing or not playing this one.
Nice layout, poor condition...
Dirt cart paths...greens in terrible condition...gas carts.
Eagle's Pointe Golf Club
Played On 06/03/2014Plyaed the front nine twice...
First the staff seemed like they were doing us a favor by taking our money at the front desk. Then the starter was more concerned with going home then answering a few questions. The greens had pins in areas where the greens were in need of a rest and not a days worth of traffic. After finishing our front nine we found the 10th to have a foursome on the green, a foursome in the fairway and two foursomes waiting to tee off. We played the front nine again...no one in front of us and no one behind us. Nice course in need of some management.
Eagle's Pointe Golf Club
Played On 06/16/2013Great course...
A great course and a great value for the money. I found only one odd thing...the sand traps...not that you should, or I should have been in one, or more...but the sand, or lack of sand, was very odd. There seemed to be a half inch of fine sand on top of some very hard packed sand. Odd. Aside from the sand I wouldn't mind playing this course on a regular basis.
Willow Creek Golf Course
Played On 05/14/2013Great course...great value
The course is in excellent condition. The greens were quick but not too fast and were in excellent condition. The staff was great...I came in as a single and was matched up with another single and we were on our way well ahead of our scheduled tee times. I've played a number of courses in the area and Willow Creek is near the top of the list for conditioning and value.
The Preserve at Verdae
Played On 04/24/2013Requires time and money...
This is a great course but it requires a large amount of money and time to bring it to its full potential and I don't see signs of either taking place now or in the near future. I have the feeling that the ownership has neither the inclination to spend the time to bring this course up to speed and from all appearances won't be spending the money either. Too bad as this course really has potential. I know it's early in the season but way too much needs to be done.
