Powerscourt Golf Club - West Course

I had never played at Powerscourt before so I wasn't sure which course to play so I consulted Mr Kevin Markham. Well his book "Hooked" anyway. The west it was. Even though I had pre booked the west the dutiful lady in the pro shop said I could play either course & informed me that the west course was a little soft underfoot tha the east. Despite this I stuck to Mr Markham's word & headed for the first tee on the west. The 1st sets the tone for the day. Not too difficult off the tee but lengthy enough with a wonderfully shaped green. The 4th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th are the stand out holes and the rest have plenty of elevation change & clever bunkering to keep you on your toes. I really liked the 15th with the tall pines shaping the hole up to the highest point of the course then free wheeling from there all the way back to the clubhouse. The course condition was superb considering the amount of rainfall lately. Definitely a playable venue all year round. You will 3 putt here but it doesn't seem to hurt the same at Powerscourt. The stunning scenery must softeen the blow.

The lady in the Pro shop was rather dry and disconcerting but don't let that deter you from getting to know this Eddie Hackett layout. This course can be difficult at first but play it at least three times before passing judgement. Clubbing the doglegs is the main challenge and the first tee shot sets the tone. There is a good variety of holes. Some tight drives, some open. My favourite part was booming drives over the many crests & braes to watch my ball sweep against the backdrop of the Mourne mountains. The greens are fair and we'll maintained, stay below the hole on 15. The stroke index one 14th is as tough an approach shot as your likely to face. The narrow passage to the green can only be accessed by a well placed, and borderline hooked tee shot. Pity about the man made duck pond which spoils an otherwise good hole. A lay up may be a wise decision or you can skim the water like I unintentionally did. The best shot on the course is the approach to the seventh. It makes up for the indecisiveness you encounter on the tee box. I will definitely be back to Kilkeel, I prefer to Warrenpoint, sshhhh.

Good parkland course. Some challenging doglegs that the bigger hitters can take on. Good greens. Zoe in the pro shop was very welcoming and polite. Good value for money.
