Lovely par 3. 18 handicap but it was into the wind and sloped towards the water. Photo submitted by joeimp on 08/12/2019

Royal Golf Club - The Montgomerie Course
Played On 08/19/2020Golf in the kingdom
I brought my clubs with me while on deployment to Bahrain. There is one course in the country. Well, two, but the other is a sand course. RGC is a Troon facility. It's in pretty good shape for August, considering the climate here. Some lost grass but it'll come back in the fall. The design offers a challenge but not overly so. I really liked the greens, there are lots of undulations and they are paspalum. Really grips the ball for slow rolls, so you have to crush it. Alright I don't want to hear it, just because a green is "fast" doesn't mean it's good. On these greens you have to read the breaks and putt harder than normal, and it really challenges you.
Only complaint was the gear. My buddy had to get clubs, they are free but they were junk. I would expect at least a name brand at a top notch facility like this. Also the carts are thrashed. But, overall it was a great experience and I will definitely play again before I leave. And every time I'm in the kingdom.
Newport National Golf Club - Orchard Course
Played On 08/09/2019Need to step up their game.
This course was as picturesque as any I've ever played. It was a challenge and made me think hard about my shots and club selection. The course set up was really nice and there was even a square cut green. However, I have some gripes.
1. Divot bottles on cart were empty.
2. Porta-shi**ers.
3. Cart girl would not take my card because "it's a hassle".
4. No water on the course.
Sorry, but for $125 ($150 in the morning) this stuff is unacceptable. Yes, my bad for not bringing cash. But I have never had the bev card not take my card and allow me to grab it from the bar when I finish. On top of that the bar and kitchen is nothing to write home about. Step up your game, Troon.
Meadow Brook Golf Club
Played On 08/03/2019I'm here for work and a local recommended Meadow Brook. I tried it once and came back the next week. The first time I carried and the second I rode. It is a beautiful piece of property that winds through the woods of South County and there are a few water hazards that come into play. It is privately owned and well kept, but it could use an architect. I say this because some of the tees are in weird positions, and the tips are a 7,500 yard course. This is way too long for a course like this. But, it was a really fun course to play and I will return next time I'm out here.
Connecticut National Golf Club
Played On 07/13/20192nd time here...always a blast.
The first time I played here it was in April when it was still cool out. Yesterday it was hot and humid, but it did not affect my round. The layout of this course is phenomenal. Every hole is picturesque, and the greens really make you think about every approach shot and putt. Love playing this course every time I'm in the area.
Indian Canyons Golf Resort - South Course
Played On 04/20/2019Second time here, always a challenge.
This course is so much fun. For starters the wind was blowing 30+ mph when I left the house this morning, but it was dead calm once I got to the course. It is a resort course but not a pushover for sure. There were several approach shots that I missed by just a few feet, and a flop shot was required to get over the dips and swales into a tough pin placement. It seemed like every hole took a different approach and I really had to think about my club selection all day. The turf is in excellent shape and the bunkers were nice and fluffy.
This is my second time here and I plan to come back for sure.
Robson Ranch Golf Club
Played On 03/20/2019Really nice desert golf course
This was a fun round. Course conditions were outstanding. The layout is both picturesque and challenging, and they had some really tough pin placements that made me think twice about my approach shots. Definitely did not expect that much of a challenge from a course in a seniors community but it was there for sure. The ball rolled a mile too. Casa Grande has an underdeveloped golf scene, and there are cheaper courses. But this place is the best value.
Francisco Grande Resort & Golf Club
Played On 03/19/2019Just OK
I expected more out of a resort course. Layout was OK, there were some interesting holes. I got away with a lot of bad shots, because there are acres of rough. Staff was really good. The bar is great and there is a lot of history documented in the photos on the walls.
Francisco Grande Resort & Golf Club
Played On 03/19/2019just OK
Very forgiving, lots of rough and little OB areas. I got away with a lot of bad shots. Course is in decent shape. Some interesting holes but layout is nothing to write home about. I was expecting more from a resort course. Overpriced for sure, this should be a ~$25 round but I played double that.
Mace Meadow Golf & Country Club
Played On 09/02/2018Improvements continue
This was my first time playing at Mace. All greens are new and the putting green is being renovated. Layout is a lot of fun, especially the back nine. There are elevation changes but no ridiculous hole locations like shots from elevated tee to elevated green. I say it's walkable but with some effort. I could see this place as a top notch mountain golf course and with some seed, sand, and fertilizer it could be in great shape. The OB areas are georgeous with pines and plenty of wetlands areas,. Hope to see a full maintenance staff to whip this place into top shape!
County Louth Golf Club
Played On 07/13/2018First crack at true links golf
During a couples trip to Ireland we played here. It was the only course we played on our trip. The course is beautiful, on the coast of the Irish Sea. We were one of only a few groups out there and it went quickly. If I ever make it back I would play here again.
Navy Marine Golf Course
Played On 07/13/2018great value
I always play here when I'm on the island. The layout is fun. The back nine has some really nice tee shots. The value is great especially if you're military.
Eagles Pride Golf Course - Blue/Green
Played On 07/13/2018What a gem!
Talk about bang for your buck. This course is scenic, provides challenging approach shots, and is a driver course for sure. I think I was able to use the driver on at least 13 holes.
Too bad I don't live locally - I think I could play this course regularly. I carried my bag and it was a nice walk with a bit of exertion.
Whispering Firs Golf Club
Played On 07/12/2018Keep it in the fairway!
Phew boy, I lost over a dozen balls here. Now I won't blame it on the course, I've always felt if you don't like the rough or OB, well, don't hit it there. So not the course's fault. In fact a regular told me it used to be easier until the tree huggers got a hold of the place and made 'em quit mowing the rough. Well in the words of White Goodman, "the hippies finally got something right!" Because the course is very scenic, and if I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely need to come back and redeem myself.
Chambers Bay
Played On 07/11/2018Plays as advertised
Well I had to check a major championship venue off my list, so on a recent trip to Seatac I played at Chambers. Indeed this is a true links course, except for perhaps the slope. It is built into an old quarry and there is quite a bit of elevation change, but still quite walkable. I carried my bag for the front and got a (free) walking cart for the back. Hospitality was great but the pace was extremely slow: my round took 5:30.
Loved the course setup. There are tee blocks but no markers, some tees are shared, and snacks/bar in a spot where you go by 3-4 times during the round.
As for the difficulty, well it wasn't set up like Sunday of the '15 open, but still demanding. Shot placement and club selection is critical. Not a flat spot on the property, so you better put that tee shot in the right spot or it'll take a 90 degree turn and run 30 yards down into a nasty and deep waste bunker. Greens are rocking and rolling, but actually not terribly fast. The slope from the whites is 121, believe it or not, but you wouldn't think it.
My takeaway: #16 is a short par four that I drove through the green. As you remember Branden Grace ended up by the train tracks here, so the logical conclusion is that I am a better golfer than Branden Grace :0
Aeropines Golf Club - Tomcat Course
Played On 06/19/2018Good practice course
Super easy layout, in fact I shot my career low. The course is pretty much thrashed. Many greens had large dirt patches. However, for an afternoon of just practicing your game on the cheap, it can't be beat. I will play again.
Virginia Beach National Golf Club
Played On 06/17/2018Awesome layout
I played this course twice in one week. The second time I showed up as a single on Sunday morning (Father's Day) and they worked me in. The layout here is awesome. There is a great variety here. Have to think about your tee shots, but still a few grip it and rip it holes. Greens are rocking and rolling. Super fun and challenging course without beating me up too bad. Plus, it's a First Tee facility so it's all for a good cause. If I was a local I would definitely buy a membership here.
The Pines at Elizabeth City

Played On 06/06/2018Monarch Bay Golf Club - Tony Lema Course
Played On 05/19/2018Bring your big boy pants to Monarch Bay
You'd better wear your big boy pants to play this place. And I do mean pants, because it was very windy. The course is located a club's throw away from the bay in San Leandro. It bills itself as a Scottish links style course and performs as advertised in both weather and layout. It was 58 degrees, cloudy, and a steady 12-15 mph breeze for my round that did not relent.
The architecture was what really impressed me. Every hole is a challenge. There are short par 4s, long par 4s, narrow and wide fairways with landing zones that make you think twice about just grabbing the driver. The bunkering is excellent both in placement and condition. One short par 4 on the back has 10 bunkers, and number 12 (I think) has a six-foot deep greenside bunker. There are dips and swales in the approaches and green surrounds. Greens are firm and while not overly fast provide a challenge to read.
Facilites were OK. The restaurant offers basic snacks and canned beers. The tap was down and there were no hot dogs.
This was the best golf value I've found in quite some time. I was not prepared for how much of a challenge this place would be and it gave me a beat down, and I left swearing I would be back to redeem myself.
