Poppy Hills Golf Course
Played On 10/24/2015A Punishing Beaut
I'm not a good golfer. I'm not a fair golfer. I'm a horrible golfer when it comes down to it. But still, I enjoyed Poppy Hills a great deal. It's a beautiful track in excellent shape. It is TOUGH, but honestly, I was not surprised. There's some considerable elevation changes, and I think that adds to the challenge and the fun. It's still a fair course - there's no real tricks here other than tight fairways, the elevation, and some doglegs. This is a place for the bucket list, and I'm glad I got to play it. NOTE: I did play during a NCGA tournament, so that backed us up a bit and greatly slowed play. I'm not sure how fast a round is during normal operation.
Pacific Grove Golf Links
Played On 10/23/2015Incredible Bargain; Amazing Views
We had a great time at PG. The course is in good shape, and the greens were terrific. During the course of play, we saw deer, an amazing "invasion" of Monarch butterflies, and of course, the stellar seaside views of the back nine. It's a shorter track, and very friendly to us less skilled golfers.
The value for the dollar is not to be believed. Remarkable.
Red Hawk Ridge
Played On 09/13/2014A Day Well Spent
We had a beautiful day to play, and the course shined. Good variety of challenges and our foursome of high handicappers never felt overwhelmed. The course was in great condition and the staff was friendly.
Lots of elevation changes and nice views of the mountains and of course, nearby Castle Rock.
The Ridge at Castle Pines North
Played On 09/12/2014A terrific, a fun course
Our foursome had a really great time here.
The course is in fantastic condition. We are a group of high handicappers, and found the course challenging without being punishing. There's some nice views of the mountains, and the back nine finished out with a few spectacular views and some unique challenges. There's not a lot of water in play, but significant sand of a few holes.
Some wildlife was seen including a Golden Eagle, and several other creatures.
The only down side was the weather, which was uncharacteristically cold and damp. The result was that damp conditions required us to keep the carts on the cart path which slowed the game.
All in all one of the most enjoyable rounds I've played in a while.
