Esplanade Golf & Country Club at Lakewood Ranch
Played On 07/06/2018Solid course
Slope from white tees is only 121. The fairways are generous for wayward shots. All of mine stayed in play. Greens are in good shape. Too bad they are aerifying them on July 9th from what I was told. There are challenges out there, but one should be able to play at or below handicap.
10 & 19 at University Park Country Club
Played On 05/31/2018One of the best in Sarasota area
Definitely one of the best courses in the greater Sarasota area. The price is right off season. During peak season it is overpriced so I do not play here. It is extremely well run including marshalls on course to keep things in order.
Lakewood National Golf Club - Commander Course
Played On 04/13/2018Good if you get it for less than $50
Good course overall. Tee boxes, fairways and greens are in excellent condition. Greens are tough and fast. Get ready for some 3 putts. Takes getting used to for most amateurs. First time you play you are likely to lose some strokes due to lack of layout knowledge.
Pace of play was far too slow. Took about 4:45. The course has no marshals on the course to speed up slow players. They need at least one marshal per 9 to ensure that the time to play does not exceed 4:20.
Unless you could care less about money, I would only recommend playing this course if you get a tee time for less than $50. Otherwise, I would not play here again.
Waterlefe Golf & River Club
Played On 03/30/2018Good not great
The course is in decent shape. The course design resulted in half a dozen "quirky" holes. If you can play it for less than $40, I'd recommend it.
The River Club
Played On 01/16/2018Mediocre at best
If you like dogleg par 5s, then play here. I am not a fan. Does not appear that they water the course much except for the greens. Would not play here again unless fees were about $20 including cart. A bit disorganized and quirky staff.
Summerfield Crossings Golf Club
Played On 01/09/2018Mediocre at best
First of all, walking is prohibited at all times unless you are a member! Not good for those of us seeking "a good walk spoiled," as John Feinstein titled his book.
Took 4 and a half hours to play. Had to wait multiple times throughout the round.
Course design is mediocre. Good shots are often penalized.
I do not plan to play this course again.
River Run Golf Links
Played On 12/19/2017Good value
River Run is worth playing for less than $25. The course is in decent shape. Unfortunately, the pace of play slows dramatically when the snowbirds are here; they are slow as molasses. So, instead of 3 and half hour rounds, be ready for 4 and a half to 5 hours; especially because they all seem to stop and eat between 9 and 10. There were THREE groups on #10 when I arrived from #9; WTF!! Greens were in good shape although # 2 seemed faster than the others.
Clearwater Country Club
Played On 01/27/20155 hour round!
Pathetic pace of play after a half hour delay due to poor scheduling by course. Course layout and conditions were OK in general. Would not recommend this course, however, due to the other issues.
Wentworth Golf Club
Played On 01/11/2015Would not play here again
One of the most poorly designed courses that I have ever played. Pace of play was also extremely slow. Whoever thought to describe the back nine as "links style" clearly has never stepped foot in Scotland or Ireland. Sorry, there are many other course to play. Don't waste your time or money at Wentworth. This is my first negative review ever.
Stonebridge Golf Club of New Orleans - Championship Course
Played On 09/23/2014Greens inconsistent
Greens on front nine were OK; back nine horrible. It also seemed that watering was inconsistent causing some shots to plug while others ran out.
IMG Academy Golf Club
Played On 09/14/2014Aerated greens not disclosed
Upon arrival to the first green, we were surprised to see pretty fresh plugs and lots of sand. There was no disclosure on GolfNow that the greens had been aerated. I inquired after finishing my round and was told that the greens had been aerated only two weeks earlier but that it is the course's practice to remove the aeration symbol/warning after ONLY ONE WEEK! Needless to say, I was stunned by that response. The greens were in horrible shape which negatively affected our experience and overall opinion of the course.
Lake Chabot Golf Course - The 18 Hole Course
Played On 05/29/2014Chabot not bad for a local track
Nothing fancy here. Lots of quirky holes especially 15 and 16. Speed of greens can be inconsistent, and they require local knowledge to know the lines. They should trim the tree on the right side of #12.
Waterlefe Golf & River Club
Played On 05/25/2014Nice course
Front nine played slower than preferred because we were behind a group of ten from the Midwest. They let us play through on the the back nine, so that sped our pace of play. The Marshall(s) should try to do more to speed up groups that are lagging behind. The course was in good shape. The greens were quick but true. Will play here again.
Eagle Vines Golf Club
Played On 9/01/2013Like the course except for the greens
For a course of this quality, the greens are the biggest disappointment. It's tough to get a true roll on any green, and the speed from green to green is inconsistent.
