Poplar Forest Golf Course
Played On 07/18/2014Not bad. Not great, but not bad.
There's a huge practice range, but it gets a lot of traffic and they don't move the ropes nearly often enough so you are almost always hitting off dirt or small tufts of grass. Nice, big practice bunker, but the sand in there is more like clay and it is both nearly impossible to practice from and feels completely different to the better bunkers on the course. Prices are good, and this year the course has been in much better condition. Course gets a ton of play, so expect to be constantly stuck behind older foursomes, but if you can play there during the off season or twilight hours, the experience will be much improved. Holes are pretty straight forward and not very difficult, but the course has a tendency to be much windier than surrounding areas. If I can give you one top, don't try to cut the corner on 5. A layup in the middle of the fairway still only leaves 90-130 yards, and takes all the trouble out of play.
Ivy Hill Golf Club
Played On 07/10/2014Great course, great staff
Ivy hill is the one course in the area I don't mind driving half an hour to get there. Course is always in great condition. Holes have a lot of character and provide unique challenges. Both nines are challenging but play completely differently. Back tees are as long as most championship courses around here. Staff is very friendly, and head pro Eddie is a wizard with lessons. Practice facility is nice, but i wish there were a few more targets to aim at on the range. Expect slower, but well maintained greens. Kind of pricey compared to other courses around here, but it's a price I don't mind paying every now and then to treat myself.
Colonial Hills Golf Club
Played On 07/02/2014Worst course in the Lynchburg Area
Irons only driving range with no grass and ancient, moldy mats.
Almost no grass in the fairways
Staff is cold to non members
Cart paths are so bad that they Are actually dangerous. Steep hills, potholes, and rickety bridges patched with plywood.
Loud, probably drunk golfers almost every time I have been there.
