Cobblestone Golf, IN

We played Cobblestone today under beautiful 75 degree weather. The course is in very good shape, but for the bunkers, which are in need of fresh sand as they are hard-pan throughout.

It’s a popular course for the area, and at $50, it was filled with mostly foursomes. Our 2some was slotted in, even though we arrived 30 minutes after our tee time. The clubhouse is very friendly.

The course plays hard, even while the fairways are generous and wide. It’s a good “second shot” course, and oftentimes tricky. The fairways ungulate, but without much elevation. We played with a steady breeze, and parts of the course are certainly exposed to the vagaries of the wind.

The greens were large, in good shape, somewhat contoured, and held well... they were firm to putt.

We play a strict game, and we were truly perplexed, and somewhat annoyed, by the lack of markings around the course. Some of the “natural land” is marked in (almost hidden) red stakes.... while others are not marked at all!

It’s difficult to determine what’s a lateral hazard versus a lost ball without the markings to govern play.

There are no local rules on the card.

Is it enjoyable? Absolutely.

Is it memorable? Probably not.

Wide fairways

We played this course as our second 18 after a round at purgatory in Noblesville. The routing is extremely interesting, as it meanders through a very nice and upscale housing addition. No two holes went in the same direction. We had a 4pm tee time, and aside from an outing that was finishing up, we were the only group on the course. This course is a bombers delight, with very wide fairways... there were some forced carries greenside, as a few of the holes were protected by front bunkers. The greens rolled true and with some speed. It’s a fun little track, and extremely playable. It’s a relatively easy course with plenty of room. Course conditions were good. At $36 for 18 on a Saturday, this course was a tremendous value! Clubhouse was a bit lacking, but we had tasty brats before the round.

Interesting course could be great

We drove a couple hours away to make purgatory the first of two courses for the day. The grounds and clubhouse are very nice, and the staff greeting us with carts in the parking lot was a nice touch. The breakfast burritos were fantastic! They had a starter, and the course was busy, but not packed at 10am on a beautiful Saturday morning. Pace of play throughout the day was not an issue.

The course itself was in good, but not great shape. We were somewhat perplexed at some standing water around some tee boxes, while others were bone dry since it hadn’t rained in a good week at least. We thought they might have some drainage issues or busted sprinklers. We still can’t figure out what was going on there.

The greens were not rolled and were not fast. Somewhat disappointing.

The routing is nice, and very beautiful with the fescue. The course is obviously famous for the bunkers, and they were in fine shape.

It’s a very playable tract, surprisingly so. Fairways are huge. Very bad shots face very penal results, but all in all, the course was fair.

We had some confusion on the front side, as the white tees were sometimes playing much shorter than advertised. The tees all played the listed distance on the back nine.

This could be an amazing golf course, but some things should be improved. It’s somewhat pricey, but the carts were very dirty and not regularly hosed down.

I think the course relies on “tourist golfers” like ourselves, and may not have a dedicated clientele who would perhaps expect more on a day to day basis. It was a gimmicky appeal, with various tees and sand... and, of course, the 7900 yards that no one would ever play.

It was a fun day on the links.

Speed up the greens. Clean up the details, and this could be an amazing venue.

Thank you for the review, we appreciate your feedback. Glad you enjoyed the course. We have been experiencing some irrigation issues where heads are not turning off at the scheduled time. We believe we have this solved now, sorry you experienced the wet tee boxes.

Langford design

Nice course designed by William Langford. Good layout. Nice green complexes with undulations. The course was in decent shape, and had a good amount of traffic on a sunny 90 degree day but pace of play was reasonable. It’s a solid course, pretty fun... but it didn’t blow us away. It has a very pleasant little restaurant/bar with a nice balcony overlooking the 18 green. Very friendly staff. Good food.

Beautiful and challenging

This course was in very nice shape. It is absolutely breathtaking. We played 18 at twilight and had a bit of slow play on the front, but practically had the entire back to ourselves. The greens were incredibly fast on a sunny 90 degree day. They were perhaps the fastest greens I’ve ever played. It was essential to stay below the hole, and every putt demanded attention. Lots of nice elevation changes. It’s a hidden gem. I would definitely recommend this course.
