Dogwood Trail at Hampshire Country Club
Played On 09/20/2020Please...PLEASE...cut the fairways
I come back to visit family each year and usually play the Classic (original) course. But the Classic was closed for aeration so I played the Dogwood. Just like the Classic (which has a far better design, in my opinion), the greens were in fine shape but the fairways were cut to rough height. For some reason every time I play this facility - it doesn't matter the day - they simply do not cut the fairways and they are very shaggy. Note to course managers - CUT THE FAIRWAYS!
Island West Golf Club
Played On 09/01/2018I played on September 1, the same day as Robert, the other reviewer, did. I make it a point have ACCURATE reviews. Reviews like his make me mad as his was totally inaccurate, saying the greens were "poor at best" and the whole course is "run down." Not only were the greens not "poor at best," they were in decent-to-good shape. There were patches of crabgrass occasionally, but 99% of the greens, except for one or two, were nothing but grass. They rolled very well. The rest of the course's condition was pretty good, too. It's not Augusta National, and there are times the greens are not good, but this wasn't one of them. If you play this September and probably in October, ypu'll most likely be okay with the conditions. And no, I do not work for Brown Golf or even know anyone who does.
Blueberry Plantation Country Club
Played On 07/19/2018Great Conditions
I was relatively close to the area and I decided to try this course out based on the positive reviews of the conditions. The reviews were accurate, and I was especially pleased with the high quality of the greens. The whole course had country club-like conditioning. The layout itself has some good holes interspersed with some bland holes, but none of them qualify as being goofy. A nice find in a small south Georgia town.
Folkston Golf Club
Played On 01/25/2018Good Course for a Small Town
This course is in surprisingly good condition, given that it's in a small Georgia town and it doesn't cost much to play. The front nine greens were only okay - they didn't look all that great but putted better than they looked. The back nine greens had good grass on them and putted very well at a good speed. The fairways have decent grass on them and the bunkers are well maintained. It's a fairly wide open and easy course, so it won't beat you up, but a few of the holes are surprisingly challenging. Overall a decent place to play, but it's not in the category of a higher priced course.
Applewood Golf Course
Played On 11/02/2017Unexpected treat
This is a course in somewhat of the middle of nowhere, but close enough to Augusta and Waynesboro. The course was in very good condition. The greens are going into hibernation for the winter but they still putted well and mostly true. They probably need to roll the greens to smooth them out some, but that's a nitpick. For the most part they were good. Quite firm, but they would accept a well-struck approach and a pitch or chip hit with spin. If you can't do that, expect the ball to bounce and roll out. The fairways were excellent and the bunkers were well maintained.
Forest Hills Golf Club
Played On 10/18/2016Mixed Bag
I looked forward to playing this course as it's a Donald Ross and has a lot of history. The course was in good shape, including the greens, so no complaints there. The course had everything I thought I liked in a course - rolling hills, lots of trees, well maintained. However, for me personally, something was missing. The design was simply uninspiring, surprising for a Ross design., and rather one-dimensional in its monotony, especially for approach shots. At some courses, you can't wait to get to the next hole. Here, I couldn't wait for the round to finish. Nevertheless, I will recommend the course because of the condition, well, it is a Ross after all.
Little Ocmulgee At Wallace Adams Course
Played On 05/24/2016Good conditions but slow greens
Most other reviewers really enjoy this course, and I have to agree with them. It's definitely a hidden gem, not too tough, but enough challenge to keep you interested. When I played here last year, the course was in fantastic shape. This year, not as good but still okay. The driving range was unmowed and beat up, and the fairways were spotting in some areas. The grass on the greens is very healthy and plush, but only Stimpmetered at a 6 (I carry one in my bag). Last year they were a 9, so for some reason they slowed they way down, to the point that putting was very frustrating. Still, a worthwhile course to visit...note to greens staff: Mow the greens, fairways, and driving range!
Club Med Sandpiper Bay
Played On 08/04/2015Barely Okay
It's interesting to read the previous reviews, where some say the conditions were good and others say terrible. I guess everyone has different standards. The fact is that half the greens are marginally okay and the other half marginally not. They Stimp at about a 6 1/2 (I carry one in my bag) and they don't roll all that true at times. The grass on the greens is okay, not terrible, but not great. When it rains, this course retains water. As this course is part of Club Med, you have a bunch of people who really don't know how to run a course. A few years ago, for some unknown reason, they converted the par-5 1st hole into a par-4 where, if you play the back tees, you have to hit over the new practice putting green. The former par-4 10th is now a par-3. They turned two good holes into two awkward holes. The design of the course is good; now they just need someone competent to manage it and put some money into it.
Penny Branch Club
Played On 11/05/2014Unexpected quality in the middle of nowhere
I have played this course probably 25 times or so the past 10 years, and the day I played it, it was in fantastic condition, as usual. I called to see if the greens had been overseeded and was told yes, but they were still good. They were right. How they can maintain this course on the low green fees they charge (I paid $18 to walk on a Wednesday) is beyond me....and the range balls are good, too. The only negative is that a few of the holes are bland, but thre are no tricked-up ones. This also may be the quietest course in the country.
Thank you Mark for the course feedback and four star review from your recent visit at Applewood. We hope to see you again soon this season!
