Cobb's Creek Golf Club - Olde Course
Played On 10/20/2020Last Chance to play till 2023
If you are a lover of golf architecture, golf history, and walking golf this is a good time to play Cobbs Creek!
I found the greens to be in good condition and fairways were also fine. There are certainly some rough bits and the recent complaints are fair. #3 green was lost this summer and the paths are in rough shape. #5 hole is in bad shape too. So do stay away if you expect more for $20.
To me this is a last chance to look at the existing layout before it gets changed back to the original layout. I plan to play there one or 2 more times before it closes.
Best of luck to the Cobbs Creek Foundation and all the players who love Cobbs Creek.
Bella Vista Golf Course
Played On 09/14/2015Outing beforehand
This club certainly is willing to overbook. They had a shotgun outing around 9AM and the number of groups starting around our 1136 on a Monday morning was more than the course could handle. They've done this before.
Other than that its a good course by architect Jim Blaukovitch who typically does courses that are good for both average and better golfers.
Wyncote Golf Club
Played On 07/09/2014Go Play it!
Wyncote is in great condition right now. The greens are rolling nice and the fescue is high and penal (don't bother looking). The first cut of rough is not too high; just right really. Tee it forward if its windy - as it usually is at Wyncote.
I also have to note that I lost my rangefinder on the course. The staff was very helpful about that and a patron turned it in. I would have liked to thank that patron in person.
Edgmont Country Club
Played On 07/07/2014Why did they paint the greens?
These had to be the worst greens I've seen since last winter. They were very slow, with patchy bare spots, and uneven cutting. Some places were dyed or painted a bluish green for whatever reason.
The traps were horrible. No sand and unraked. Fairways were ok but shaggy in places. Some tees were not level but not too bad.
Yet, It was nice for me to play something so close to home. I've actually played it a few times since its so close and there is not much DelCo public golf. But I could not recommend traveling any distance to play here. The layout does have potential and the setting is beautiful, right next to Ridley Creek State Park. If you are local give it a try.
But its no better than a medium grade municipal course, except for the pretty setting.
Golden Oaks Golf Club
Played On 7/15/2013A James Blaukovitch Course
As a reference point this course is by the same architect as for Bella Vista and Honeybrook. If you like one of these courses, you'll probably like the others. Try them all, I'd say.
Golden Oaks has more length than the other two but the teebox choice is a wide range. (7100, 6600, 6000, 5500, 5100) Fairways are wide, greens are large, trouble is there but usually not to close to the fairways. Two par three's are over water, but again, to large greens so they ought not to be too intimidating. The challenge is much determined by what length you choose.
I'll take the views at Golden Oaks over the housing development at Bella Vista. I prefer the greens at Honeybrook. They have more character. Golden Oaks' are big, slippery, and subtle, but mostly flat. All three of these are pretty nice places to play.
Linfield National Golf Club
Played On 4/24/2013What exactly do the mean by "National?"
This course gets some nice reviews but I don't get why. Yes the layout has potential and the greens have some character. But those green are also dreadfully slow. Expect to see weeds in the fairways, dandelions, and some bare patches. Maintenance is an issue.
Also, its a shooting gallery. #10 hole is the worst. Its a dogleg right and #8 green sits 70 yards from #10 green, center-to-center, on the inside of the dogleg! Push your #10 tee shot to the right and your next shot needs to go over #8 green.
Perhaps local comparisons are best. Its similar in quality to Limerick, but not at all in the same class as Raven's Claw, Bella Vista, or Turtle Creek.
They may as well call it Linfield International, or Linfield Intergalactic. FWIW. No way should it be getting 4 or 5 stars.
Pilgrim's Oak Golf Course
Played On 04/08/2013One of my favorite courses
Speedy greens, some false fronts and apron runoffs, elevation changes. Lots of variety to the layout.
Teebox choices provide the level of challenge you want. Don't go too far back the first time!
