Arbor Hills Golf Club
Played On 09/20/2014Great Old Course, Well Maintained
Arbor Hills is a well maintained, traditional style golf course. I thoroughly enjoy golfing well designed, older courses, especially when they are as well maintained as Arbor Hills. Basically, any link to Donald Ross or A.W. Tillinghast will guarantee you an enjoyable round, you just need to appreciate the subtlety of what a historic course like this offers. I think its simplicity and straight forward design is what makes it a pretty great course. Lenawee Country Club and Jackson Country Club are definitely nicer courses, however they are still private. Arbor Hills, as a former private country club, offers a similar playing experience with very good course conditions at a great price. I highly recommend you play it - it's not pretentious, it's just a nice course that offers a refreshing step back in time.
The Rose Golf Course
Played On 09/06/2014Nice Course, Definitely a Hidden Gem
Add this to the list of courses to play in the Cadillac/Big Rapids area. Nicely cut out of hardwoods, and the holes are not on top of each other, so it's a very peaceful round. Not super long, very few (if any) bunkers on the course - its challenge is its tree lined holes and rolling hills. Greens were very nice as well, rolled great, very receptive to approach shots. Pro shop staff was very nice as well.
The Nightmare
Played On 08/30/2014Fantastic Course, Excellent Conditions Tee to Green!!
Beautiful golf course. I expected pretty good conditions from the things I've heard, however, tee to green, the course was in phenomenal shape. Greens were gorgeous, and large. Fairway landing areas were generous also, but well placed bunkers - and they are large - come in to play constantly. Although the name suggests otherwise, this course is very fair to play for mid to high handicappers. It's visually an outstanding golf course, and it's laid out wonderfully. I'd highly recommend it. I know some feel the price is a bit steep, however, the quality of golf and the experience you get from playing a course like this is worth it. I've played rounds at much poorer courses for only $20 or $30 less. Don't worry, that little bit of extra money is well worth it.
Hidden Oaks Golf Course
Played On 08/23/2014Good Course, Love the Back 9
Greens in good shape, fairways decent, but could use a little more upkeep. Tee boxes were decent as well, also could use a little more tending to. Front nine is the original nine, kind of has that 'farm land turned golf course feel,' which isn't necessarily a bad thing. 6,7, 8, and 9 are a nice stretch of holes, the others on the front aren't anything too special. The back nine makes this course really interesting - tight, some water and forced carries - Jerry Matthews did a nice job with the land they had. If you're in the area, check it out. But if you're interested in playing more upscale courses, stick to Mount Pleasant (Pohl Cat, Bucks Run, Riverwood). I'd play there again just for the uniqueness of the back nine, or if you're only out to play 9, try to play the back 9. When I was at CMU 10 years ago, my buddies and I liked the variety of Hidden Oaks, we would drive down from Mount Pleasant and play it - less crowded and decent rates.
Hills Heart of the Lakes Golf Course
Played On 07/05/2014Always Well Maintained, Tee to Green
Great course for all types of players. It's not overly difficult, with the exception of a few holes. 16, 17, and 18 are a tough stretch for anyone, but overall, the course is very fair. The price is affordable, the food is good, and it's always in great shape.
Hemlock Golf Club
Played On 06/07/2014Fantastic Course, A Hidden Gem!
Fantastic golf course, conditions were exceptional. The golfing experience and uniqueness of the course immediately vaulted it into my top 5 in the state. The course definitely has the "up north" feel, but with a distinctly "southern coast" influence. There are quite a few holes that, if you dropped someone off that didn't know where they were, would immediately think they were playing a course in the coastal Carolinas or Georgia. Tall pines and hardwoods, large waste areas and wetlands, and dunes and bunkering that are unlike any other course in the state, with maybe the exception of The Grande in Jackson being close behind. The course feels very natural in the sense that I didn't feel any holes were shoehorned in or contrived, each one is different and many are very memorable. Because of it's location, the course is relatively flat, with subtle undulations. Greens are large and receptive, and were in beautiful shape. The fairways were also in great shape, and are well proportioned - landing areas are generous but not huge.
Washtenaw Golf Club
Played On 06/01/2014Fantastic Older Course, Classic Design
Tee to green, excellent early season conditions. I love courses like this designed prior to WWII, very classic elements - rolling topography, well placed bunkers, undulating greens. Play it if you get the opportunity.
Michaywe Pines Golf Course
Played On 1/21/2013Great Course, Hidden Gem of Gaylord
Nice course, always well maintained, some of the best greens in the area. Course not highly advertised compared to others in the Gaylord area, but worth playing, good value. Nice layout, no real quirky or gimmicky holes, just straight forward golf on a well maintained and very fair course.
