About

First money earned as a caddy at Summit Hills Country Club in Edgewood, Ky where I developed my lifelong love for golf. Played a lot of golf until entered working field as an adult, then only now and then. Retired now and playing as much as I can. Its a great game that singles, groups, couples of all different skill levels can enjoy lifelong anywhere in the world, offering spectacular views, great lodging and dining and the opportunity to make new friends.

TEE PLACEMENT MISTAKE

Today was the fourth time I have played this course. I enjoy almost everything about the course and the condition for the price to play is very reasonable. The layout and water require smart thinking as to how to play this tract whereby good placement of shots is rewarded and bad is punished. There exists a serious flaw concerning the 14th hole relative to tee placement and scorecard marked yardage that golfers need to know and that course ownership needs to correct as they are aware of the mistake. When teeing off from the GREEN tee the stated scorecard yardage is shown as 138 yards however tee placement is actually 170 yards on the back tee bed which is ten yards closer than the WHITE tee which is placed at 180 yards and noted correctly on the scorecard. This problem has happened since the hole number has been changed but the scorecard yardage has not been corrected. Management needs to print new scorecards to correct this error. Another solution is available which would reduce the error but not totally correct it. There are two separate tee locations for this hole one forward the other back. If the GREEN markers were placed on the back of the forward tee the yardage would actually be 130 which is only 8 yards different from the scorecard stated 138 yards. This would however then change the actual placement and yardage of both the gold and red tees having to move them forward to allow placement of the GREEN marker. While not a perfect solution it is much more accurate than placement on the back tee at 170 and card marked at 138. To completely correct this error the course ownership could simply have new scorecards printed. I will be leaving town soon and will miss playing this course but I did want to point this out to other golfers who might not have a laser to shoot the yardage before hitting their tee shot on this hole. This is my only complaint about this course. I have been playing golf for 55 years and am somewhat a purist and overlook many little discrepancies however a marked mistake of 32 yards I believe should be pointed out and ownership should be called out for not taking corrective action.

Disappointed Round

Course did not live up to the hype. Fairways were mostly thin and lots of brown. Layout was good but shots were difficult due to course conditions. Seems like staff was more interested in wrapping up their day then serving their customers. On a fairly warm day no drinking water on course and only saw the refreshment cart person at the turn as she was preparing to quit for the day. She never bothered to ask us if there was anything we wanted. Pro shop was already closed at this time. When we finished our round only person remaining was the cart person and the outside bathrooms were locked. We asked to use them and he had to get the keys. Very doubtful I will play this course again.

Unique Course

Enjoyed my first round at this course on Sanibel Island. Was paired with one other golfer for the first nine played backside by myself. Tees, fairways and greens all very well grassed better than most other courses I have played at this time. Traps well sanded and raked with loose sand. Layout of course very nice as well. Enjoyed myself immensely and would definitely play this course again.

Exception to most SW Florida Courses

I love that this course is not like most other local courses in that it's not squeezed on all sides by condos and houses. It also has some elevation to it which adds to shot placement. Tees and greens are well grasses, greens roll true albeit a little slow. Traps are full of sand and well kept as sand is soft. Fairways are better than average and a little thin in some areas but overall very playable. Pace of play was just under 4 hours. Would definitely play again and have done so as of this writing. Well worth the drive up from Naples to Cape Coral.

Course great, Management not

I have no complaints as to the course. I enjoyed it very much. Conditions very good, layout great, has a special appeal for an older course. Only problem was with course management. First no rangers on course. Second management not following golf ettiquet. I booked an 11:40 tee time for 1 player. The threesome ahead of me booked the same time. No one at course suggested the two groups play together to make it a foursome. I had no problem with that however after the first nine the threesome ahead of me went into the clubhouse to purchase food items and beverages. As the tee was open when I made the turn I was prevented from going ahead to finish my back 9. It seemed like the young starter had no clue that the long standing rule at all courses that if you enter the clubhouse and a person or group behind does not and wants to continue on with the back nine the group stopping at the turn forfeits their place in line. The 10th hole was completely open when I was prevented from teeing off. This threesome of young inexperienced players often hit two and sometimes 3 extra shots on several holes on the front nine and there were no rangers on the course to address this. While I enjoyed my round it took way too long to complete play.

Best Public Course All Around

I play with a group of retirees, 20 to 40 players weekly where we play different Indiana courses with a shotgun start. Each time we play this course we collectively are amazed at the quality of the condition of the course, the carts and the friendliness of the staff. The bent grass tees and fairways are plush, greens run true and hold shots into them. Sand traps are full and raked. Electric carts with auto brakes are best you can find anywhere. Yesterday we brought 37 golfers and to a man each heaped praise on the quality of this course and we don't say that lightly. We are a very intense group of better than average players who appreciate course management and quality and this course consistently is among the best. Course is also very picturesque and offers a good challenge in the skill of play. Very reasonably priced for overall quality.

State Park Benefits

Played an early afternoon round as a twosome and paired up with two fine gentlemen to make foursome. Thanks to Harvey and Ron for making our round very enjoyable. For November, the course was in very good condition, tees well grassed, fairways plush, rough fair, and greens rolled true. Course has experienced the emerald ash borer problem and several trees were felled last year and stump removal being done now. Got a great rate on Golf Now, limited concessions at this time of year, but staff very friendly. Course located inside state park with many facilities, including lodge with restaurant which we ate at after round, the beef brisket is very good and fireplace very warming. Rooms at lodge or cabins and camping makes for a nice weekend or extended stay weekly with many amenities other than golf. We always enjoy the trip from Cincinnati to this college town with a great state park and a very good and challenging golf course. We will be back for many more rounds.

Voting Day Round

Voted in morning then played golf on a cool cloudy day, fared much better then the Dems. Played white then red nines and found the fairways to be in the best shape of any course we played this year. Hats off to the grounds staff who have them as if it was early May. Greens are always tough but fair, key is to keep ball below the hole. Used a reward from Golf Now which gave us two rounds for price of one. The only problem I have with this course is the infrastructure needs attention and some work, specifically the aging cart paths and wear spots on, around and just leaving them. This condition has been noted on all three nines at this facility. On the blue nine they dumped a load of dirt in the spring to fill in a dangerous area leaving one green but the pile still sits, no one bothered to spread it around. I suggest everyone who plays this course to complain to the Billy Casper management as words to local staff fall on deaf ears. That is a shame as the course fairways and greens are some of the best in this area.

Weekday Fall Round

Played a morning fall round on a sunny brisk day. Course had been aerated two weeks earlier and we found fairways and greens back to normal conditions. Fairways were well grassed and greens held shots and rolled true. Got a great price on Golf Now and when arrived at course found out it was customer appreciation weekend and received a free lunch. That was a very nice touch to finish off a great day. Course was not crowded and we moved right along completing round in under 4 hours.

The Good, The Bad and the Beautiful

First the Good: Arrived a day before we were to play, and asked if we could take a cart and drive the course, they were very gracious in allowing our request. This tour of each hole allowed us not only to see the layout of holes but also to know how to play each hole. The tees were well grassed, fairways plush, rough fair, and greens looked good as well. In playing the course the next day we found the greens held shots well and putted true. Course has a nice mixture of water and sand hazards and several tee locations offering many challenging holes, playing long from the back tees. The Bad: Last year we made a special trip from Cincinnati to play this course only to find out the course was closed for aerating, however there was no mention of that on their website. This year we called ahead and was given an Oct 6th date for aeration to begin. We were shocked to find that during our round on Oct 2nd the process had begun on some of the holes. If you are advising when work is to be done then please stick to your schedule. This fact alone caused me to not rate this course as high as it should be. Finally The Beautiful: Course is very scenic with lots of wildlife observed among the Welsh hills and valleys. The 18th tee is elevated and offers a spectacular scenic view of a very large area showing some of the famous landmark buildings in this area. This is a Donald Ross designed course, however holes 15 thru 17 have been redesigned to allow upscale housing. These holes are very different then all others as there are extremely steep inclined peaks and valleys with twists and turns on the layout. While these are not Ross designed they still are very interesting holes and were very enjoyable and somewhat difficult to play. Overall we enjoyed the experience and with a little better course management could say it is a bucket list course to play.

Mid Afternoon Sunny Day Round

Played on a day course had two outings, started on back nine, some wait but not too long, as a threesome moved along fairly well. Course overall in excellent shape.ood level tees, plush fairways. fair rough, greens that held shots and rolled fast but true, course has lots of sand traps and a fair amount of water, set amongst a real estate development of single family houses, fairways wide to accept less than perfect tee shots. Only two blemishes were spike marks on greens from heavy play that day and noticeable rocks in sand traps. Clubhouse is an older converted home, signage poor as to where pro shop located. Course had starters for both nines with rangers out on course, coolers filled with cold water. Played from blue tees which were 6,400 yards, black at 7,000 white 5,800, also gold and red each less. Five different tee locations offers a good range to match talent. One of the five best courses I played locally in last two years, price of $13 on golf now was worth the hour drive. Scorecard has map showing each hole with some yardage indicators between tees and sand traps, or trees including size of each green which is helpful. Card also specifies course uses red, white & blue pin placements and same colors marked as yardage indicators on cart paths with yardage also marked on sprinkler heads. Course has a large on site practice area which is nice.

Late Afternoon Mid Week Round

Good price from golf now made a one hour drive worthwhile. Course not crowded and moved right along on front side. Hole locations next to each other allowed for errant tee shots, straight off tee allowed for fairly easy approach shots to greens which rolled true, however cups had not been changed in a while and had grass growing over edge of hole causing anything but dead center hits to roll out which is inexcusable. I had five lip outs during round which was very unlike my putting. Course has unusual layout including five par fives including back to back on nine and ten, and six par threes, including two of more than 180 yards from the blue and two which were 200+ including one of 250 from blue and 225 from white. One of the par threes has an island green which doesn't hold anything but a high shot into it. Fairways had a mixture of grasses with some thin spots, course has several water holes and a fair amount of sand traps. Overall course has an interesting layout with these unique features making it different from most courses. They put a threesome in front of us on the back nine which caused some waits and that was uncalled for as we were challenged to finish before dark. Poor management decision there, saw no rangers on course. Scorecard is well designed with pin locations 1 thru 4 and maps of each hole with detailed water, sand and yardages from various points which is a very nice touch

Birthday Morning Round

Started on back nine due to outing and moved quickly along. I played from tips and used driver frequently unlike some reviews that recommend not to. I hit a long ball with accuracy and feel the key is in placing the drive. I like the rolling, hilly terrain which gives the course its special character. Fairways had been recently aerated but posed no problems. Greens roll true and are in good shape. Rough is a little less defined than other courses but very manageable. Course knowledge, accuracy and placement is the key to shooting a good round here. Hole 8 a long par 3 requires extreme accuracy in both length and direction to par and is an easy double or triple bogey waiting to happen. Hole 15 a par 5 requires pinpoint placement with two doglegs and many mature trees making cutting the doglegs very unlikely. It is definately a thinking hole which if played strategically par is attainable. Beer cold, food good, staff friendly and ranger with ice and water visits on course is a nice touch. Proshop well stocked with fair pricing. Course is located in a Hamilton County park and requires either a yearly sticker or an additional $3 per visit to enter. No houses in a wooded setting makes for a very private round of golf.

Late Afternoon Mid Week Round

Very nice layout, front nine wide open with scattered houses, back nine entirely through woods with holes spaced apart. Excellent fairways and greens, rough fair, sand traps filled with sand, several water hazards. Course can be played from 6 separate tee locations which gives an opportunity for all skill levels. Previously a private club, now public, got a great price on golf now otherwise a little pricey. Scorecard has map layout of each hole showing water and sand with tips on playing hole which is a very helpful touch. Yardage ranges from 4,900 to 6,900 yards. We played round using 3 tee locations to get a feel for each. Course has a 19th par 3 hole over water as an extra bonus. Definately one of the nicer courses in the greater Cincinnati area. No complaints, pace of play good, staff helpful, rangers on course, beer cold, extensive bar area, didn't try food, pro shop well stocked but pricey. First time playing but will be back for more rounds.

Saturday Early Evening Fun

While not a long course with the exception of a 571 yard par 5 from the blue tees, this 9 hole course with different tee spots for 18 hole rounds requires precise shot placement and club selection to targets for good approach shots to the greens. Course has sand traps, water hazards and greens that roll true and are all well maintained. Course is a hidden gem at the end of a residential street in the Mt. Healthy neighborhood that is surrounded by a wooded area with creeks running through the course and is very picturesque as well. Clubhouse well stocked with very good prices and very friendly staff who try very hard to make your round very enjoyable. Have played here 3 times and plan to play more frequently, in a mixed couple arrangement. Course offers a nice 5pm, 9 hole, 2 person team outing every Sunday and awards prizes for different things on several holes, which makes for a fun time. No weekly commitment required, just show up b4 5, cost is $15 per player including electric carts. Have also played course with male buddies in a foursome setting and they all enjoyed course as well
