Nice course, but needs a better source of water.

The course was in great shape and the pace of play was about 3.5 hours for 18 holes. The weekday senior rate is very generous.
It was a hot day. In fact, it was so hot that the man in the pro shop told us that if we got too hot, to come back in and we could get a rain check. However, we were told by the marshal we could not take frozen water bottles we brought from home onto the course. I do understand why the course would prohibit bringing in soft drinks, sports drinks, ... but on a day when the heat index is over 100, not allowing someone to bring in a bottle of ice seems strange. He told us we could find ice water on the course at the restrooms. We did not. There was a fountain at both restrooms. The water was warm, there were no cups and it tasted like it had come from an old garden hose. You don't have bottles to put water in because the marshal said that wasn't allowed. Especially in the summer, I think that common sense should be used for water or get actual ice coolers of water and paper cups on the course to help with hydration. The marshal was polite and was following course policy. I just think the policy on water is misguided.
Other than the issue of trying to stay hydrated on a very hot day with no cold water, the round was enjoyable and I will play there again.

Seeing is Believing

Few places actually live up to the hype that they receive. Sweeten's Cove actually lives up to the hype and more. When you drive up, the initial impression is underwhelming. Gravel parking lot, portable bathrooms and a backyard storage shed to check in. Once you get out of the car, you start to understand the hype. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The putting green is like a roller coaster, with unbelievable twists and turns. We spent 30 minutes on it before and after playing 27 holes just having fun. You have a great view of the entire course and surrounding mountains from the shed area. It's just stunning.
Now for the golf. WOW is my best summary. The tees are wide open with large landing areas. The approach shots are a challenge and the short game when you miss a green presents extreme situations. It took far too many holes for me to figure out that I needed to leave the lob wedge in the back and use a putter anytime I was on short grass within 20-30 feet of the green. Just a couple of feet short or long of the needed landing area on approaches, chips and pitches would find the ball rolling back to your feet or off the backside of the green. Don't worry about your score. Just enjoy the experience. You will likely have a big number or two around the course. Just take a deep breath, a quick look at the mountains and realize that there is more to golf than posting a low score on a hole.
This was truly a fun day. The late morning 9 was a little slow and stayed backed up till we got past #5. Then the pace picked up to a fun level. The last 2 nines were very fast, as the course seemed to start clearing out after noon.
I plan to return. You should play this course. You'll be glad you did.

Good conditions for Mid-December

I play Oak Hills10-12 times a year. It is a fun layout with some easy holes and a few very challenging greens. Pace of play is usually in the 3 hour range and the value for the cost is excellent. The greens were great for a winter round. I will continue keeping this on my courses I regularly play.

First Time Playing

First time to play this fun course. It won't be the last.

I visited Oak Hills for the first time. It won't be my last visit. We played 27 holes in just over 4.5 hours on a Saturday afternoon. They have great rates and the replay is just $6 per 9 holes. I plan to add it to my regular course rotation. The main negatives were no true driving range (although there appeared to be a practice area if you bring your shag bag.) and a few bare spots on a couple of fairways and tees. The clubhouse is old, but that doesn't really matter to me. I don't spend much time inside. The staff was extremely friendly and polite.
Now to the course. There are several blind shots that will give you problems on your first visit. The second time we played the front nine we knew what to expect. #2 is a bear and a grizzly bear at that. It is a tight par 5 that is a real challenge. A couple of par 5's are very reachable in 2 and there is one par 4 on the back 9 that is reachable. The front nine has several very challenging holes and the back 9 was just a lot of fun to play. The greens were nice and rolled true. I hope to play this course many more times.

Great greens, fun layout

My son and I were staying in Asheboro while attending the US Open. We decided to play at Asheboro Country Club. The greens were very good. They were smooth and rolled true. The fairways were average. The only negative was that some of the tees had not been mowed in a few days. The course is scenic and has some fun elevation changes. It was an enjoyable round. I would play it again if I am in the area.
