First off, its an amazing layout! Not indicative of a west Texas course. That said, its very score-able. Its also a course, depending on wind, you can blow up on.
As a solid ball striker, its fairway, green, 2-3 putt (sometimes a 1 putt if you know where to leave your approach based on pin position).
The main defense of the course is its visual trickery and bunkers. Most fairway bunkers are in play from 220-280 yrds off the tee. Challenge them successfully, and birdies are a plenty! Unsuccessful challenges, and you pay the price, big time!
I’ve played 2 rounds there. Both from the White tees (2nd furthest: 6800+, I think). I shot 79/80. With 2 lost balls (the fescue is death) on each rd and 4 three putts on the 79 and 6 three putts on the 80.
Greens were in bad shape, but I had heard a chemical misused was to blame, not really the normal green conditions. That said, ALWAYS be below the hole. Greens are very undulated, but true. Stay below the hole and a 2 putt is likely.
All par 5’s are reachable in 2, if 300 off the tee. If not, the back nine par 5’s require a lay up.
Overall, this course tests mental ability as much as physical. Be smart, take your medicine when your in trouble, get out with a bogey. Dont be a hero. There are more birdies available to get that stroke back!
PS: my playing partner was 68 yrs old, 15 handicap and shot a 90 from the Reds. He hits it about 230 off the tee. And those tees were perfect for him! Maybe even a BIT long. FYI.
Cheers
