Litchfield Country Club
Played On 03/01/2021Old School Country Club
This is a classic layout through a neighborhood. Course was in solid shape and has many doglegs, keeping the play off of the tee fun and engaging. Greens were in decent shape and pace was good. No complaints and a good value for the area! Serves as a good round to mix in if on a golf trip playing several courses....
Tobacco Road Golf Club
Played On 02/28/2021One of a kind...
Bucket list course. One of a kind experience. A must play for any fun loving golfer looking for something unique. Somewhat reminiscent of The Loop at Forest Dunes (MI), but with more elevation changes. I enjoyed the round and would like to replay now that I know the layout. Highly suggest a forecaddie for first timers, as there are a ton of blind shots and tricky nuances....
Chatuge Shores Golf Course
Played On 09/18/2020Solid Mountain Course
Chatuge is a solid option for those in the area. While it is not a high end track, it serves its purpose. Conditions weren't great but they also weren't bad. It fit well into our schedule and is a nice change of pace for those staying at the nearby Brasstown Resort who are looking to mix it up.
Pilgrim's Run Golf Club
Played On 06/19/2020Always the best!
Another great round at Pilgrim's Run, by far the best public course in the Grand Rapids area, according to this reviewer. Conditions were spectacular, greens rolling beautifully, layout is fun and pace was enjoyable. This is a must play course in West Michigan!
Brasstown Valley Resort
Played On 09/21/2019Another fun weekend at Brasstown!
6th annual weekend of golf at Brasstown. Our foursome heads there every Sept and this year's retreat was as enjoyable as any of them.
A bit disappointed in condition of greens, as they seemed to be a bit diseased/rotted and also they recently punched and top dressed, but otherwise all was well. We made the best of it by instituting a 2-putt limit. Fun layout and mix of holes, lots of bunkers and some water in play as well. Tees are cut a tad shaggy for my liking but not to any detriment.
The resort itself is perfect for those looking for nice but not super-swanky. Pool, hot tub, gym, tennis, horseback riding, spa (offsite but close), as well as a sports-bar/pub and a nicer sit-down restaurant all provide a solid place for the group to stay and play. We'll be back!
Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course
Played On 09/19/2019Great course, service ruined the experience
Our foursome takes an annual trip south to enjoy one last big weekend of golf every September. Legacy at Lake Lanier has been in the rotation since the beginning. It's one that we kickoff the weekend with and all really love the course. A fun challenge with awesome waterfront holes and a great lodge with onsite lake house accommodations.
But this year was different. The problems began upon arrival, when we were coldly greeted by a starter who claimed we did not have a tee time. OK, stuff happens, but I have the email confirmation of the booking, which was done directly on the course's website over a month in advance. That confirmation was enough to get us out, but it shouldn't have been an issue considering the course was literally wide open. The starter at the desk was combative about the situation and did not seem interested in having us there at all. The attitude continued with the ranger who really laid into us at the turn. His claim was that we had already played 18 and were trying to scam an additional nine. As absurd as that accusation was, we rolled with it as we were having a great time and simply wanted to finish our round before dark. At said turn, the clubhouse was locked, no restrooms, no food, no bevs.....nothing. Locked up and empty, there was no going inside, even though the round was to include said refreshments. That's when the ranger (or cart guy, bright green/yellow shirt) began yelling at our group. He was obviously drunk and rambling (with profanity) about us trying to cheat an extra 9 holes. It was embarrassing and really left a bad taste in our mouths. The shame of it all, is it is literally one of our favorite courses of the rotation and as mentioned, has become part of our annual trip. Having spent my entire career in the customer service industry, I was beside myself. I couldn't imagine ever talking to a customer the way he did to us. Completely and totally unacceptable. If one of my employees treated a customer that way, they would no longer be employed...end of story.
It will be very hard for us to return knowing we, for some reason, were not welcome. We are all confused and upset by the situation, as we're not trouble makers. Rather, we're a group of four college buddies whom have managed to keep this tradition alive well into our 40s. We're not obnoxious kids, wild partiers, or the type that scam anything. We're four professionals whom manage to get a weekend away from our careers and families each September to treat ourselves to a nice outing.
It was extremely unfortunate that we were treated as such. And while I'd like to recommend this course to others, it will come with a warning to do so with caution, as you may not be welcome, and even worse, may even be accused of trying to scam extra holes when you are simply trying to make the turn....
Pilgrim's Run Golf Club
Played On 05/19/2019Another Great Experience
Yet another great experience at Pilgrim's Run today! Due to the off and on rain and storms today, we had the course to ourselves, AND were lucky enough to only have seen about 10 mins of downpour. Otherwise the weather was pretty nice actually, with even some sunshine for the closing 5-6 holes.
Conditions were excellent as usual and as expected on this well maintained, wooded course. And despite the rain, the greens were rolling like a dream!
Pilgrim's Run continues to confirm itself year after year as the GR area's #1 course, in my opinion!
Hello Mark, thank you for the amazing review! We are glad to hear about your recent experience and you sticking out the rain. Please come back out and visit us again soon.
Diamond Springs Golf Course
Played On 04/20/2019A Hidden Gem
Diamond Springs is a surprisingly nice track hidden away in the farm country southeast of GR. I enjoyed the layout which meandered around a large ravine and cut through some woods and fields. Conditions were good and the fairway tee boxes were fine. If it weren't for slow play in front of us, it would have been a real solid experience.
The Classic Club
Played On 03/27/2019One of my new favorites
I've been trying 2-3 new courses over my last 4-5 trips to the PS area. This year Classic Club made the rotation and all I can say is Wow! I wish I would've tried this one sooner. What a great treat!
Course is a solid layout and was in incredible shape. The bunkers were indeed in need of some help, but otherwise what a fabulous track to play. Top notch experience from arrival to departure and a great day of golf.
It is challenging but fair, and has pretty much every nuance of the game covered. I was able to use most of my bag which is always fun. Might be a tad pricey for some but worth it at least once. Play it!
Escena Golf Club
Played On 03/25/2019Fun course near airport
Enjoyed my round here. Conditions and layout were better than expected and the location is convenient. Will play again in the future...
The Heather at The Highlands (Boyne)
Played On 07/19/2017Solid original resort course
The Heathers is a nice, solid classic resort course, and the first one built at the Highlands, I believe. My round was enjoyable, if not a touch slow. And while this track is worth a play, I wouldn't suggest it over the other courses on-site, except maybe the Moors.
However, it is fairly well kept and is cut through a nice piece of land. A great addition to a golf vacation, assuming you also get to try the Ross Memorial and Aurthur Hills while there, as those two are more favorable plays in my opinion. Service was excellent as expected at Boyne.
Arthur Hills at The Highlands (Boyne)
Played On 07/18/2017Scenic layout and in good shape
The Hills is likely the most visually appealing of the Highlands. The highlight comes on the back nine with hole #13 having quite the view from the tee box. The course is in very good shape and seems, along with the Ross Memorial course, to be in slightly better condition than the other two located at Boyne Highlands (Moors, Heathers).
My only complaint would be regarding pace of play. It's not horrible, just very inconsistent. The front nine was moving right along, but the back was a log-jam due to a couple of groups of newbies who could've used some assistance from a ranger regarding pace-of-play etiquette, had one been present.
Regardless, the layout, condition and surroundings all outweigh what was likely an exception for such an esteemed resort. The service was excellent and the resort located in a beautiful area. I'd definitely return given the opportunity...
The Golf Club at Thornapple Pointe
Played On 07/09/2017Top local course
Top local course, especially when it comes to condition. For the amount of play it gets, Thornapple Pointe is consistent when it comes to upkeep. The greens are some of the truest rolling you can find in the area (non-private). However, it is very busy at peak times and can get a bit slow moving on occasion, I've had to trudge through a few 5+ hour rounds in the past. And some dislike the "transportation" theme of it beings located next to an airport, two highways, an active river and split by train tracks. I'll admit it can be a bit distracting, but the consistent conditions and nice layout outweigh the cons in my opinion. Play it.
The Dream Golf Course
Played On 07/08/2017Nice round at The Dream
First time visiting the Dream and very happy with the experience. While not a top notch elite course in Michigan, I'd call it a solid 4-star track, not to mention solid and friendly service! The spread is a bit reminiscent of Pilgrims Run north of Grand Rapids, but maybe a half-star behind in my rating.
The course is cut through the woods which rarely allows you to see anything but the hole you're on. It is well kept, not tour caliber, but good enough for any non-pro. Just enough dog-legs and green undulation to keep things fun and challenging.
I'd definitely return if in the area again....
Port at Harborside International Golf Center
Played On 06/30/2017Fun Course - Good Shape
I'm a fan of well maintained courses and Harborside didn't disappoint. The Port course was a well maintained, solid layout that treated us well. Overall we enjoyed our round.
Pilgrim's Run Golf Club
Played On 06/25/2017My Local Favorite
Of all the GR area (non-private) courses, I'd rank Pilgrims Run #1. A round here is more of a journey through the woods of West Michigan than anything. I've played it dozens of times and yet to have a round where I didn't see abundant wildlife such as turkeys, deer and foxes.
On top of that, the conditions are perfect and the course is looking as beautiful as ever! A solid layout that's fun to play. Highly recommended and looking forward to returning soon!
Silver Lake Country Club
Played On 05/06/2017Horrible Greens
Thought we'd try out a new track and sprung for a $35 tee time on Golfnow. Wasn't expecting a high end experience, but having learned that this was a private club that recently turned public, I did expect a decent course. The layout is old school, a bit tight and working it's way through a neighborhood. Tee boxes and fairways were in OK shape, but the greens were some of the worst I've seen. Literally like putting on legos, the ball bounced around like it was playing plinko. Pace of play was the highlight simply because there was only a handful of groups on the course, on a sunny Saturday afternoon in May. That says a lot.
Not worth the $$ and very doubtful I will return. Hope someone either buys this place and reinvests in it, or just shut it down....
West at Gracewil Country Club
Played On 04/09/2017Bottom Feeder
Good for brand new beginners.
Cheapest green fees in town. Must be because they don't employ a grounds crew, as this place was a mess. Overgrown, beat up, soaking wet, soggy, cart paths look like some Detroit streets. Totally not maintained when we played in April. Lot's of denim and sleeveless shirts. Yes, it's first come-first served, has a friendly staff and features 1980's prices, but that might be about the last time anyone did any work to it.
Skip it unless you're super desperate or super broke. If the latter, you may be able to cover your costs by collecting enough empty Natural Ice beer cans during your round and returning them to the nearby Walmart afterwards... :-)
Indian Wells Golf Resort - Players Course
Played On 02/16/2017Great experience at Indian Wells
What can I say? The experience from arrival to departure was top notch. The service, course conditions, layout, amenities...everything was great! No complaints at all!
The Ravines Golf Club
Played On 08/27/2016Decent Track
Nice payout, plays short from the white tees, lots of layups. Greens were rolling true despite raining all morning before the round. Nice mix of holes, some forced carries and a couple risk-reward opportunities. I'd return, especially on a discounted rate.
We love hearing about our golfers' experiences, Please tell us more about what you enjoyed during your round. Thanks for choosing Pilgrim's Run Golf Club!
