Mountain/Forest at Stratton Mountain Country Club
Played On 08/22/2018We have been coming for 3 years, and it's in the best shape we have seen.
Everything is great at Stratton all 3 nines are nice, although Forest is my favorite. Not the hardest course you have ever played, but it is still a great course. There is nothing that can improve about the course, it is in spectacular shape.
Gillette Ridge
Played On 08/17/2018One of our favorite courses, but disappointed this time around.
Last year, the conditions were amazing, comparable to the nearby Wintonbury, but there has been a decline this year. Not saying the conditions are bad, but it is a noticeable decline from last year.
The pace today was absolutely awful. 5 hours. On our second time around there was an approaching T-Storm, and thunder was heard and lightning was seen, but no horn was blown. We decided to head in because it was looking really bad. We went in and got a raincheck and asked about the horn and they said you have to listen for a nearby course's horn. Really? That's dangerous!
North Course at Lake of Isles
Played On 07/27/2018As good as Connecticut/New England golf gets!
Many articles put Yale as the best golf course in CT... WRONG! IT IS LAKE OF ISLES 100%! Layout is spectacular, and you better bring your A game. Greens are lightning, fairways are immaculate and the rough is punishing. Course is in spectacular shape overall! Play it if you get a chance! You will be glad you did!
Brunswick Golf Club
Played On 07/21/2018Course in good shape tee to green.
Fun course to play with some very interesting holes like the 9th. Course is funky with back to back par 5s, then back to back par 3s on the front. Some holes are a little too much up and down, but that's only for a couple holes. Fairways are the highlight of the course. They also mix in some fescue, which could be expanded out around bunkers and expanded closer to the fairway which would make the course even nicer than it is now. It is definitely worth a try.
Sable Oaks Golf Club
Played On 07/20/2018Nothing Great, I wouldn't play again or recommend.
Tee boxes and fairways in OK shape, greens were like putting on wet cement. Very hard holes, and the hard, dry rough made it even harder. Slight slice/slight hook=woods. By the 8th hole i realized it wasn't worth taking a good ball out of the bag. Pin placements on some holes were crazy, almost if a pro tournament was going to be there. But this course certainly isn't hosting a pro tournament. Course is very congested, some tee boxes very close to each other, greens close to tee boxes, and fairways near fairways. Watch out on the cart path from hole 2 to 3, as there are overgrown prickers on it. We were driving along and one hit me on my arm. I think a lot of the people staying at the hotels right near the course get suckered into playing it. Don't be another victim of Sable Oaks.
Sanford Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2018What a deal!
$25 with a cart for 18 after 2 is a steal. Course in good shape. Rough a bit hard and dry, but fairways, greens, and tee boxes in good shape. Fun layout. Staff was extremely friendly. Go play it!
The Ranch Laguna Beach
Played On 07/04/2018Not worth the money
We paid $44 EACH to play 9 holes AND WE WALKED! Course is not even close to worth that. Plus, the starter was a bit rude. We were playing with a friend who only plays 2 or 3 times per year, and he shanked his first tee shot. He starts to tee up another ball when the starter says "people waiting behind you. No mulligans." Really dude? We had just waited 10 minutes for the group in front of us to clear and hitting one single ball will not slow play whatsoever. Now the course. The greens were quite slow and very flat, making the course easy. The fairways needed a cut, all kinds of different grass out there. The bunkers are in poor shape, and some are made out of recycled glass, which is almost a completely different surface even though they are supposed to be bunkers. Plus the divot mix is also made of recycled glass, and it seemed like the divot had a hard time growing back with glass rather than sand or dirt. Pace of play was also terrible. 2:30 minutes for a par 32. Play a real course like Arroyo Trabuco, Tijeras Creek, or Monarch Beach if your willing to pay a bit.
Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club
Played On 07/03/2018Nice course
Course in really good shape. Would have been a five star but a couple things bothered me. There were these yellow strings sticking up on the sides of the fairways, they were obviously there for a reason, but I'm not sure why. Also on the 16th blue tee, you have a creek directly in front of you with a big plant that kinda gets in the way of your shot. The 6500 yard blues aren't too hard if you are a good 6, 7, 8, 9 iron player. Beautiful piece of property with tons of wild life. Being on vacation from New England it's nice to see new animals like Roadrunners. Definitely play if your in the area.
Tijeras Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/02/2018Wow. Course was spectacular.
Terrific conditions tee to green, just be aware that there are bunker renovations on several holes. This does not really effect play. Great layout, poses a challenge from the 6500 yard blues, but you are rewarded when you hit a good shot. Lots of downhill holes, so the 6500 plays a little shorter. Great views of various mountains and foothills. Great course, worth a drive.
South at Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course
Played On 07/01/2018Spectacular!
This will probably be the best golf course you will ever play. Great conditions, awesome views, and of course a U.S. Open course. A must play course.
Eighteen Hole at Balboa Park Municipal Golf Club
Played On 06/30/2018Good layout, good greens, fairways and tee boxes could use some water
Fun layout. Some easy holes and some hard holes playing the blue tees. Some very long par 4s, for example the 450 yard 10th. Long par 3s as well.
Fairways and tee boxes not in good shape. Many bare spots.
Course has great potential.
Eighteen Hole at Balboa Park Municipal Golf Club
Played On 06/29/2018Avoid at all costs!
We booked this thinking it was 9 holes at the real course, but we quickly realized that that was not the case. We were not aware that this course existed. It probably shouldn't exist. The tee boxes are so hard that you are afraid to take a divot out of them! You can barely tell the difference between the fairways and the rough! The only good thing about this place is the greens because the people that play out there aren't hitting any, so they are easy to keep in shape. The course should probably be paved over to be completely honest. Give the real course a shot, it's a nice layout.
Coronado Golf Course
Played On 06/29/2018Great fairways and tee boxes, greens in good shape.
Great conditions overall. Only problem is the pace of play. Great views of the bridge over the little bay, and a shipyard right next to the course. Good rates as well. Not Torrey Pines, but definitely a good course to play in the San Diego area.
North at Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course
Played On 06/27/2018Great place!
Much easier than the south course, with less bunkers and not as long. It could be argued that the north is more scenic than the south, with spectacular ocean and canyon views. Conditions a little worse than the south, but still very good.
Lake of Isles is Better than The Course at Yale??? I don't think so. The Yale course is iconic. Ree-Jones is a great architect BUT Seth Raynor and CB Macdonald are legendary architects.
Having said this, the Lake of Isles course is pretty fantastic; and if you are a true aficionado of golf architecture, you will play BOTH Yale and Lake of Isles North:)
Thank you for your review of Lake of Isles. We are thrilled you enjoyed your round. Come back in the fall and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage.
