Pleasant Valley Country Club
Played On 05/27/2021A good, straightforward golf course
I've played Pleasant Valley a handful of times over the last few years and it's never disappointed. It's not the longest or most challenging course you'll ever play, but the layout has character.
The course was in very good condition, aside from a couple of tee boxes. The greens were well maintained and rolled true. The staff were very friendly and helpful during my interactions with them. Pace of play was excellent, even though the course was solidly booked. I will definitely play this course again!
Madison Country Club
Played On 10/08/2015Great value!
Madison CC is an older country club that recently opened for public play. Although not designed by Donald Ross, it has many of the classic Ross design standards, including small and elevated greens and using the natural terrain for proper drainage. The sand traps were in good to excellent condition and played fairly.
The course was in excellent shape. Some of the fairways had been aerated, but the greens and tee boxes had not. I was told by someone inside the course superintendent usually waits until late in the season to do the aeration.
I teed off as a single but met up with a twosome on the second hole as they were waiting to tee off. Pace of play wasn't bad although we had to wait at times for our shots.
Everyone I spoke to at the course was very friendly and helpful. The pro shop, restrooms and food areas were small and dated, but the food and beverage options were good.
I will be back to play this course again.
Little Mountain Country Club
Played On 09/27/2015Bunkers are getting better, but some still need work
I've played Little Mountain CC for the last decade or so, and you can see the promised improvements are starting to come to fruition. Several bunkers have been rebuilt or repaired, but others need to be fixed badly. The starter told us the course owners were going to fix those bunkers during the offseason.
Aside from the bunkers needing repair, the course was in excellent shape from tee to green. The greens were playing pretty fast, and on more than on occasion, they had a fair amount of hidden break.
The staff at the course were friendly and helpful. No one did anything that would deter me from coming back.
Hawks Nest Golf Club
Played On 07/12/2014Still one of the best in Northeast Ohio
Hawks Nest remains one of my favorite golf courses in Ohio. I've been playing it for more than a decade, and it's only been getting better as the years go by. Conditions are excellent for the price, and the price is very reasonable during peak hours. The greens were in excellent shape and rolled true. Bunkers also were in good condition. They are redoing the fairway bunker on number 7, which will make that difficult hole even harder.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. I appreciated that fact when I was able to recover my coffee mug that fell out of the cart on the first hole.
I will be back a couple of more times before the end of the season.
Astorhurst Country Club
Played On 6/2/2013Getting better
I've played this course off-and-on for the last 12 years, and it's clear the owners are trying to make things better. Drainage appears to be much better, and the greens were in excellent shape. New golf carts help, too. There's still work to be done though, as some of the tee boxes were torn up. I'm not convinced the yardage markers are right, either. Still, it's a fun little course with some interesting shots (no. 8 and 18 tee shots, for example) and one of the scariest par 3s I've ever played (no. 13).
jwniehaus - Thank you for the awesome five star review! We are glad you are able to notice the improvements we are continuing to make on our course and hope it will continue to get better and better. Also, thank you for noting how well our staff is doing. It's always good to be able to share this information along with them.
