Schaumburg Golf Club - Tournament/Baer Course
Played On 05/01/2020Redesign is interesting but needs some grow in
Really impressed with the redesign but need to see it a bit more grown in. Very soft and rain didn’t help. Looking forward to returning in firm conditions.
Madison Green Country Club
Played On 12/27/2018Play it before it’s gone - or don’t
Madison Green was until recently one of the premier public facilities in PB County. Unfortunately it’s no longer even a shell of its former self. Although the scruffy but firm conditions are actually fun for the “firm and fast” aficionado, the staff’s general incompetence combined with a very much related snail-like pace of play make the place impossible to enjoy.
Pricing has gone down dramatically in recent years, causing high handicapper casual players with no business playing this challenging of a layout to flock to the course and bring it to a halt.
From the first tee, the general lack of concern for the customer experience is apparent with the starter teetering from incapable to non existent, causing a backup of five groups just between the clubhouse and the first tee. The thirty minute first hole is followed by a longer second and things don’t improve from there.
At the prices they are charging, I doubt this place lasts more than another year or two. It’s unfortunatelt since this is a really good Hurdzden Fry track in an area gradually being stripped of every good public option.
Chevy Chase Country Club
Played On 08/16/2016Course Conditions Have Gone Downhill
Hadn't played this course in several years despite living down the street thanks to what I feel are greens fees in excess of what the course is worth and a pace of play that can sometimes be annoying.
Today I snagged a golf now deal and decided to give it a try. When I used to play here often, I thought the post-renovation layout was great and the greens played firm, fast, and true. This time, the course was overgrown, soft (more than it should have been even with a bit of rain) and the greens were SLOW, BUMPY, and far from true.
As some have noted, it seems no one who plays here fixes ball marks or has any clue how to walk on a green without dragging spikes all over the place.
It is a shame this course cannot stay in good condition and it is surprising given the price they are getting. I will not be coming back any time soon.
North Palm Beach Country Club
Played On 12/21/2015Great Redesign, Need a walking rate
I am not a big fan of Nicklaus designs but I really enjoyed what he did with NPBCC. Course remains walkable and unique, taking advantage of the ridge that always gave the course it's character. Green speed were a bit inconsistent but overall conditioning was great and pace of play was even better.
My only gripe is that they charged full cart price even for walkers. $53 to walk on a Monday afternoon is a good price for the course, but with a mandatory $26.50 cart fee charged even if you walk the course, the $79.50 is a bit steep. Given that this is one of the few walkable designs in the area, it would seem to make a lot of sense to have a walking rate (which they apparently do but refuse to give out as the receipt split the GF into a $53 charge for midday GF and $26.50 for a cart we didn't use) at least on weekdays/afternoons.
Shepherd's Crook Golf Course
Played On 10/02/2015Aeration Everywhere
Love this course but have no idea what they are doing there. Greens were fine and not punched but rough areas everywhere were punched. Too often that led to balls lying in holes and/or being surrounded by dirt clumps. Impossible to play, particularly around the greens
Banyan Cay Resort & Golf
Played On 12/28/2014great track that need investment
renovated layout is great, expansive fairways with nice angles and interesting green complexes. Greens were in horrible shape and need a lot of attention. Pace of play was horrible as well and no rangers in sight.
The Champions Club at Summerfield
Played On 12/23/2014Great value interesting design
Second time playing the course and totally changed my opinion. Hated my first experience but this time the pace was outstanding and the layout was really enjoyable for the price.
As is common for courses of this type, there is way too much water being applied to fairways, particularly around the greens. Layout would benefit from drying out and allowing for run up shots
Mission Hills Club
Played On 04/17/2014Weird routing. Some decent holes
Could be and probably was a decent track. But a terrible routing and substandard conditions make it hard to believe this is a private club. Early season may have had something to do with it but routing doesn't get affected by weather
Plum Tree National Golf Club
Played On 8/24/2013Nearly a disaster, course made up for it
After driving over an hour to play, the last thing I wanted to do was wait an extra 40 minutes before teeing off. Unfortunately, the understaffed course had an outing running (shotgun) nearly an hour late and wouldnt let any one of the three or four groups with tee times out until nearly 45 minutes after they had scheduled times. Fortunately the course was largely empty as a result otherwise this would have put 18 holes in serious jeopardy with the sun going down earlier in late August. Pro shop tried to be nice with a free bag of range balls but kept telling us "5 more minutes" for more than 45. In reality, should have gotten a refund for not getting out even close to our 334 tee time
Deerfield Golf Club
Played On 6/7/2013Average course normally overpriced
Never understood how Deerfield got away with charging what it does. Not a bad course but nothing to write home about
