Early March Round

Riverbend is a good public course and route where you can be assured the pace will move along and the greens will be consistent. This weeks round was no different. Despite being our wet time of year. The course was very playable. A few bunkers had standing water but for the most port they drained well. Greens were spongy to receiver irons, but still rolled well.

Only complaint was no food/drink/window etc r restaurant. Just. A sign in the door - Closed. Would have loved to have a beer at the turn on the fist sunny day in a while.

Always Enjoyable at The Bend

I play Riverbend every year and always leave the round enjoying the variation of shots, lengths and typically feel the course is fair and very playable. Greens were great, consistent speed. The bunkers were also well kept- better than last year about the same time when they were a little thin and burnt out.

A new era, a new owner, a long ways to go

I have always enjoyed Gleneagle. Not long, but requires you to strike it well or it bites you quickly. Traditionally the greens and conditions were some of the best in Snohomish county. I hadn’t been up here since 2019 and was kind of shocked to see the conditions. The very nice man who checked me in disclosed they were the new owners and they were working through getting it back - but until I got on the course I hadn’t realized how far it had fallen.

The greens are always the star of this track - and they had been punched two weeks ago so rolled a bit bumpy but but were fine. The bunkers and off fairways were a different story. Weeds and essentially neglect is the best way to describe probably 70% of the bunkers - I finally just dropped out of one when it had more tumble weeds and scruff then a homeless Oklahoman.

The fairways were ok, narrower and inconsistent in mower height, but generally fine - but off the fairway was cooked, burnt, dead grass. Lies we’re uneven, it was almost clay like at points. We have had a dry summer and fall - but there is still sprinklers, somewhere, right? Hard to look at a cooked parkland course - harder to play it and watch the ball bound into peoples yards.

The place Needs irrigation, needs more ground crew (a couple were driving up and fertilizing mid day) , need someone to just go out and trim blackberrys from around trees, pick up downed trees (they’ve done some clearing which was nice but the dead trucks and leftovers were displayed all over the place. I remember it being pretty clean and fun - short but good golf. The range was pretty bad - mats and balls really run down.

Yesterdays round leaned toward dog track - even though I know for $27 what should I expect, but it still stinks cause I know the new owners care and are trying. And I always enjoyed Gleneagle but I won’t be back for rest of this year. I will be rooting for them to find some more staff, and Maybe some natural rain and a winter without major flooding will help this place bounce back. The renovations to the clubhouse, restaurant and bar scream high end. I wish the course matched that. Once it does, this will once again become a go to public course where you can enjoy a round, then have drinks and great food - an every man’s country club feel like it once had.

I will say pace of play was outstanding as we finished in less than three hours. The carts were nice and new. The tee boxes weren’t bad. You have to squint to see it, but I believe Gleneagle is on the way back.

NIle has some great holes

I have played Nile 20 years. Always enjoy the quirky starting uber short par 4s - but narrow with trouble- the couple of really tough but good and fair golf holes and the overall solid conditions and greens. IT never is a let down - good and close to Seattle - no houses or anything to deal with aside from golf. It was playing firm yesterday and #3 (wish you could FEEL the lake more from the tee - probably not allowed to limb that up to show off the water) is a BEAR when you cant stop the drive from outrunning the dogleg. The 6th hole is also a GREAT short par 3 - to a green that needs to be approached from the front. #8 is a great hole, #12 is a beast. #15 - 17 is a nice, NW routing that rewards well played, conservative shots. But begs you to hit driver and see what you can score.

For the value, location and the FUN round, Nile is tough to beat.

White Horse just keeps getting better

I make the early September trip to White horse every year to roll the best Public greens in the state and yesterday was no exception. PURE is the best description. They are fast, but fair. Read and roll as intended. The whole course was in PERFECT condition, with the misses being punished and the good shots rewarded. Rough was gnarly if you really miss in a bad spot (hello left half of 10 - next time just cut a 4 iron off that tee) but playable if the ball bounds just into it. Only had 2 bunker shots, but those were consistent and well maintained. 4 sets of tees allowed me to play the BLUES while my playing partners had a LOT more fun from the WHITES. Service was outstanding; We ordered lunch to go and told the bar tender we had a Ferry to catch. He looked at the clock then even searched the FERRY waiting list to assure we had time and would make our intended boat. This has to be played by every Washington GOLFER to appreciate how well the course has grown up. When first opened, it was so firm and tricked out - just balls bounding into bushes. The last 10 years though, the vision and approach to the course and grounds keeping has turned this into a TOP 5 public course in the state of WA. It is tough - the shorter the hole, the smaller the landing areas. All the par threes are pretty and I hit every single club in my bag -- on the front nine alone! ( holes, 9 different irons (or 3 wood on 9 from 210 out - what a hole!) I have played them all and put Whitehorse right along side Gold Mountain Olympic, Salish Cliffs, Wine Valley and Chambers. In some ways, it exceeds those because the Ferry ride builds anticipation and sets up a scenic start and end to the whole round make you feel like you've got nothing but a GOLF COURSE to explore - but then you are right back in town after a 25 minute ferry crossing. Count me in every FALL for my ride on the White HORSE.

Foster is Fun

Great shorter course with tremendous green conditions. Every green is the same speed, all roll well, some have really a lot of undulations, while others are flat. Pace of play was slower than I would like - but the layout with a drivable par four 8th followed by a short par three ninth tends to do that. Back nine pace is always better. No range, but I like the hitting stalls just beyond the first tee so at least you can swing some and get loose. Then it looks EASY on the card to start, but dont be fooled: The 300-320 yard parallel par fours #1-4 are good holes, require a straight tee shot and an accurate approach or you can be staring at crooked numbers on a low rated course. #6 is a monster of a par four with 2 really good shots needed to sniff par. The back is more fun with reachable par fives, 2 par threes over the river and two more drivable par fours - each with their own set of issues - a large willow tree guarding the front of 14 and a 90 degree dog leg giving 15 all you can handle. #17 is another monster PAr 3 before a pretty trickly short 18th. I have always enjoyed my yearly round at Foster - This year for the first time in many, there was an horrific odor down by the river that can only be described as fertilizer gone bad - or hot vomit. It was gross and freaked out my 11 year son playing partner. It is the only thing I can say bad about the place. Only really felt it on 4 tee, 6 green, 12 tee. But man - it stunk.

So good

It had been over 15 years since I last prospector. It exceeded my memory as a great ‘Northwest inspired’ track. The greens were perfect, fairways and Blvd jers too. Fun layout, I hit every club in my bag. The tenth tee shot vista is second to none. Great staff, friendly starter, not a complaint to be found.

Classic country club you can play and it is So good

I have heard about this golf course for years. Happened to be in the area doing business in Puyallup and played in the morning. From the opening tee shot you realize that this should still be a country club. Treelined fairways, a great route, have to work the ball both ways into the green complexes, fantastically well kept conditions, and the greens are top notch. For a public course and the price - I can’t imagine a better combination. The staff were great. The type of place I could play everyday if I didn’t live sixty miles away. Five stars for everything.

Always Fun at Nile but don't be fooled!

Looking at the scorecard it is easy to dismiss this golf course. Back to back driveable par fours to start? 5 par 3's? Nothing over 400 yards all day.....but Nile makes up for it with a good layout, well kept and speedy Greens and enough trouble to derail the off course shot. It can be overpowered (long hitters can hit 3 woods into 3 par fours) but being too long in spots can bite you if your bomb goes a little off course. The 3rd hole is a heck of a par 4. Dog legs off the tee, with hazards right and OB left. You have to play about a 210 yard draw, followed by a 170 yard second that has to come in high, but is guarded by trees left. The green plays slightly longer than the distance. #5 is another dog leg that if you go 210 your perfect...but 220 off the tee will careen and land you in the hazard as the hill rolls away. #6 requires a good high cut then a short approach to a green that runs away from you. After a three club length green par three (seriously, anyone ever get it all the way back here?) with an entry road full of on lookers left and pine trees tightening any stray, you get the one BIG BOY DRIVER HOLE #8. You can let it rip and you better....there is a creek that fronts the green and eats Pro v1s for lunch. The 10-11-12 stretch links shorter par fours to tricky greens. Approach shots are usually with 9-PW-GW on 10 and 11, with about a 7 iron into 12. The green on #12 in particular is long and narrow, with extreme fall off to each side and a severe false front and a ridge half way. If you can make 3's on the short par fours, save those up to spend on the 6's and 7's this hole can put on your card. #16 is another, slight right to left dogleg with trouble in the approach shots way at about 225 off the tee. #17 is a shorter hole but the green has extremely sloped from right to left and back to front....don't go long. The day Ends with a tough, uphill 165 yard par three to a diabolical putting surface. . At the end of every round at Nile I stand on that green and gaze at the course and think.....this little puppy kicked my butt again. Hit is 220 with a slgiht draw all day and control 50-110 yard approach shots to under the hole and you can eat this place up. The rest of us, be ready to be humbled a bit at the Nile.

Can’t beat the price

I love how cheap this place is because there are gonna be multiple times you shake your head and then say, well it’s only $14 bucks with a cart. The routing is better on the back nine. Front nine has some goofy angles, especially from the back tees., with trees in the way off the tee shot, a bench and tee out in front ona long par four and then a force carry par five to end the side, as the green is then bordered by rock hard sand traps where putter is the proper play. I wish they could plug and sand the collars because They are concrete Firm and borderline unfair. Just behind every single green lies trouble that is hard to stop a ball on without the help of friction. you almost have to play it like a links style, bump and run, which is odd for a tree lined river side track. A long shot= a lost ball. The tee boxes are terrible, bad angles and usually dirt not turf. The fairways are shaggy, like the mower isn’t used on GolfNow discount days....there is no consistency with the rough. The Greens run ok, a bit bumpy but they read true. None are crazy in slope. #11 is a tremendous long par four to a tough front to back green. #13 and #14 are back to back par fives and good ones. Long and require three good shots. #17 is a monster par three. I wish the first 6 holes weren’t just kind of a dried out dog track because the back nine actually feels like golf. And by that time, you’ve spent your whole $14 and why not, a day golfing is still better than a day doing something else.
