Incredibly unprofessional staff

I’ve played this course probably 30 times and each time I’ve taken my son out with me with no issues. Today, however, I was informed that I would be subject to a $20 riders fee for him despite never being charged this before. When I informed the staff I’ve never been charged that I was told I was lying by the pro shop employee and that he had never seen me before. I played here twice in this past week, both times interacting with that exact employee, and had no issues.

The fact that I have played this course numerous times and they still don’t recognize return customers is disappointing. Further, to be called a liar by a golf course employee is even more disrespectful. I can’t encourage customers to avoid playing here enough. Absolutely disgusting behavior by their employees.

This is one of my most frequent courses, other than Rockwood, and it seems to b a pretty good value, but it is frustrating to hear that. I've had my kids out there as well with no problems. I had the same issue at Champions Circle about a month ago where they wanted to charge my 5 year old a $30 rider fee when there was a wide open tee sheet. Guess they didn't want my green fee either.

They do not honor GolfNow pricing.

The course is great. Solid layout, excellent routing and challenging where it needs to be. The course will be in great shape come Spring once the grass has finally grown in.

My only qualms stem from the fact that the course does not honor GolfNow pricing. It was booked for $47 a player on golfnow but the course charged $55 per player in the shop even after I pushed back on the GolfNow listed price. In addition, the pro shop informed me that they charge a convenience fee of their own for golfnow reservations in addition to the fee that GolfNow has built into their model.

The course also enters everyone (for a fee) into their hole-in-one contest and will not allow you to opt out as it is “built into the price of the green fee.” This all took place after the fact that the pro shop didn’t open until 20 minutes AFTER my tee time had already passed. These separate fees were not listed on the online reservation and this lack of integrity is 100% on Tempest and not GolfNow.

This is a horrid business model and the course refuses to honor their published pricing commitments. It left a really bad taste in my mouth and I would definitely recommend Pine Dunes in Frankston over this course because it is simply better and they don’t treat their customers as poorly as Tempest.

This course is NOT run like the other Jeff Brauer designs (Cowboys, Biwabik, etc.) where the customer always comes first and they receive a first class experience. Buyer beware.

Probably the Besr Course I’ve Ever Played

This course is absolutely phenomenal. I’d place it ahead of Kiawah Ocean as the best course I’ve ever played. There is absolutely nothing missing from this course; it has it all. From incredibly intriguing green complexes, a perfect routing that creates interesting crosswinds to top-notch course conditions this course has it all. The practice facility was easily the best I’ve ever seen.

For a course that is of the minimalist ilk Erin Hills got every single detail correct. There isn’t a tee shot or approach shot that doesn’t immediately grab your interest as it is a textbook example of a course that must be managed correctly to score.

The biggest advice I have is to select a tee box that suits your driving distance. I played one or two tee boxes too far up and I found myself with some incredibly awkward angles (which weren’t by design) if I hit driver as the holes began to narrow. I also missed out on some speed slots built into fairways because I was simply carrying the ball over them. Don’t be afraid to tee it back here as you’ll be immediately presented with some difficult, yet rewarding, tee shot criteria you must meet.

I’ve seen others say the par 3s out here are some blah compared to the rest of the course and I couldn’t disagree more. There was a great mix of distances and required shot shapes as each par 3 was loaded with unpinnable surfaces that created unique folds in the greens that had to be navigated.

Whether off the tee or around the greens this course never took a club out of your hand it featured zero forces carries. Absolutely textbook architecture all the way around here.

You should just burn your $275 instead

Talk about a colossal disappointment. Wow. I’ve previously rated this course as a 5-star but this place has turned into a bottom dweller. These greens are the worst I have ever played. They are closing the course in October to replace all the greens but that does not mean you stop caring for the current ones when you’re charging $275 to play this dump. Awesome routing. Dumpster fire conditions. Horrible value.

Phenomenal Routing with Hit or Miss Conditions

The routing of this course is phenomenal and the stretch of holes 4-7 is one of the top 5 best stretches I have played all year. The architectural team did wonders on this property but the conditioning was somewhat subpar. Numerous bunkers were completely unplayable with giant holes in them and ledges of where I presume water had washed them out. There didn't appear to be any effort whatsoever to address this.

The elevation changes off the tee box onto some of these fairways made this course a real treat. Because of steep drops you've got to adjust your carry distance with the driver and lines you don't think are possible can be pulled off. Conversely, hazards and/or native area that looks to be way out of reach can be flown with the right wind and the right elevation drop-off from tee box to fairway. It's a good course and if I am in the area then I'd certainly come back. Is it #2 in Kansas? Maybe. I haven't seen many of the courses here. That said, this isn't even a top 50 in state course anywhere on the West Coast, Southeast, Northeast, Atlantic or midwest. However, it's relatively affordable and what appeared to be the best option within a 100-mile radius.

Phenomenal Venue

This course is 5-star across the board. The layout is incredibly well done and although it was definitely a hike I would highly encourage folks to walk this course. This course features some incredibly dramatic elevation changes and by walking this course you are able to truly appreciate how intricate yet overpowering the landscape the architects had to be.

A lot of dirt had to be moved simply to clear out enough space for this course but there course does a tremendous job of bending into the natural terrain. This is easily the best desert course I have played (which includes TPC Scottsdale and all the top PGA West Courses).

Super friendly and attentive staff, top-notch conditions and an all-around great experience. No hole even came close to resembling another and there isn't a single hole out here that wasn't architecturally interesting. If I lived in SoCal I would become a member here and never play another course.

Very easy to see why this course was once rated in GDs Top 100 and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find 100 other public courses across the country that can compete with Maderas.

Good But Not Spectacular

This course was a pretty decent value for $40 and an end-of-day try to sneak in 18 type course. The course features some decent elevation change but the conditions were too varied from hole-to-hole for me to give this 5 stars. I would certainly play it again, especially for $40, but the course wasn't overwhelmingly inspiring. If you transplanted this course from SoCal into another area I might rate it higher but this course is simply being graded on a curve compared to others in the area and I wouldn't even put this in the Top 10.

Outstanding Value

I was pleasantly surprised by this course out west of Fort Worth. The distance away from everything makes this course a hidden gem as most of the Dallas crowd doesn't come out this far. In addition to a smaller tee sheet, $57 for a Sunday morning is a steal.

This course is old. Like, very old. I think it makes this course charming but others I know aren't a big fan because technology has removed a lot of the bite out of this course. Granted, even from the tips I don't think I hit anything longer than a PW into a par 4 but the par 3s at least held their own out here.

This course is likely a course for the 10+ handicappers as it was very easy to navigate. A scratch golfer who is low on confidence might also benefit from making the trip out, as well.

Cool course, quick pace and phenomenal conditions. Would definitely come back.

Premium Municipal Golf

This course belongs in the premium but not quite elite category for municipal courses. It's not at the level of Chambers or Bethpage but you'd be very hard-pressed to find a more thoughtful municipal layout...especially in a parkland setting.

The land given to Doak was average, at best, but his design ability truly came out in creating a great course with an uninteresting parcel of land.

You better bring your A+ approach game (like with every Doak) because if you miss a green an up and down is incredibly difficult.

Also like with other Doak courses get your birdies in early because the stretch of 12-17 is a kick to the stomach of tough golf hole followed by rough golf hole to include 3x 220+ yard par 3 holes and 2x 475+ yard par 4s.

Really great design and some cool offerings via their caddie program ($10-20 tip all that's required). I'd certainly come back to play this again.

Sneaky Good

This is not a course you'll find on GolfNow but it's definitely a gem. This course hosted the US Amateur about a decade ago and it didn't take long to realize why.

This course does a great job of blending a solid layout/routing with superb conditions. The mowing lines and general presentation from tee-to-green was top notch.

I played with some locals who said the greens were stimping an additional +2 in preparation for the club championship this weekend and the condition really brought the teeth out.

While the fairways aren't crazy wide there is a little width and with firmer greens there were flags that you had no chance at going after if you were coming in from the 3 inch rough or the wrong side of the fairway. If this course softens up I would be less interested but at this time of year in these conditions this course is a solid 5.

Superintendent: Keep the greens firm and you've got yourself a solid track on your hands. Especially considering this is a muni and very fairly priced. Let them soften up some and you remove the penalty for a drive in the rough.

Pleasant Surprise

I didn’t expect to love this course but it’s actually a pretty great track. Fazio has a tendency to drastically overpower land while moving loads and loads of earth to force his routing on a piece of land....that was not the case here. Fazio did a splendid job of working with the land and weaving his routing in and out of natural desert mounding and dunes.

This course does a phenomenal job of blending in short par 4s with absolute brutes, as well. I pulled 2I as many times as I pulled driver today and he does a great job of inviting the player to take challenging and aggressive lines off the tee. The conditioning was superb.

Easily the best course within a 400 mile radius in the non-Lajitas category. It’s a seemingly random spot for a Fazio (aka non resort) and because the course is owned by the airport you can get some awesome pricing for a Top-5ish in Texas public course.

Better Practice Your Irons Before the Round

The best putter in your foursome will likely favor the Black course while the precision driver will like the Red and the precision iron player will like the Blue.

This is probably Tom Doak’s best design. While Pac Dunes gets a lot of fanfare and is a phenomenal course I think much of the hype around it is driven by ocean views. The Blue Course is a great piece of land but Doak is absolutely on his A game at Blue. Personally, this was my favorite course of them all because Doak gives you plenty of room on the tee and then ratchets up the difficulty on your second shot.

Unlike the Red where your goal is simply to find the fairway off the tee finding the fairway off the Blue is fairly easily done. That said, there is ALWAYS a correct side of the fairway to be on at Blue and which side you want to be on changes day-to-day depending on the pin location.

All of these courses are great but this was my favorite. I hate people that drop all the courses they've ever played but I'd probably rank the elite/new design courses I've played as:
1. Blue
2. Red
3. Pacific Dunes
4. Kiawah Ocean
5. Chambers

Better Hope Your Driver Came to Play

The best putter in your foursome will likely favor the Black course while the precision driver will like the Red and the precision iron player will like the Blue.

This course off the tee is an absolute test of someone’s ability to keep the ball in play while hitting all 9 golf shots (draw, straight, fade and then high/normal/low for each). If you find the fairway off the tee then this course becomes much more manageable as Coore and Crenshaw leave a bailout option on every green (or at least near it). Such options do not exist off the tee. Pick a line you can make and then commit and execute off the tee.

This course is a phenomenal blend of architecture with birdie holes followed directly by absolute gut punches in the routing. Further, the back 9 is something like 600-700 yards longer than the front so get your birdies early and then hang on.

Tip: if you aren’t taking a caddie then bring a range finder because bunkers that look in play are easily carryable and those that appear out of reach can easily be found with a driver kicking off a downslope and then funneling into bunkers.

Not an “Additional Course”

While the Red and the Blue receive rave reviews because they’ve been open longer, the Black course more than holds it own compared to its counterparts. You need to be prepared for absolutely wild greens that require precise iron shots or your ball can easily be ejected off of greens if you don’t appreciate the width and angles components of golf course architecture.

The best putter in your foursome will likely favor the Black course while the precision driver will like the Red and the precision iron player will like the Blue. The first five holes or so I didn’t think the course was that difficult because I was playing to the correct parts of the green and left with flat or slightly uphill putts. The second an iron shot went off line I met the wrath of Gil Hanse and Streamsong Black.

Tip: the practice putting green is the flattest out there and not at all indicative of the course. Go practice putting on the putting course to truly appreciate what you’ll be up against.

Elite Course

This course is a tribute to others around the world but unlike other courses that attempt this (and fail miserably in resembling conditions) this course was perfect. The greens here are in the running for best in DFW in terms of condition, speed, color and undulation.

While these holes aren’t “original” to the architect the execution in building this course and matching the conditioning was a slam-dunk. This course is a great piece of art and I’ve yet to play this course in the same wind direction/speed. Something as simple as the routing of this course makes it play substantially different day-to-day which is very reminiscent to a true Scottish links course.

World Class Course That’s Ever so Slightly Over-Priced

The course is phenomenal, there’s no denying that. I’ve seen other reviews claim this course is incredibly difficult but aside from a par 5 on the back I didn’t feel like this course was terribly difficult. The big key here is playing the right tee and paying attention to slope and rating.

I got to play this course in a tournament for $140 which is probably what it should cost. I don’t think this is a $200 course but could see 125-150. Your food/drinks (non alcohol) is included so if you get there at 12 and have lunch, hit balls and then dinner the price tag isn’t nearly as severe as it looks. Cowboys isn’t just about golf....this course is about the entire experience. Coming out and sneaking in 18 as fast as you can is not how you should play this course. While I hate slow golf rounds I truly think Cowboys is 100% about the experience and making a day of it. If you golf 20+ rounds a year I think Cowboys needs to be at least one of those rounds you play.

This would be an amazing place to take clients or even a wife/girlfriend as everything here is truly first class.

The course, itself: phenomenal. Great routing, great use of natural features and amazing conditions all-around.

Probably the most architecturally sound course in DFW

Played this course during a work scramble and all I can say is wow. This course, architecturally, is a real delight. The greens are lightning quick which places a premium on not only avoiding the short side but makes taking on pins when you’re on the wrong side of the fairway dang near impossible. Whenever the flag is up front you MUST run the ball in if you want to be within 30 feet of the flag.

When the pin is in the back you need to flight in some lower shots that hop-skip-stop to be near the pin. Landing pin high to a back flag results in an immediate ejection off the back of the green. If you take on the hazard from the tee (whether water, bunker or fescue) you’re rewarded with a shorter distance, great angle or an uphill approach shot that makes stopping the ball much easier. If you shy away from the hazard and take the bailout (which the layout gives you every hole) then do not expect to have an easy second shot.

Birdies require two good shots while pars are easy-ish to make. Bogey comes into play when you try to make birdie and don’t execute. Absolutely textbook architecture.

Pleasantly Surprised

Snuck out to this course when a friend mentioned it to me. You won’t find it on GolfNow or really any advertisements. It’s a nice hidden gem. I hit literally every club on my bag today on this course and pulled 2I just as many times as I hit driver. This course is a total ballstrikers paradise and is a nice change from the bomb and gouge tracks that are littered across Texas. Some bald spots on the outer lying edges of greens but they were in otherwise phenomenal condition.

Would definitely come back out and play as this course was a great architectural achievement with the intertwined pine trees and lake views. Really nice track.

Somewhat disappointing

I was incredibly hyped to play this course while in town but was somewhat let down. Aside from very intriguing green complexes and a solid closing nine this course isn’t exactly inspiring. That’s a huge testament to the broadcast crews for the WM as they make this course look incredibly more intriguing than it is. I’m not saying it’s a bad course, but I think it’s certainly over-hyped. This is a come play it once to say you did course but that’s about it. Granted, I played in their off season. I tend to use a barometer of “could I be a member here and only play this course” when evaluating golf courses and when it came to TPC Stadium that answer was a no in my eyes. Phoenix has much better options to play in the area.
