About
Four years in, and I'm starting to learn the basics. I have an average swing speed for an amateur, so only drive about 200 yds, +/- 15 yds. The key is, I was fit by a fitting pro who told me what to look for in a driver, and that has improved my game immensely.
I believe putting is my strength.
Chipping/ short game in general is getting better since someone told me about Dave Pelz' Short Game Bible.

Played On 03/09/2022Nice time
Course in good condition considering all the rain we've had. A few temporary greens were disappointing, but I understand the need to preserve the course. I'd go back again.
SkyRidge Golf Course
Played On 04/04/2019Hidden links style gem
Had a great time here. I live only a few miles away, on Whidbey, but the climate change is significant. SkyRidge was in great shape, level tee boxes, firm fairways, appropriate depth rough, very firm greens. The course is very well marked, so routing isn't an issue. There was even drinking water, which is not usual for this time of year in the Pacific NW (but should be), and a freshly serviced HoneyBucket. There was water in all the ball cleaners I used. There were just so many little things that some courses ignore/neglect, that the staff here get right. The owner took time to explain the layout to me before I went out, he and the rest of the staff in the bar/kitchen were very welcoming, as were other regular patrons. Can't say enough good things about SkyRidge. If I lived closer, I'd play here a lot, most likely become a member.
Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course
Played On 09/01/2018Best course I've played.
Holes 13 and 14 gave me the impression I was playing conditions similar to what the pros face at Pebble Beach - Pacific Ocean to the right, with winds coming off shore. Beautiful course, challenging elevation changes
Gleneagle Golf Course
Played On 03/18/2018Perfect greens, slow pace
I don't know if there was just one really slow group in front of the group in front of me, or what, but for the first 6 holes, it was a 5 minute wait for every shot. At the turn, neither of the 2 groups in front of me when I started was visible. I think they must have both passed the group that I was following by the time I got to nine. That group didn't go on, and the rest of the round was fantastic.
Some of the fairways had muddy tracks where either some fool tried to take a cart, or else the mower got stuck in the soggy conditions. Other fairways were almost up to prime condition.
Sage Hills Golf Resort
Played On 08/16/2016Fun fair course, very well maintained
I walked 9, and then rode 27. They had a great deal, play all day for $20 after 10 AM in August. The heat made walking more than 9 not an option (>90*).
If you miss the fairway, the course doesn't overly punish you, the greens are true, great speed, many are relatively flat, but there are a few where you really have to play the slopes. All in all I highly recommend this course.
Gateway Golf Course
Played On 06/13/2015On the upswing
I've played this course two more times since my original review. The owner has done a lot to make it better, and I now recommend it. The greens SO much better, they will soon be on par with more established courses.
The course is better marked now, and at this time of year, casual water is not an issue.
I talked with the owner, and he told me he has recently found the drain lines, and can now work on getting them unplugged, which will help when the rains come back, but you should definitely try it before October.
I do wish the tee boxes were more defined/level, but I can also see that he has been addressing the most critical issues first, and doing a good job.
Heritage Park Golf Course
Played On 12/28/2014A pleasure to play in winter
The rough was perfect for giving you something to overcome without being too punishing for a wayward shot. Liked all the water features (only got my ball wet once). Staff was very welcoming. The rental clubs were reasonably priced, and pretty decent compared to what some places have available. Wide fairways, great markings for navigating the course. Hope I can come back when it's warm out, and I don't have to go up 2 clubs and play the forward tees, but it was fun to play with temps in the 30's, and bright sunshine.
Huron Hills Golf Course
Played On 10/12/2014Fun course, very firm greens
Really enjoyed playing here, and looking forward to doing so again. I didn't expect elevation changes to be a feature in Michigan, compared to our Washington courses - pleasantly surprised. Also loved that water hazards weren't a significant issue.
Kayak Point Golf Course
Played On 09/04/2014incredible greens, serene environs
Best greens I've played, firm, but not overly fast, roll true if you read it right. Loved playing in the forest, quiet and aromatic cedar surrounds you. Lots of elevation changes make the holes dramatic, but a lot of work if you walk - I recommend a cart if you're not in shape.
Holmes Harbor Golf Club
Played On 08/27/2014Very good, and improving steadily
I first played this course shortly after it was re-opened. It was also a different time of year, but the course is in much better shape now, including the greens, which still aren't perfect, but are WAY improved. The owner, and I assume his daughter, were working on bunkers when I was there, which she said at the beginning of the round were considered ground under repair.
The views are spectacular, the course has nice challenges without being terribly difficult, and the price is reasonable.
I think the club house is undergoing renovation too, since my check-in was handled at a temporary trailer, instead of the building, as it was last time.
Whidbey Golf Club
Played On 07/04/2014Very well maintained, challenging without being frustrating
Really like how well the grounds are maintained. If you miss the fairway, you'll still be able to find your ball. Multiple sets of tees lets you pick a place that suits your ability (I chose the gold, with a slope of 115 vs. the white with a slope of 121).
Gallery Golf Course
Played On 05/30/2014really enjoy my home course
This is the course I play on most, so I know it pretty well, it can be challenging on a couple of holes, esp. 13, where you can't see the green from the tee. Don't hit into woods, or you'll never find your ball.
Kenwanda Golf Course
Played On 05/15/2014well maintained fairways and rough
It's hard to lose a ball on this course, which for me is a good thing. Even if you hook or slice, you can still find it, because the rough is kept short. That said, you might hit trees if you don't keep it very straight. A few blind spots, where you have to trust your yardages, because you can't see the green. Great tips on the score card for each hole.
Gleneagle Golf Course
Played On 05/01/2014Superb greens
Really enjoyed this course, was glad I was paired with someone who had played here before, so I got some tips about how to play it. It is a long walk, so a cart would not have been a bad idea.
Swinomish Golf Links
Played On 03/22/2014Wide open fairways
Very enjoyable round. A couple of fairways were rather wet, but that's to be expected at the start of Spring. Climbing to the green at 16 always gets me huffin' and puffin', glad I was pushing a cart instead of carrying my clubs.
Camaloch Golf Club
Played On 03/18/2014enjoyable course, weather wasn't what I had expected
I have to start by saying that I'm new to golf, and don't usually go if it's not also going to be a beautiful day, so I was a little disappointed in the forecast being wrong, and it started drizzling about 10 minutes before my round began. Having the cart to keep the rain off was nice, but playing with my jacket on, to stay dry while swinging was a hindrance. That's Spring golf in Washington. The fairways were soggy in a couple of places for the same reason.
Overall, very well maintained course, and friendly staff, I can't wait to try it in a month or two, and hope the grill is open by then too. Great value, and I would definitely recommend Camaloch.
Gateway Golf Course
Played On 02/21/2014Better to try in summer, I think
There was no staff, no directions to the next tee, nor flags in the holes on the greens. I didn't walk the course, I waded it.
Swinomish Golf Links
Played On 10/16/2013Wide open fairways
Good for those still working on a hook or slice because the fairways are very wide.
