Stonewall Golf Club at Lake Manassas
Played On 09/22/2020Stonewall...Worth the Drive
I had not played Stonewall Golf Club in over ten years. I was greatly surprised by the number of houses around the course...none of which affect play. The course is a challenge. It requires accuracy and a knowledge of where to hit your ball. The greens were firm and fast. They have subtle breaks that did not always reflect the inclination of the surrounding area. They did not always break toward the water. I look forward to playing there again. It's worth the drive.
Potomac Shores Golf Club
Played On 05/24/2020Great Improvement
Potomac Shores has improved since my last visit (2018). It is definitely not a course for a walkers. The new re-routing makes for some long spaces between some holes. However, it is nice to finish on what was Hole #3; unless you don't like to hit your approach over a wide gully
The fairways and greens have improved and should get better when the weather warms up. Their was a beverage cart out with snacks and food. I will play there again...soon.

Old Hickory Golf Club
Played On 03/04/2020Great Course
I though Old Hickory was in excellent shape for this time of the year. The Greens were fine, slightly slower than usual. The Fairways were great and the grass was growing and green. I am looking forward to playing again in the near future.
Augustine Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2019Improving Conditions
Augustine has recently received some low reviews. However today, I could see vast improvement. The Tees definitely need work; but the condition did not affect play. The greens were in great shape. The fairways will probably be in great shape in a few weeks. It was worth the trip down I-95.
Mattaponi Springs Golf Club
Played On 10/18/2018Best Value in Northern Virginia
I don't know how they did it; but this course was in outstanding condition. The ball sat up in the fairways, bunkers were maintained and greens putted wonderfully. Other courses in the area could not compare. Easily the best-maintained public course I've played this year. Well worth the trip down to Ruether Glen.
Fort Belvoir Golf Club - Gunston Course
Played On 09/05/2017Updated Review
Gunston Course has been redone since I first reviewed it. It went from a difficult outstanding course (par 72) to a short, not too difficult course (Par 70). The fairways are not in good shape. The greens are very slow. Hopefully, it will be in better shape next season.
Ford's Colony Country Club - Blackheath Course
Played On 04/28/2017Ford's Colony Blue Herron
Had a great time playing Blue Herron. The greens were in great shape. Very smooth with moderate speed. The Bermuda fairways are just starting to grow in; so some spots were excellent and others...not so good. The Fairways were moist; so there was not a lot of roll. I would definitely play this course again.
The Currituck Club
Played On 09/20/2015Great resort course
Played in a strong wind, making this an extremely difficult time. However the course was still fun to play and with Golf Now price, an extremely good experience. I have played this course on each visit to OBX and will continue that trend.
Fort Belvoir Golf Club - Gunston Course
Played On 07/06/2014Belvoir-Gunston Course
Gunston is the more difficult of the two Belvoir Courses. The Bermuda fairways are just now growing in. Greens are in excellent shape; although they were not mowed on Sunday and therefore very slow. Bunkers are difficult because of maintenance issues. Lazy members don't always rake. Golfers can get on if you have a golfing friend with a DOD or other Government ID. Cost with card $49-$60.
Just found out that courses are open to the Public. Golfers without a DOD ID card must enter through Tully Gate (off Rt 1) This could add about 10 minutes to your trip.
Fort Belvoir Golf Club - Gunston Course
Played On 07/05/2014Belvoir-Woodlawn Course
Woodlawn is the easier of the two Belvoir courses. It is also in much better shape. Bermuda fairways have grown in and the greens are excellent shape. The first two holes are relatively easy; but the course gets more difficult after that. Number 4 is a Par Five that can be reached with 2 well placed shots. Make sure you look at Numbers 9 and 10 before you hit your tee shot.. Number 11, a long Par 4, is the Signature Hole. You can play either course if you have a golfing friend with a DOD or Federal Government ID card. Cost is $40-$60.
Have to update this review. Both courses are undergoing some work. Woodlawn is the best bet for this year. The greens remain in excellent shape; while the fairways are just about grown in. Things should be back to "normal" by next season.
Nags Head Golf Links
Played On 9/20/2013Need Course Knowledge
Some of the holes were difficult because we could determine the distance to trouble. Did have a course book; but it didn't help much on fairway shots. Wound up in trouble too many times turning a 70's round into the 80's.
Old South Golf Links
Played On 11/19/2012Great value in Hilton Head
We always play Old South when we visit Hilton Head. There are a couple of trick holes that must be played more than once to score well. With the large greens, you must know how to control speed.
Thank you for your review, Igolfr1. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Stonewall Golf Club at Lake Manassas. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
