Value is questionable for price

LAYOUT:
It's a very challenging layout. There are quite a few holes with hidden water off the fairways and within doglegs. You have to be cautious off the tee. Many doglegs and the greens are well protected. Not any easy course to get up and down from. Many holes are heavily wooded and have well placed bunkers , so driving is key.

Conditions: Over-all conditions were very good. So will nit pick a bit. The fairways are full of grass. A lot. So much so that you can actually have grain facing into your approach shot. And they are soft and spongy so not much roll. Traps have nice sand in them. Greens were fabulous! Best I played on in HH so far. Rolled probably 10.5 to 11. 100% true!

Value. Paid $100. For that money I would expect the course to be a little more pristine than it was. Fairways were not tight. Crab grass in rough creeping into fairways. Not that it affected play because it didn't. Just not what you'd expect from a place called Country Club of Hilton Head. But greens really make up from any of these short comings.

Best course I've played in HH this year

I like to break my reviews into segments

LAYOUT: I consider HH National a 'big' course. It's got big fairways and greens and can play long. It's not what I'd call narrow. And there aren't ton of fairway bunkers. Green complexes are very modern with swells and ridges, but not extreme. Just enough to make you think twice but not scare you to death. Good combination of long and short, easy and hard. Some risk reward holes as well. So very enjoyable layout.

Conditions: I've played this before last year at the same time. This course is what I'd call pristine. The fairways are full and cut low enough where you don't need to move the ball. Didn't have to move it once. Rough is difficult but not unfair . And there is a very clear mark between fairway and rough. Greens areas are mowed down and good for chipping. Sand is perfect. Greens are very nice. Roll probably 10.5 to 11 .....maybe. very smooth. The over all conditions reminded me of a course you'd see pros play. Best place I've played this time at HH.

Value: Still $90 is not chump change, but I feel for the conditions, it's meets all the criteria for that kind of fee.

Good Value

I like to break my reviews down into sections:
LAYOUT: It's a fun layout. It's a pretty narrow course when you factor in over hanging trees and water down the sides. Bunkers are placed in strategic locations. So driving well off the tee is a big deal. The greens are relatively small and all seem to have traps around. Many doglegs . Over all it's challenging course.

Conditions: It has the look of a municipal course. The grass is cut as you would expect. The greens are on the slow side for bermuda. They roll Ok. would say they are 85% true. It's not a manicured course so it has some rough spots. Traps were good. But all and all, I'd give it a B+

Value: For what I paid I think it was a fair value for the course. I had fun playing it and didn't feel there was anything unfair or the conditions affected my score.

Solid course

GN is a solid course. It's not overly challenging with bunkers or trees or even layout, but does have some strong holes.
The conditions were very good. Plenty of grass and the greens were full and rolled out well. Not fast but certainly not considered slow.
Sometimes they are a little pricey, but found a great rate on golfnow!

A test of golf

The course is short for lower HCP players. We played from the tips.
The layout is super. Lots of elevation changes and lots of doglegs to hit around. Requires accuracy and shot making.
Greens are bent grass and were good. Not fast but not slow, middle of the road.
Only complaint is that it's a bit rough around the edges. If you get off the fairways much you will have a hard time finding your ball because of how much they let the grass grow up.
But over all I will play it more than a few times in the future!
