PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course
Played On 05/24/2022Just a shame
Until this visit, the Mountain Course was my favorite course in Southern California. Unfortunately, I may have to stop naming it altogether.
Greens are horrific. Fairways lined with GUR and burned out areas. Inconsistent tee boxes that are not level. Sand was consistent, but green side bunkers should be a bit softer.
Conditions blamed on a heat spell that scorched the greens… but somehow Desert Willow the day before had almost ideal conditions all over the course. Pathetic.
Save your money, wait a while, and see if it improves. I really hope it does because this is an awesome track that deserves better.
Oak Quarry Golf Club
Played On 01/17/2021Bad wind and warm beer
Could see why reviews can be good for this course, but unfortunately the experience wasn’t great. Wind was horrible and the staff said it’s still a great course. News flash: do not play this course when winds are high if you are a first timer or above a 12 handicap. Terrible.
No beverage cart on a Sunday afternoon? Come on. The beer at the halfway house (after hole 12, by the way) - warm.
Nothing worked. Sorry guys.
Tierra Rejada Golf Club
Played On 11/21/2018Not sure what to think....
I wanted to like Tierra Rejada for all its plusses - price being the top. After the round, I’m going to say that the course itself looks terrific in photos, and the reviews were good, so I booked.
This is a classic example of the deceptiveness of the photos presented. This course isn’t at all that nice. In fact, the front nine is just downright unreasonable - if you’re a recreational golfer, you better bring two dozen balls. The back nine is just fine - in fact, I’d rather play the back nine twice rather than labor on the front nine for two hours.
The cafe/grill is slow, and the workers seem like they just have other things to do or worry about than help you. One outwardly criticized the computer system, as if it was my problem. Ridiculous.
Needless to say, I won’t be returning. There are better options in the Ventura County/Simi Valley area that have good prices and course actually suits the recreational golfer.
