Old American Golf Club
Played On 01/02/2020A great test for your game
The other reviews on Old American are quite accurate. Firm conditions and perfectly rolling greens. Also, it’s not pretty - a little scruffy around the edges - but it is December and partly, that is the desired look. Course is fair off the tee. Many distances to choose from and generous landing areas. However, fairway bunkers will make you think and many have high lips to make it impossible to advance the ball yo the green. The course’s bite is around the greens. Elevated green complexes with false fronts and steep run off areas. Narrow serpentine greens with aggressive bunkering make you work for every green in reg. This is the toughest test of your approaches and shirt game in DFW. OA will rarely be “fun” but if you want to test your game and grind, this is your course.
Cowboys Golf Club
Played On 01/27/2019One of the best public courses in DFW
Don't let the parking lot deceive you. The area around the clubhouse sits in the airport warehouse district. However, all 18 holes are tucked away in a forest that is another world (except for the incessant aircraft noise from DFW). I don't think I've ever this word in a golf course review, but the course was "pretty". Lots of mounding, water and forest. Conditions were excellent in January. The fairways are mounded like a "V" (presumably for drainage), which means that sold drives with end up the in the middle of the fairway. However, if you get on the wrong side of the mounds, you'll leave a lot of balls in the forest. I'm not a fan of the "all-inclusive" green fee. It's designed for corporate client golf but it's expensive unless you plan to eat often and a lot. Get the Jalapeno dogs at the turn.
Golf Club of Houston - Tournament Course
Played On 01/26/2019Course lives up to its ratings
I came expecting a tour quality course and it was. Tee boxes, bunkering, fairways and greens were all excellent in January. The course presented a solid but not overwhelming challenge. It won't make my top ten courses, but was certainly a good way to spend an afternoon.
Tradition at Cypresswood Golf Club
Played On 01/25/2019Not what it was
This course came highly rated, but with weaker recent reviews, so I was curious about this (now disgraced) Keith Foster course. I'm told that Hurricane Harvey kicked this course hard. The routing is not overly creative but each required a strong drive and approach to the green. I'm not sure if the hurricane damaged the drainage, but the course was very, very wet. I was told that it had been that way for 3 months. For that reason, conditions were poor. Drive and plug golf. Non-pristine greens. Soggy bunkers. Apparently, the word is out because it wasn't busy. It was sad. The bones of this course are good, but the skin on them is decaying.
La Cantera Resort - The Palmer Course
Played On 01/24/2019One of the best public courses in TX
I took a week in late January and made a swing through most of the good public courses in TX. I'll admit that I'm an architecture snob and am not usually a fan of Palmer designs. However. this course is my favorite Palmer course. Conditions were terrific for January, Bunkers, greens and tee boxes were well maintained. Every hole is different and offers a varied challenge. The front nine plays through valleys. The back nine is on top of a ridge, with amazing views on Hill Country. It is less busy than its sister course and other top 10 courses in the state. I would strongly recommend this course if you're visiting the San Antonio area.
TPC San Antonio - Canyons Course
Played On 01/23/2019Good, but the weaker sister
Course is quite different from its sister, the Oaks. While the Oaks is quite flat, the Canyons (as it's name implies) is a roller coaster. In January, the conditions were not quite up to TPC quality (the Oaks was tour quality). Compared to Oaks, the course had fewer bunkers, smaller greens and more wind. It was a fun round, but I'd play at the Oaks twice rather than place both courses.
TPC San Antonio - Oaks Course
Played On 01/23/2019Good course for everyone
I'm not normally a fan of Norman designed courses, but this is one of his best. He has managed to take a relatively flat piece of terrain and craft an interesting routing. Although this is a PGA tour course, Norman has always left a bailout area for us amateurs so that the course is playable by everyone. Not common to be both a tour and resort course at the same time.. Course is heavily bunkered but the greens are gigantic and relatively flat. Enjoyable.
Tenison Park Golf Club - Tenison Highlands Course
Played On 11/06/2018Good Muni
This course is better than most munis. First, it is professionally designed. The tee boxes, bunkering and green complexes are built to a high standard. There is a lot of contour to the fairways and significant elevation change. It certainly feels like a more expensive course. The greens rolled very true for November and I never had a bad fairway lie. Conditioning was good for a public course. The bunkers need some work. There are a number of well placed water hazards. The closing stretch 13 -18 could compete with many private courses and the closing hole is particularly strong. Overall, a good and enjoyable challenge. It's a four star property on a muni maintenance budget. I wish I could give it 3.75 stars. I'll be back.
