Fort Cherry Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2022Okay
Well kept. Heavy and slow play. Somewhat short, simple, and boring layout. Greens roll fast, true, (but do not hold) and are probably best feature of this course. Staff very nice and do a commendable job.
Oak Tree Golf Club
Played On 06/12/2021Great Layout
Challenging variety of golf holes twisting through rolling and wooded terrain. Quite tight off the tee with long rough and well trapped greens. Correct ball placement essential for scoring so helps to know the track. Conditions better than most, but not CC level. Biggest disappointment were slower greens than seem appropriate for the rest of the golf experience at Oak Tree. I like the course and the value seems well worth the price.
South at Mill Creek Park Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2020Deluxe Version of Muni-Style Golf
Course winds thru mature oak forest which makes a pleasant park-like atmosphere. Typical older course that is mostly flat and walkable, though relatively few take to foot. Challenge here stems from some narrow and lengthy Par 4's and a collection of strategically placed trees throughout the course. Stray swings are penalized by snug tree-lined fairways that will quickly gobble up a shot, but are forgiving in that most balls are not lost on the forest floor that is relatively clear of brush. Nice touch by design I am sure. Greens average difficulty and not fast, nor slow. Weakness of the track represented by a blandish collection of Par 3's. Weekends tend to play at moderate pace. Price quite affordable. Facilities well-kept. Overall nice experience.
Flying B Golf Course
Played On 05/30/2020A Favorite Layout but Awful Pace
Travel an hour to play here couple x's per year because we think the course layout is unique, challenging, and fun. Requires more decision making than some other courses. Conditions normally good and cost is reasonable. However, pace of play on weekends last couple trips has become terrible. Had an online tee-time but backed up almost 35 minutes before hitting a ball. Left after 14 holes of standing around. Unfortunately, not returning again until some changes are made to address the issue.
Manatee County Golf Course
Played On 12/26/2019Nice Experience
Well maintained public golf course. Track layout simple, fair, and moderately challenging, but little outstanding in terms of memorable golf experience. Most impressed by decent pace of play despite busy conditions. Staff exceedingly accommodating and pleasant. Would definitely return.
The Highlands Golf Course
Played On 12/25/2019Liked it
I really liked the course layout. Nice mix of hole designs with varying degree of challenge. A couple blind shots and tight fairways that would change my club selection (and lower my score) if I played here again. On the downside, the greens were in rather grainy condition and revealed almost no break even on side slopes. Some diseased patches also.. but I assume this only temporary cond. Play moved briskly. Price was excellent for value.
Indian Run Golf Club
Played On 08/24/2019Fairly Good Experience
Not a top level course, but better than average and a fair challenge. Course neither easy nor difficult. Nice mix of hole designs consisted of predominately open tee and fairway shots with a few exceptions and an occasional obstacle. Fairways and greens in good shape despite recent dry conditions, but allot of chunky crabgrass in the rough. Greens true though a little bumpy when we played late in the day. Used every stick in the bag except 4-i and moderate elevation changes keeps one guessing at club selection. Pace of play was good. Only legit annoyance were the unlevel tee boxes...Why not fix? Price was a bargain and we had an enjoyable day that merits a future return. All in all, I liked this course.
Pheasant Ridge Golf Club
Played On 07/13/2019Tight Fairways, Blind Shots, and Slow Play
Pittsburgh area golfer who played PR first time this past weekend. Course was in very good condition and staff should be complimented... However, we really didn't like the course design and play was painfully slow with only twosomes and threesomes in front and behind (but it was a weekend). From my recollection, there are 12 blind shots that are required due mostly to abundant elevation changes, which is way too many for efficient play and particularly troublesome for golfers not familiar with the layout. There is no map on the card or GPS of the holes to assist. A couple tight holes is nice for any track, but this course's main challenge derives almost entirely from tight fairways with only a few moderately wide areas that justify using a driver. While we did not lose many balls, it is apparent from the narrow tree lined fairways and lack of sight distance at PR, why play might be slow if a golfer cannot regularly see where the ball lands. Never played the rescue club (for control) as often as I did here. The price was moderate. All in all, my partners and I felt our experience here was just "ok," and we probably would not return in the near future without some incentive to bring us back.
Quicksilver Golf Club
Played On 09/10/2017Country Club Conditions and Price
I play have played this course a couple times annually for the last 20 years. The track is more open than tight with most of the challenge derived from a plethora of fairway and/or green-side bunkers and very fast-sloped putting surfaces. The condition of the course is almost always top notch. The downsides are that QS is usually a 4.5 - 5 hour weekend round, and the price is among the costliest public courses in the Pittsburgh metro. Also, the recent removal of the blue tees (reportedly to speed play) pushed my 5-12 handicap group to the white tees and in the process eliminated the need for most long iron play. Note to staff... Please let the paying participant decide which tee box is best suited for their game - the abundance of bunkers and arduous 3-putt greens have more to do with slow play than the length of the course. I will probably continue to return once a year, but in my opinion there are several equal or finer higher-end golf experiences elsewhere within a 50 mile radius that are a better value.
Gay Brewer Jr. Course at Picadome
Played On 08/26/2017Good Muni-Style Course
Visiting in Lexington and stopped at Picadome. Had a pleasant experience on this very apparent older design course. The conditions were pretty good and course neatly laid out and cared for. Level of difficulty on this rather short track is not hard from the the forward tee box, but the blue tees add significant complexity and length to toughen up a good number of the holes. Used all but two clubs in my bag playing from the tips. Only a few real threats of losing a ball exist on this course and most danger is derived from the placement of large mature trees, a couple tight dog-legs, and generally very small greens (smallest I recall anywhere) which require a certain degree of precision with the iron play, particularly on approach shots. Great course for walkers and lovers of muni-style golf. Will return.
The Links at Firestone Farms
Played On 07/01/2017One Of The Finest Public Course Layouts
Played this course several times per year and always can't wait to return. The layout is a fun, challenging, and exciting array of holes mostly designed in a links fashion that often includes a wind variable. I would give the "course layout" 6 stars if I could. Despite a generally high difficulty level of the track, most holes seem quite fair. Have to hit the ball consistently straight here or it will be a long day. The par-3's give nothing away either.
Only downside on this latest trip is that the generally wet conditions this year have taken a toll on most of the sand traps and a few fairways. Still, for the price, I don't know of a better public golf venue in Eastern Ohio / Western PA.
Knoll Run Golf Course
Played On 06/17/2017Above Average
Golf course was a decent track, for a decent price, that was in in relatively good shape. No complaints and staff friendly. However, rather basic and simple layout was not exciting enough to warrant a five star rating. Back nine seemed more of a challenge than the front. Will return.
Turkana Golf Course
Played On 05/20/2017Made For The Driver
If you like hitting a driver, this course is for you. Wide and mostly treeless fairways combine with large changes in elevation between tee and green, to provide open range launch points for tee box shots where a good drive can hang long enough for the hitter to stand back and admire. Smallish greens nicely sloped but not terribly fast on a wet day. No sand and only couple ponds but a fair number of grass bunkers for increased difficulty. The elements will determine how tough this course will play. A hot, windy, and dry day can add a bunch of strokes to your card. The best attribute of this course is how different it is from most other tracks in the area.
Ponderosa Golf Course
Played On 04/08/2017Nice Course
Ponderosa is a nice, but somewhat unremarkable course. Shoot here a handful X's per year and find that as long as the play moves along, we generally have a good day. Course is walkable, but just barely. Fair amount of up and down, sideways lies, and blind shots common with Western PA golf. Course not terribly hard or long, but the greens are usually in better than average condition and roll true. Back nine layout surpasses the front which has a couple quirky holes.. Price seems a couple bucks expensive for the quality of the course, but the convenience factor for Western Pgh suburbs will keep me coming back.
West/North at Rolling Acres Golf Course
Played On 10/15/2016Average Course But Great Value
Play this course a couple times per year. The best feature is the price. Usually can't beat the value for the money ($15 GolfNow). The conditions are usually above average but the layout is a little boring with only a few hazards. Greens are smallish and roll ok. Sometimes hard to distinguish fairway from rough, but not much penalty for spraying the ball around anyway. Like many courses, if you drive the ball half decent and can hit a fairway wood, the only other clubs you need are 9-iron and wedges. Good course to walk and there is always a fair number of golfers doing just that.
Village Green Golf Course
Played On 09/03/2016Tight Out Of The Tee Box
Most tee shots require tunnel vision guidance onto narrow and hilly fairways with trouble on both sides. But fortunately you don't need much tee length since the course is somewhat short and better players can almost leave the big dog at home in favor of the 3W. As difficult as the tee shots are, the rest of the course is relatively straight forward. The greens are well cared for and true, but generally unguarded by hazards or other dangers. Every putt inside 20 feet feels makeable. Overall conditions of the course were good considering how hot and dry the summer has been. Price is right for the venue.
Flying B Golf Course
Played On 08/19/2016Surprisingly Good Course
While not advertised as a golf destination, I found the quality of play here to be as good as some higher profile tracks. Great conditions, small greens, and tight fairways. You won't lose many balls if you spray your shots, but there will be a heavy price to pay on the scorecard. Only complaint is lack of colored flags to represent hole placement means a range-finder is necessary equipment here. Considering the reasonably priced green fees, this place ranks as one of the greatest regional values in golf.
Fort Cherry Golf Club
Played On 08/05/2016Basic Course, But Not Bad
Nice simple layout and picturesque setting. Quite a forgiving course off the tee box, but difficulty increases a little bit as you get closer to fairly large greens. Pace of play generally not too bad. Conditions very good for most of this year. Back nine better challenge than the front. A few too many driver plus wedge holes and I wish the course had more deciduous trees, but overall golf here is a consistently good experience.
Old Landing Golf Course
Played On 07/23/2016Muni-Style Public Golf
Every year I stop here while on vacation. The beach needs a basic, economical, basic grade golfing option in lieu of the expensive resort courses, and this is it. The layout has huge potential with a variety of holes winding amongst mature trees and the inner bay. This course, which is pleasant to walk or ride, always seems to demand the use of every club in the bag. HOWEVER, the conditions are not good - in fact, average at best. The greens are very slow and the tee-boxes and fairways are well populated with clover and crab grass. Despite the conditions, I have always had a good time here and use the course to get my swings in between ventures to the high-end and expensive resort courses. I do hope this course stays open despite rumors of the opposite. The beach needs this type of venue... and just a little improvement would make it a gem.
Moon Golf Club
Played On 06/11/2016Good and Not So Good
Play here frequently only because I live close. Course comprised of some unique and interesting holes sprinkled amongst a handful of poorly laid out holes, and couple awful holes. This is a relatively short and tight track with excessive elevation change that is prone to creating scenic views, blind approach shots, and bad fairway bounces. The staff however, does a admirable job of maintaining greens, fairways, and tees to make the course tolerable. Depending upon when you play, the pace is often very very slow. Also, leagues scheduled for almost all available slots to the working stiff- so don't bother to show up without a tee time unless it is late Sat or Sun afternoon. Heavy play on this course is not so much a reflection of the quality of golf, as much as the lack of locally available alternatives.
