Mount Dora Golf Club
Played On 02/21/2021A nice surprise.
So, I thought I booked myself at "The Country Club of Mount Dora", but it turns out I booked "Mount Dora Golf Club". Well, that's not confusing or anything! I think the newer one is to blame for a poor naming choice. Only one course should have the town name when the town is so small, but oh well. Same issue in ChampionsGate, but I digress. I made it back to "Mount Dora Golf Club" just in time to tee off. I was pleasantly surprised. The first few holes are a bit boring and the course plays straight, straight, straight in general, but the elevation changes and upside-down bowl greens add all the interest you need. The fairways were okay, but the greens excellent. It was VERY busy, but I was met with one very nice person after the next. In the end, we did finish in just a touch over 4 hours, so actually on pace despite being stacked with players. You do need to keep your eyes open though. The tight layout means lots of errant shots coming your way. All in all, an enjoyable surprise and somewhere I look forward to playing again now that I know the layout.
Waldorf Astoria Golf Club
Played On 05/20/2020Best maintained, but low on challenge.
So, as you will see from the other reviews, this could be about the best (or close to it) maintained course you will set foot on and it has some very nice natural views. Green speed was average but true. I think I saw one spot next to a green that had some spotty fungus or something, beyond that, it's darn near perfect. My only negative was the challenge. I didn't find it very challenging at all. Most holes are pretty straight, so if you hit straight, it's pretty simple. They do have bunkers in some strategic places which I did find (first time there, so didn't know the place), but beyond that, it's flat, not a ton of water and not many doglegs. They have a $60 rate right now which I would say is about right. For me, it's not interesting enough for the usual $100+, but the course conditions are well worth that price. So, if you want a perfectly maintained course and a nice low score, this is perfect.
Falcon's Fire Golf Club
Played On 05/17/2020Finally got out there.
I feel like I am the last Orlando resident to play here. People have been telling me how great it is for years, so I finally went because they had a low enough rate (I typically limit my local golf to $60 since I play several times a week). Well, I see why the rate was so low. Very few things were in good shape. Fairways bare, areas around the greens were really bad. Patchy SLOW greens and the tee boxes really bad. I could not focus on the layout with such poor course conditions. At least I was out early and done in less than 2 hours. Staff was friendly enough. Really shocked by the course conditions though.
Meadowbrook Golf Club
Played On 05/08/2017Soooooo happy!
I used to play here a good amount starting about 6 years ago. This course has one of the most interesting layouts you are likely to ever see, so it was always a treat. Over the last few years the conditions went way down. My last round just over 2 years ago ended after 4 holes with a demand for my money back. I saw the recent reviews and went ahead and gave it a shot. THANK YOU, THANK YOU to the new owners!!! It's not 100% yet. I would say a solid 75%, but that is enough to really enjoy it and to see the direction it is going. The main remaining issues are the bunkers, front 9 tee boxes and (ok small point) the cart path. The bunkers are the worse part. Basically cart path with dirt on it. The tee boxes on the front a pretty bad, so tee it up and the cart paths, well, I'm sure those will be taken care of eventually. Beyond that stuff, it's SO MUCH BETTER. You can now play it and enjoy a good round again. The greens are much, much better and the fairways are very good as well. Anyone reading this, GO PLAY THERE and get some more money into the place so it can be the gem it deserves to be. Also, the guy in the pro shop was super nice. Another "fix" over the last time I was there for sure. I WILL BE BACK!!!
Timacuan Golf Club
Played On 04/30/2017Timacuan???
Where did they move Timacuan to? I played yesterday at a place in the same location, same layout and even the same name, but that was NOT the Timacuan I used to play before I moved two years ago. I am being facetious of course, but what the heck happened? This used to be a course to get excited to go play and now it's a mess. On a weekend morning, no starter, no ranger, no cart running and the conditions are terrible. There were two tee boxes where the grass actually touched the bottom of a tee'd up ball for my driver! The bunkers were like hitting of a sandy cart path, the fairways full of dead areas and weeds, greens with rolled down weeds growing through. Really a HUGE disappointment for a course that was always in great shape.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 01/01/2017Lookin' great at 100.
I play every New Years day there to get the years on the right foot. She is looking better than ever! Noone should look that good on their 100th birthday! ;)
Harmony Golf Preserve
Played On 10/02/2016EXCELLENT!
First time here and I loved it. The layout is excellent, very memorable holes and several requiring some thought. The greens, fairways and bunkers were in superb shape. The rough was a bit too high, so you need to keep it in the fairway, but that is my only issue with it. The staff were great and the pace very good. I play mostly at Disney and this course reminds me a lot of the Disney courses.
ChampionsGate Golf Club - International
Played On 03/26/2016An excellent round.
Really liked this one. Conditions were generally excellent. The greens can be tricky to read with subtle breaks, fairways were great and the layouts memorable for the most part. It does require at least one complete round before you can really play for a good score. The bunkers were in bad shape after the rains, but they did add a "local rule" for a free drop out of any bunker with a blue stake, so I actually USED the bunkers a couple times to get a free drop :) The staff were very nice and helpful and the course at the end of the day when the sun is going down... Well, bring your camera. I booked myself another round right after finishing for this coming weekend.
Thanks for the awesome 5 star review! Great tips for other golfers as well. Hope to see you again soon!
Miccosukee Golf & Country Club - Dolphin Course
Played On 03/21/2016Great option when in Miami
It's a bit out of the way for most people and has a very typical Miami course feel, but has to be one of the best in Miami (aside from the VERY expensive courses). The conditions were quite good, but as usual in Miami, the rough is mostly St. Augustine that creeps in, so stay in the fairway. The bunkers were very hard, but it had just rained the night before. Aside from that, the fairways and greens were very good, the layout fun (requires at least one or two rounds to really know what to do) and the staff VERY friendly and helpful. I live in Orlando and am spoiled with the number and quality of courses around home, but this would fit in nice here and would be a regular stop for me as it will be when I am in Miami.
Sandhill Crane Golf Club - Championship Golf Course
Played On 01/18/2016Most improved.
This course gets my #1 most improved course award. I last played there 3 years ago and it rated a solid "ok". Interesting layout and wildlife, but the conditions and staff we just ok. Well, I found that they apparently made some major moves and the place is really great now. Course conditions are excellent, the carts now have sophisticated GPS and the staff we very nice. The starter gave me some great advice and was a really friendly guy. They even planted some people out on the course to check on us and have some nice conversation. If I were hitting my driver better that morning it would have been a perfect round ;)
Thank you for your comments! Our staff is committed to providing the best turf & service possible!
The Reserve at Orange Lake Resort
Played On 01/10/2016Really not good.
The staff is always friendly although there was no starter and on a weekend, so players are left to decide when and how to start playing, not a good thing. The thing that really surprised me as someone who has played here several times (not in over a year though) are the course conditions. In fact, I don't know what surprises me more, the condition or the recent positive reviews... The fairways especially on the front 9 are terrible and the first 4 greens awful. And even when it does improve on the back, it is still mediocre at best. Now, it has always had a "natural" feel to it meaning it was always a bit rough and of course surrounded my nature areas which is nice and adds to the difficulty, but now it is just bad.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 01/01/2016Stop reading reviews and GO!
What can I say, people have long told me that this is the best public course in Florida. Well, now that I have played it three times, I can say I TOTALLY agree. It's out of the way for just about everyone, but very worth any drive. It reminds me of courses in Pennsylvania with all the elevation changes. It has a history you can really feel and requires some thought for most shots.
MetroWest Golf Club
Played On 12/12/2015Not what it used to be, but still great to play.
It's been a couple/few years since I last played there and at that time, it was pristine. Well, it has slipped a bit mostly at the tee boxes, but it is still a very worthy place to play. The staff were all great from pro shop to the starter.
EastWood Golf Course
Played On 11/22/2015WOW, and that ain't good.
Staff very nice as usual, but no rangers out or cart running, so did not encounter too many. The layout is great, but the conditions have deteriorated so bad that it's playable, but not enjoyable. I have been coming on and off for several years an this is the worse I have seen it. Greens are OK in terms of rolling, but have loads of bad areas. The fairways alike are OK, but not much roll. The rough, horrible...
Twin Rivers Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2015Really devolved.
I have played here many times, often the conditions were good, the past couple of years shaky at best. I had a tee time at 7:15 and was not the first person out, but the maintenance guys were still out mowing the green and putting up flags. If you have people starting that early, they need to start earlier. From hole 3 on it was wait, wait, wait... Now the conditions. It is a rainy time of year, but there are plenty of other courses in fine shape. It was not unplayable, but not far off and certainly not enjoyable. Bunkers were all either flooded or cement and the greens.. Oh the greens. Terrible.
Scammer,
I am very sorry that your experience wasn't everything you were expecting. It has been a tough summer but we are working very hard to get the conditions back up and they are making great strides everyday! We hope you will give us another chance soon and see the change we have made from all the hard work!
Lakes/Dolphin Golf Course at Cocoa Beach Country Club
Played On 02/12/2015Great scenery, decent layout, BAD scheduling.
This was my second time out. This time I played River/Dolphin last time was Dolphin/Lake. I asked to specifically avoid Lake because last time I found it to be in poor condition and pretty boring. The River/Dolphin combo is better for sure. The views of the Banana River and all the wildlife are wonderful. It does tend to get windy there, so be prepared for that. The greens were in very good condition, but the tee boxes and many parts of the fairways leave a lot to be desired. All in all, a fun round though. The main issue we had was the very poor scheduling. They were pushing people out left and right with no ranger to keep things moving. We teed off at 1:00 and had to quit after the 17th hole because there was no sun left at almost 6:00. It was 5 hours of wait, wait, wait. And on a Thursday afternoon...
Rio Pinar Golf
Played On 11/01/2014A solid "OK".
The fairways, greens and bunkers are in great shape which of course is the most important thing, but the tee boxes and rough are terrible. So, that would not be enough to warrant a "just ok" review by itself, but the layout is pretty boring. Very few memorable holes, so that loses quite a few points for me. If the layout were better, I would give it a much higher rating but the main playing areas are in excellent shape so it can make for a great round in terms of quality of play. Just kind of boring though. But, still MUCH better than a great layout on a dog track of a course, right? Oh, and I do love all the fox squirrels there.
Palmetto Golf Course
Played On 03/19/2014Great and terrible.
So this is an odd review to write. First the good... The staff are the friendliest and most helpful I have EVER come across. And not just "nice for Miami", but anywhere. From the guy in the pro shop to Bob the starter, the ranger and the girl in the grill, they were all really nice and very helpful. They alone made me want to possibly come back at some point. Also, the new greens and bunkers were in great shape. Ok, now the bad. The fairways are so bad that you barely notice the great greens and bunkers. I am very good at making greens in regulation and barely did all morning because of the horrid fairways. They are quite possibly the worse I have seen anywhere and are nearly unplayable. The layout if pretty average, but could be enjoyable enough if they could get the fairways under control. Nothing "fair" about them. I hope the next time I am in Miami they will have that fixed because the people there are SO nice that I would like to support their course.
Redland Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/16/2014Not great, but worth playing.
The condition of the greens was acceptable, not great. Same with the bunkers and fairways. The biggest issue is the huge amount of St. Augustine growing everywhere. Chipping off that stuff right next to the green is no fun. A good layout for an older course, nothing too amazing, but some memorable holes. The trees are really nice including an impressive huge old mahogany and of course banyans all over. The guy in the pro shop was pretty rude in general, but of course that is only a small part of the experience.
Chiefland Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/02/2014Quite a nice surprise
So honestly, being the only course for miles and out in Chiefland, I was not going with high expectations. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. The fairways and bunkers were in great condition and the greens excellent. The rough is cut and kept clean. The only downside is that the layout is pretty straightforward and kind of "boring". There is no real need for much thought or planning your shots. Hit them straight and you will be just fine. On the good side, it's a great course to get LOW scores on. I will make this a regular stop when I visit the area.
Thanks for the review scamner. We appreciate the support! Can't wait to have you back out here!
