Sweetwater Country Club
Played On 02/17/2014Worth playing if the greens improve.
An ok course. The fairways were in good shape and the front 9 greens were good. The back 9 were brown, dead and terrible. I hit 8 of the 9 greens on the back and not one ball stayed on. Also, there is really only one hole I would call memorable. Most are pretty straight forward. Looks like the designers first course. Anyway, it was in decent condition (except again for the back 9 greens). I would play here again for a practice round or something if the greens were improved.
Turtle Creek Golf Club
Played On 02/09/2014Not a top 10, but a great place to play.
The fairways and rough had some spots that need some real attention, but for the most part were in good shape. As long as you keep the ball in the fairway and land in the hitting area, it's great. The bunkers and especially the greens are excellent! The staff and even the many other players (I was a single and probably played through 8 groups) were all VERY nice. It's a relaxed environment and a fun course. The best part is probably the scenic environment around the course. I must have seen about every Florida bird I know of and many turtles. Also the trees and water are very nice to look at. The layout is nothing special, but is quite fair and fun. I look forward to many future rounds.
Rolling Hills Golf Club
Played On 01/18/2014Pleasantly surprised...
I went in not expecting too much given the very low price. The driving range is kind of a joke (pond) and they give you balls that look like they were sold there when it opened in 1926, but it's adequate to warm up. If you can keep it in the fairway and on the greens, you would think you were at an expensive course. Both are very well kept and play true. The rough is just that, but is at least cut, so can't complain too much. The first several holes are fairly forgettable, but then there are several that are very nice and both interesting to play and to admire looking at. It does fell like an old course (as it is), but personally I kind of like that. I plan to keep playing there as my frequent backup to the more expensive courses I usually play.
The Country Club at Deer Run
Played On 10/22/2013Very average, but I do like it.
Now, I have to say first that it is close to my house and if it were not, I probably would not play there. BUT, I have to say I like the place. The staff are nice, the layout interesting and the pace of play generally very good (as long as you are not there while the members are there in bulk and even then they tend to be good about letting you play through). That's the good. The bad? Well, they have always struggled with the maintenance. It has improved greatly over the last couple years, but still tends to be pretty rough. So, it's a fun day of golf, but don't expect too much.
Hawk's Landing Golf Club
Played On 9/27/2013Always fun, challenging and a GREAT staff.
I have played there 3 times now and enjoyed every round. The staff really go beyond to be friendly and helpful. My first 2 rounds I was there as a single and they found a spot for me to start on a different hole to make sure I could get through with as little waiting as possible. This last time, the starter wanted to combine my cart with the player he was pairing me with, but backed off when he noticed that he smoked a lot and I did not. Just nice of him to think of such things. Some holes are kind of standard, but a few are tough and interesting. The only thing that I find annoying is the fact that you pretty much have to valet your car. Which means a bit of a wait after the round, but that is knit-picking...
EastWood Golf Course
Played On 4/26/2013Excellent condition for better players
The rough is pretty rough and the bunkers have some major drainage issues, but the fairways and greens are fantastic. With some real unique (in a good way) holes, the overall great condition and a REALLY great price, I think I need to make this a regular stop. If you are not an accurate player and end up in the rough a lot, it would be a pretty tough round though as the rough is pretty much just mowed and not really "maintained". All things considered though, the price to value is great.
Meadowbrook Golf Club
Played On 4/21/2013Great design, horrid condition.
This was the first time I ever stopped after 3 holes and demanded my money back. It is not an exaggeration to say that my back yard is a more playable golf course. I love the layout and think this place could be a real gem, but the condition is the worse I have ever seen in any course, EVER. With so few options when I visit Gainesville, I wish they would really fix this place up, but it would take a LOT at this point. A real shame.
