Willodell Golf Club of Niagara
Played On 04/15/2023Hunters Pointe Golf Course
Played On 06/04/2016Paid for 18, left after 9 because of slow play.
This course used to be a personal favourite of mine. It offers a links style course that can be pretty challenging if you can't keep it in the fairways and some long par 3s. They changed a few holes on the front 9 of the course because of a new highway which made using a GPS useless and the holes are very oddly laid out and confusing.
This would have been easy to overlook had the course not been playing SO SLOW!! We tee'd off and saw no one on the hole in front so it looked promising. After hole number one we got to the par 3, second and were stuck behind a group waiting on the tee and another playing the hole already. By the time we tee'd off there were 2 groups behind us as well. We waited approximately 15 minutes EVERY single hole.
We tee'd off late (3:30PM) which should still have given us plenty of time to finish 18 holes since sunset is around 830PM. By the end of just 9 frustrating holes it was already 6:30PM. That's 3 hours for 9 holes!! There is no way at that pace we could have finished so we walked off the course and asked for a raincheck. (It turns out the 2 groups behind us ended up doing the same thing.)
The one saving grace is the staff were very polite and accommodating in providing a raincheck and even apologised for the delay on the course. I just wish they policed the course a little more to keep slow moving groups moving along to avoid this in the future.
This was the first time in my 7 years of golfing I have felt the need to walk off a course halfway through a round due to slow play. I'll be going back to finish my back 9 raincheck, but may not golf here again unless I'm the first off in the morning so I'm not waiting.
Sawmill Golf Course
Played On 05/29/2016Great Course and Layout
The course is in great shape this year. Greens are firm, yet receptive. Bunkers are well kept with soft sand. And the staff are great. It was hot out so it was nice to see the cart girl out to offer refreshments several times during the round. The gazebo grill at the turn is great for a one stop shop and Sawmill even has it's own app where you can order food while you play to be ready for you when you arrive so it doesn't slow down your round. Definitely one of my favourite courses in the region and will be back for more again soon.
Pelham Hills Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/28/2016Greens and bunkers need some work
I've played this course a couple times over the years before at full price (about $60) and have had mixed results. Usually it tends to be very dry and hard. I decided to give it a try again for a cheaper rate with an online deal. It was about 34C when we golfed so it was hot and dry, which is to be expected with little rain lately. Though it made it hard to get a ball to stick on the greens because they were rock hard. On top of that, they did not roll true at all. They were lumpy all over and everyone's putts were taking weird and sudden turns on the greens all day long which was frustrating. It seemed as though they had not been watered or rolled (at least not well) in some time. Tee boxes were nearly impossible to stick a tee in and the bunkers were more like concrete with a layer of dirt sprinkled on top.
It was brutally hot out so we had to try to stay hydrated as best we could. I was disappointed to learn that there is no one serving beverages or food during play on the course so the only time to get those things is before the round or after hole 9. Additionally, there are no bathrooms anywhere besides the clubhouse so if you have to go while playing, too bad!
I would only play this course again after some rain and only for a discounted rate. If you have a weak bladder, or you like purchasing food and beverages while you play, I would recommend golfing somewhere else with better amenities and service.
We appreciate your criticisms GT86golf. We will look to improve in areas that you believe are a concern, but our staff works to ensure every golfers experience is a great one. Please contact us at pelhamhillsgc@outlook.com to discuss your round in greater depth. We will never discount any golfer's opinions, despite how varied they may be, so we hope to have you back for a more enjoyable experience next time.
Cardinal Lakes Golf Club - Heron Course
Played On 05/22/2016Stay out of the water!
I golf this course regularly and enjoy it each time. I still find The Heron a challenge especially if you don't hit the ball particularly long. Water comes into play on more than half of the holes so keep it straight off the tees. Greens are quite large and roll pretty straight in comparison to The Sparrow across the street which tends to have more undulation.
Cardinal Lakes Golf Club - Sparrow Course
Played On 05/22/2016Great course for a quick tune up.
This is a great little course to tune up your game. You don't have to use driver on many holes so if you want to practice your iron game or you're walking it's a real treat. Greens roll true and can be tricky at times depending on flag placement. It was a little slow but it was a holiday weekend. Still finished in about 4 hours. It usually only takes 3.
Sawmill Golf Course
Played On 04/23/2016Course in great early season form
I love playing this course and this experience was no different. Being early in the season my expectations for course conditions are usually low. The staff at Sawmill have really kept their course in great shape to start the year! The tee boxes, fairways and greens were lush green and the sand traps were in good shape. They have removed a lot of trees to make the course play a little easier than years prior so pace of play should speed up for your average golfer. If you haven't golfed here, you're missing a great gem. They offer a Player's Club membership that I have been a part of for 3 years now. If you don't know what it is. Check it out because it's a great value.
Rolling Meadows Golf and Country Club
Played On 04/16/2016Slow round because of overbooking
I have golfed at this course many times over the years and have enjoyed my experience most times. It is early in the season so I did not expect the course to be in perfect condition - which it was not. The bunkers weren't in the best shape and the greens left something to be desired. Specifically, there were several greens that had lines running through them that were bare patches that would cause a rolling ball to go off course. And quite a few had the same bare patch in a circle around the greens by the fringe making it difficult to accurately hit a bump and run or putt from off the green.
The main complaint I had with the day was the wait times. (The clubhouse had said that they booked times 7 minutes apart.) After our first tee shots we were already waiting and wait times continued to get longer and longer as the day went on. By the end of 9 holes, we had reached the 3 hour mark (We were golfing in a twosome with cart). There was no point in playing through groups ahead as they seemed to be waiting as well. At one point we noticed 3 separate groups waiting to tee off on one hole several holes behind us. It ended up taking us 5.5 hours to finish our round. I think the clubhouse overbooked and it made it hard to get in any rhythm and really enjoy the day.
I will be back, as I usually enjoy this course, but I'm hoping I can finish a round sub 4.5 hours next time.
GT86golf,
Please accept our apologies for slow play. We're working to rectify this problem.
You need to delete Hunters Pointe on your GPS and reload it to activate course changes. GPS providers are very slow to respond to changes as we have been trying since December last year to move them along.
