About
Played the mini-tours after graduating from college; entered the PGA Professional Management program. Realized the golf business was not for me and eventually became the GM & VP of two automotive dealer groups then opened a technical writing and editing consultancy before retiring at age 36. Was shot in a hunting accident and lost five fingers and and a piece of my abdomen. After very hard work, I am an 18 handicap from the senior tees and I am even more passionate about the game.

Kilmarlic Golf Club
Played On 05/21/2015Interesting Design
Course was in excellent condition. The staff was friendly but in a forced and robotic way. Good practice facilities. The layout was a little too Mickey Mouse for me but land constraints likely contributed to said design flaws. It was strange to play a par-3 that was longer than one of the par-4's. There is no course on the OBX that is worth a $100+ green fee (including The Currituck Club) and Kilmarlic is no exception. But, overall, Kilmarlic is a fun-albeit tight-course.
Holly Ridge Golf Course
Played On 05/19/2015A Goat Wouldn't Graze Here
I paid $100 for me and my wife to play on ant hills and crab grass. Fairways are indistinguishable from rough. Greens were in decent shape but stimped at about an 8. I left a valuable in the cart and called the course when I realized what I had done. Staff did not bring it inside deciding to rather leave it on a bench outside and not surprisingly it was stolen. This course needs to be razed.
Sea Scape Golf Links
Played On 04/15/2015Not worth the money
This is a $45 course masquerading as a premium $100+ course. Staff acts like you are bothering them. Tight course with lots of native grasses and water waiting to accept your offerings. Some nice views.
The Federal Club
Played On 04/08/2015Should be on "Best in State" list
Near-perfect conditions. One of Palmer's best designs. Will become an elite club once the permanent clubhouse is completed. Superb practice facilities. Greens are lightning fast but true.
Hanover Golf Club
Played On 03/09/2015A Ruined Gem
The new design is an abomination and disgraces the legacy the old design spent 46 years building. The driving range is a joke and aesthetically appears forced. The signature par-3 is gone. The best par-4 in central VA is gone. When I saw the new 12th and13th holes, I puked. This course used to be a diamond in the rough and a true joy to play. Now, it's just depressing. Thanks HM!
The Homestead Resort - Old Course
Played On 10/15/2014Historical & Beautiful
It's a rare treat to tee off of the oldest continuous use tee box in America. That is how you begin your round on the first hole. The course is lush, green, and well-maintained. The layout is unique with expected elevation changes. Be certain to study the layout because their is trouble in areas you can't see. The green speeds were inconsistent but in superb shape. I'm pretty sure I heard Sam Snead's ghost tell me I sucked.
The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Cottage
Played On 7/1/2013Superb Value
The Hollows is a superb value. The three nines are always in good condition and their greens may be some of the most underrated in the area. They are quick, possess subtle breaks and generally role true. Despite the lack of any stunning landscapes, the designers adeptly created a diverse array of holes many possessing conspicuous individuality. My only demurs are the attitude of one of the elderly, part-time shop employees and the frustrating fact that only about one in three GPS systems work in their golf cart fleet.
Fox Hollow Golf Club
Played On 01/10/2013Memory Lane
I played the Florida mini-tours and was a pro at Saddlebrook Resort from 1996 to 1998. Of all the courses I played during those two wonderful years, Fox Hollow was my favorite.
Thank you for taking the time to review the course. We take your feedback very seriously and we will work to provide a better experience in the future.
