Woolfox Golf & Country Club
Played On 10/27/2023New design shows promise, needs distance markers
Have played here many times over the years. Course has been redesigned in last two years, with another redesign on the way for a couple of holes. These changes are to be welcomed, and clearly a lot of money has been spent on the new facilities, etc. One thing that's still needed, and would really help those who haven't played here before, is distance markers on the par 4s and 5s. Prior to the changes, there were plastic markers in the fairways at 200, 150 and 100 yds, however most of these were destroyed by mowers. Even simple painted wooden posts by the side of the fairway would be an improvement.
Otherwise, course in good condition. Greens very good. Some tee boxes are in need of levelling out and returfing, but otherwise a good course for all standards of golfer.

Played On 07/13/2023Bedding in well, needs a little more to make it better
Used to be a member here and played over 100 times.
Course was redesigned in 21/22 with new lakes and a couple of holes were added, replacing holes lost to leisure facilities. Played on a quiet Thursday afternoon. Hot Deal price was £19.99.
New layout of course is now bedding in well. Planting around lakes is getting there. The new holes are also fine.
Tee boxes were generally poor, not especially level and with poor grass condition.
Greens were quite furry, that might just be down to the mowing schedule. Fairways were mostly fine. Some holes have always had drainage issues, and even in July, there were still some soggy areas.
Old course had embedded distance markers. Most of those were destroyed over the years by mowers and what's left remains in place. Fairway marking is therefore pretty much absent It wouldn't take much to either replace them or to bang in some painted stakes at 150 yds from the greens. Would be a great help for those not used to the course.
Facilities in the clubhouse are basic, however there is a more pricey Fika cafe in the leisure complex (along with pool, spa and more). Currently building some lodges/houses next to the 1st tee and more money being spent is a good sign.

Played On 03/01/2023Good workout, poor greens
First time here with someone who had been before and said it was "quirky".
Very up and down, my fitness tracker suggested I climbed 42 flights of stairs! After one night of rain, the lower holes were very muddy and care had to be taken to stay on your feet. All greens were in operation, however all tees were on mats, up to 50 yds ahead of the normal tee boxes.
Mats were generally fine, however greens were generally poor - pock-marked (like a herd of deer had run over them). Made putting a bit of a lottery.
Would try it again in the summer, when hopefully conditions are better.
It was cheap (£14) and we were round in three hours as there were few people about.

Played On 11/04/2021Fast greens, slow play
A bit wet and windy to start, but cleared up later. Have played here many times before, but today too many fourballs slowed the pace of play (we were a two ball). Towards the end, the fourball in front of us walked off as even they thought it was too slow. Just made it back before the light faded.
Greens very quick still and general conditions fine considering the recent rain.
Of the blind tee shots (quite a few), for some reason, the 16th doesn't have a bell, so that adds to the delay as you have to wait until you think the group in front has got far enough ahead.

Played On 08/12/2021Good value, fair condition, almost deserted.
Not played here for five years. Not much has changed.
Greens fair, not too fast.
Fairways in good condition.
Tee boxes not that good, need a bit of work on them.
There are lots of bunkers on the course. Their condition varies though overall, they could also do with some work.
Thursday afternoon, quiet and round in under three hours. Won't be leaving it for five years again!
Southwell Golf Club
Played On 11/04/2020Challenging course, friendly welcome
Welcome was warm from the pro and we were sent out promptly.
The first nine are played within the circuit of the Southwell Race Course and therefore have a slightly artificial feel about them. Plenty of water hazards, including the signature 7th with its island green. Requires accuracy rather than distance as the racecourse limits the boundaries.
Second nine a complete contrast, a parkland course with tree-lined fairways and three holes with domed greens. The 10th could do with a bell to tell those behind the green is clear as you can't see it from the fairway due to a high bank.
Grass was long and there were lots of leaves on the fairways and rough, meaning several balls were lost as they just couldn't be found.
Play was slo as it was the last day before lockdown #2, but still round in 3½ hours as a two-ball and just before the light faded.
Golf was rubbish but would play again as the course has become a nemesis!

Played On 10/22/2018Welcoming and rewarding
Played here once before in the winter and it was quite wet. In late Autumn, with little recent rain, the course was in fantastic shape, though "lift and place" was available if required. Staff were welcoming and we teed off ahead of our booked time.
Most greens were in very good condition and fairways ran well due to the dry conditions. Playing after the morning rush, we virtually had the course to ourselves. Good job as the buggy route was sometimes quite tortuous - a few more buggy bridges needed over the stream that runs through the centre of the course. Otherwise, hard to fault.

Played On 06/14/2018A warm welcome, a getable course
Quiet in the middle of the day, middle of the week. Course condition was generally excellent, with well-groomed fairways, though the rough was sometimes challenging. Greens ran true and had a sensible pace. Warm welcome from the Pro who was very accommodating. Would definitely play again!

Played On 09/02/2016Putting Lottery
Greens (all 18) had been tined and sanded the week before and had not been rolled, so putting was a complete lottery. By the third, we'd decided a gimme was acceptable within a club length of the hole, it was that unpredictable. I know they have to do it, but all 18 holes in one go? Fairways were average, well cut, however lots of clumps of cuttings around. Rough was manageable though a couple of balls just couldn't be found.
