Heritage Hill Golf Club
Played On 06/27/2017In Great Shape!
The course is in incredible shape right now and is immaculately kept. With mostly wide open fairways it can be forgiving for hooks & slices and keeps the pace of play going.
The greens are in great shape, my only complaint is GOLFERS NOT REPAIRING BALL MARKS!.
the staff is attentive and they have a nice bar area and patio.
Long Run Golf Course
Played On 03/15/2015Getting Better
This course plays pretty long from the whites. The overall facilities are getting better. The front nine is pretty straight forward but pay attention to your approaches on the long par 4's and par 5's. Especially on the back - some of them can be tricky and play well to either the long hitter or smart course manager.
Hunting Creek Country Club
Played On 09/25/2014Immaculate
I made it to the match finals in a local league I play in. my opponent was a member and invited me to play.
This course is a gem if you can get on. The fairways are lush and the greens are flawless. We played from the White tees so I was a little outside my approach distances and it was tough to stick the greens.
Several false front an a ton of fairway and green side bunkers. Accurate play is a must because of protected approaches and several doglegs and false front.
Hope to get back soon!
Wooded View Golf Course
Played On 09/22/2014Wish more were like it
Have played here twice and have enjoyed it both times. I've found the staff to be extremely pleasant and courteous. They take great care of the course; the tees, fairways and greens looked great. Bunkers need a freshening or to be broken up - they are like portland cement on some holes. Like all public courses people tend not to repair their ballmarks on the green but that's on the players, not the course. I enjoy fixing them (both mine and others) as it helps me relax on the green. I try to fix at least three per green trying to make up for the lazy players that don't...
The course provides an accurate player a great chance to score but some of the holes are very tight so it will play harder for those with less control off the tee.
$24 dollars was what we paid (between noon and three I believe.)
While on the tee at hole number 4 we actually saw 3 BALD EAGLES in the sky above us! At one point they were only about 20 feet above us as two of them were fighting and kept loosing altitude. Very cool experience.
Really enjoy this course because of the amount of character it has. The back nine really requires good club selection and shot placement too as there are a lot of guarded greens with large trees and doglegs that you can't just grip it and rip it.
Glenmary Country Club
Played On 07/22/2014Lacking the basics
As others have said, the course is in rough shape but playable. Glenmary is an enjoyable design and can be tough. The teeboxes are in good shape, the fairways need some love but the greens are good (fast). The sandtraps are either really fluffy or darn near portland cement and the cart path will cause injury if you try to drive your cart on it.
After 5pm it's $20 for 18 and a cart so you can't beat it ~ it's daily rate of $35 is too steep for the shape it's in though.
Where this course lacks is the sheer basics to keep bringing golfers back. A course can't invest in itself without golfers, aka the lifeblood of its success, yet Glenmary struggles here.
Ironically they have a big sign stating they are having a Membership Drive.
It was a 98 heat index when we teed off. None of the water fountains in the clubhouse worked and they had an empty water jug sitting outside the clubhouse. there's no water anywhere to drink anywhere on the course and not even water in the ball-washers. The clubhouse said they would keep the jug out front full but didn't as when we made the turn there was nada. Walked inside to the bar/restaurant and had to wait as no one was around. Couldn't get water out of the fountain because they are all broken.
More frustrating was the fivesome in front of us that INCLUDED the course marshal! they played slow, searched for lost balls out in the woods and caused a back up across at least 5 holes. There is no reason a foursome shouldn't be able to finish 18 holes when teeing off at 5pm in 4hrs 30 minutes.
When we finally got close enough to them where they were on a tee box and we were on the green i asked one of the guys if they could speed it up (didn't even address the fivesome) and their response was for us to play two balls. There wasn't a group in front of them for at least two holes.
It was ridiculous. Will I be back?Yes - I've played this course since it opened and really enjoy it but can really understand why no one really wants too. I'll take people back as well i'll just make sure they have everything they need and don't rely on the clubhouse for anything.
there are plenty of better deals and even rougher courses but what they lack in shine they make up for in either customer service or making sure their golfers are taken care of.
Glenmary could learn a lot about that - if your course needs work your customer service and basics shouldn't especially if you are trying to succeed. Golfers will play a struggling course but not if they don't feel welcome.
Heritage Hill Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2014In Incredible Shape for mid-July!
This course is in amazing shape right now, you can tell the Heritage Hill team works incredibly hard keeping it in tip top shape.
The tee grounds look brand new, the fairways are lush and the greens are almost immaculate. at $40 dollars during the weekday, $25 after 5:30 and $60 on the weekends it's a deal anytime you pay less than $60. It looks and plays like a $100 dollar course without a doubt.
From them bringing you a cart in the parking lot, to the pro shop and their 10 minute gaps on the tee times this course is run right and is a value at anytime you play this.
It's a very challenging layout with a lot of elevation changes making club selection key. Most every green is well protected by medium height bunkers (a couple severe) so be confident in your sand game.
Henry County Country Club
Played On 05/25/2014What a GEM!!!
This course is beautiful - no if's, ands or but's about it. The staff is extremely courteous at every interaction. The fairways are lush and the greens look awesome. The greens are craz-ee FAST too - a mere tap sends it 5' further than what you were expecting.
Yardage is clearly marked, the sand in the bunkers looks to be brand new and they have a ton of marked sprinkler heads with the yardage on them. You can tell the team running the place pay attention to the little details.
The layout is challenging with some well laid out par 4's and 5's. Seems like most of the par 3 are 180+ and several over 200. Like most golf courses these days the only thing that could be improved upon is golfers repairing their ball marks on the greens. I guess it's a lost art anymore...
All in all a wonderful course that although is a 40 minute drive from Louisville is well worth the $36 (with cart on Sunday) and I will definitely be back soon!
Pennsylvania Run Golf Course
Played On 05/24/2014What a Deal!!!
Have lived close-by for 40 years and hadn't played Penn Run in all that time. Played it for the first time last year and loved it and I keep going back.
It's a neat experience as it harkens back to the days before tee-times and debit/credit cards - they take neither! First come first served and bring cash (they have an ATM in the shop).
It's a mom & pop (or family run outfit) so it's not your typical clubhouse. The staff is usually helping their kids with homework or doing some family type stuff off to the side but it just adds to the ambiance of the place which makes it so awesome. $10 to walk and $25 (w/a $1 refund per rider when you turn in the key) is the best deal in town for sure.
Also, no 'pro-shop' to speak off. There's usually a couple tubs of recovered balls for sale, some gloves, etc. and there always seems to be a couple of odd clubs for sale but are always a great deal. (ie - a left handed Adams hybrid for $10).
The ball carousel is how you determine who tee's off next. Early weekend mornings are rough but later in the day it moves right along. The fairways aren't bent grass or Bermuda, it's regular old Fescue or blue grass and is in great shape. The greens are lush and sl-o-o-o-w. Give you good practice on putting the line.
The front nine is pretty straight forward, not many layups required but has a lot of trees on the either side. They keep the grass short in the trees though. The back nine is much more technical requiring better course management for your next shot. The trees are there but the grass in longer within them making it more difficult for sure.
Two of my playing partners were first timers on Penn Run and thoroughly enjoyed it as well.
If you live anywhere near Louisville this is a must play!!!
Mearns - East & South at Quail Chase Golf Club
Played On 04/21/2014Will grow in well soon
QC has always been a very nice course. The three different nine hole courses are laid out very differently and provide many different challenges.
It was a much better value in the past it seems though. I got a $20 hot now deal on Golf Now otherwise the $40 midday Monday fee and $50 weekend rate is way to steep for this course. Not sure what they are thinking with these prices.
Fairways were still dormant so it made it a little tough to get clean shots but you can tell it's going to grow in very well. Brand new fluffy sand in the bunkers, greens weathered the winter well and tee boxes look great too.
Love this course just wish they would price it competitively to other courses in the area rather than at some private club rate.
Covered Bridge Golf Club
Played On 03/30/2014Great Course!
I've played this course twice in the last 3 months. Both days it was after a pretty steady week of rains so the course was soggy but of course nothing they can control.
The layout is fairly tight but the landing areas are clear of trees and such that would catch your average hacker. Smart course management is key to a successful round, your typical grip-it and rip-it style play will make you layup on your second shot on par fives.
It's a gorgeous course with rolling hills, The Covered Bridge, streams running through out and lined with beautiful homes.
I'll play it again for sure - it's a great course!
i'll definately play it again
Bardstown Country Club - Maywood Course
Played On 11/13/2013A Great Course all-Around
It had been a couple years since I had the opportunity to play Maywood and i've been able to play it twice this year; once in the Summer and once in November. Both times I had a great experience and the course looks simply fantastic.
The greens were in great shape both times (but its the players who fail to repair ballmarks - UUUGGHH! that cause the biggest issue. My pet peeve - I actually like repairing them so there was plenty of 'fun' to be had).
The course is challenging and well laid out. A golfer has to play smart golf rather than grip it and rip it to score well. Excellent scenery and some nice elevation changes make for a nice round.
The staff has always been super friendly and the Pro-shop has some really good deals. A shout out to Norman in he pro-shop for making a 1 hour frost delay go by quicly because of some intersting conversation.
An all around great course that is worth the driver from Louisville.
