Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
Played On 04/01/2022Great layout but...
I've been playing at Lonnie Poole literally since it opened. It's a great course, and I recommend everyone play it. It can be visually intimidating, but really isn't too challenging when played from the right set of tees. The layout is 2nd to none, there are a multitude of great individual holes and for that alone, it's worth you playing. Now the but... But I find the conditions to be average at best. The course gets a tremendous amount of play, to be fair, but still there are areas of the course that make you question the price you payed to play. They've struggled with green collars and bunker collars in specific. I personally wish they would not have messed with the long grass around the bunkers, that feature alone made the course truly unique, but they were totally renovated years back to make the course more playable. Overall, the course has been great for growth of the game in the area, so I'm not here to trash the staff or anyone, but I also feel like this fantastic Arnold Palmer layout deserves a bit more TLC.
Tot Hill Farm Golf Club
Played On 05/24/2020Challenging design, but fun to play.
Tot Hill Farm is a challenging course. My partner and I got our butts kicked. Despite our high scores, we had an immense amount of fun. It's amazing how such a difficult slope results from just 6500 yards from the tips. The yardage book was really helpful for us, definitely recommend getting one if you haven't played here before. I think the most challenging aspect of the course is the non level lies that you tend to get, and the elevated greens are a beast to reach accurately. My personal favorite hole was #12. "The Old Dam Hole" Spectacular par 4, with a good drive, you only have 120ish yards into the green over the water. The par 3s are all spectacular as well. I must say that I really didn't like the last 2 holes. 17 is a wide open drive. I hit my best drive of the day, but the pin placement was ridiculous. Only a few places off the back at the most narrow section of the green. 18 hole is a par 5 up hill to a postage stamp green up against the main road and there is no logical place to hit the 2nd shot to lay up. Overall, A blast to play, and good value presuming high scores won't ruin your day.
Keith Hills Golf Club - White Course
Played On 6/28/2013Great value
Keith Hills is a great course to play. There are 3 different 9-hole courses to choose from, although one is closed for renovations now. Each course is very well maintained with moderately fast mini verde bermuda greens. It is challenging from the long tees and moderately difficult from the middle tees. Great practice area with putting green, range, sand bunker and chipping green. Also, download the keith hills app for a great gps/scorecard function
Eagle Ridge Golf Club
Played On 6/7/2013Challenging, but fair golf holes
Pros:
-Beautiful setting
-Lots of risk / reward shot options, blind landing areas
-Great putting surfaces
Cons:
-Slow pace of play
-Crab grass in tee boxes and fairways
-Took over 10 mins to get a hot dog!
Palmer at Woodlake Country Club
Played On 5/30/2013Great Weekday Value!
The course is set in a beautiful location! We played the Maples designed course and it was well taken care of, great fairways, moderately fast greens. The first several holes required smartly-placed tee shots with hybrids or irons whereas the back nine requires longer drives. Best of all, the round cost $16 on a wednesday afternoon (golf now hot deal). I think the course plays a little easier than its rating suggests but there are some risk/reward challenging holes. Bottom line is that I would certainly recommend this course.
