Mattawang Golf Club
Played On 09/26/2015Nothing special but that's just fine with me
Its your typical course kept in very good condition. I would say the fairways and greens were in tip top shape given the drought in NJ.
The staff were accommodating and friendly. They had rangers come by twice to check the pace of play. I really like courses that understand that the one thing that I can't stand is a 5-6 hr round. Anything they can do to reduce that is greatly appreciated.
Douglaston Golf Club
Played On 09/07/2015Tough course for a high handicap
First time here and I was pleasantly surprised at the course and the layout. Very hilly course and small greens demand smart approach shots and perhaps conservative play. Many of the par 3s are deceptively difficult and challenging.
The course is very tight meaning a few tees and greens converge close together. I pulled a tee shot on a par 3 landing onto another group at their tee box. I've never seen a tee box in line of play so close to another tee box.
White at Eisenhower Park Golf Course
Played On 06/14/2015Typical public course
The white course is pretty straightforward with no surprises, hazards etc. The adjoining fairways can be a bit hectic with balls flying in from errant tee shot. And with that you can usually find any off target balls. They have double par 3 holes to speed up play.
The greens are all elevated with front bunkers. There were a few greens that were a complete mess. The grass is dead in various spots and any putts going through this stuff is bouncing left and right.
Pace of play is minimum 4.5 hrs. The staff is nice enough and never gives me any reasons to complain.
While they do not have a cart-girl riding around with food and drinks they do have vending areas.
Kissena Park Golf Course
Played On 10/19/2014Short but sweet
I never considered playing here in the past due to the short yardage 4K something. But I was tired one day and was hoping to get a 9 in. Came across this and decided to give it a go.
There are a lot of difficult par 3s and decent length par 4s here. The course is pretty hilly and with the elevation its not as easy as one would expect. The grounds were in good shape for a city course.
The staff were really nice and helpful. The pace of play was great as we were the only group out at the time, lucky for us. But this is a city course so expect long waits as others have mentioned.
Clearview Park Golf Course
Played On 10/13/2014Slow but fun
We were the 3rd group out in the morning but it still took just about 5 hours to play 18 here. The tee boxes are very chewed up from the sheer volume of players everyday. Fairways are full of divots that no one fills. Greens are actually in pretty good shape but I still took the time to repair other people's ball marks.
If time is not crucial you should give Clearview a go. It a casual and laid back facility which encourages low stress golf. You will have plenty of time to think over your shots. But if you're in a rush or if you are impatient do not come here.
The Golf Club at Middle Bay
Played On 09/27/2014A good course but needs work
The club house is vacant except for the pro shop and it just has an eerie feel to it. Perfect location for a Halloween theme golf outing.
The course is in good condition but you'll find bare spots here and there. I really liked the course regardless because it has character, its definitely not boring.
The only problem I had was the lack of apparent hole markers at the tee box. Twice we got a little confused as to which way to go since the cart paths lead you to several tee boxes in the general area. Not a big deal.
Lido Golf Club
Played On 09/07/2014Great fun and very challenging
The course is in ok condition but many fairways had ropes restricting access to shots that land there. Greens were in top shape.
I didn't think the wind was too much of a bother but it definitely makes you think twice about clubbing up. The 16th was as tough and challenging as advertised. Will have to play it several times before I can decide what's the best way to attack it.
Staff was friendly and extremely helpful. Definitely recommend people to try it out if you want to experience something out of the ordinary. But playing here too often will probably jack up your handicap.
Sandpiper at Spring Lake Golf Club
Played On 07/03/2014Defintely coming back
The course was in really good condition. The holes were pretty straight and few if any hazards or water. There was no starter so I was told just to head out. I ended up pairing myself up with another group to speed things up. The pace was decent and there was a ranger checking on the pace.
The greens were ridiculously slow and I had a hard time with long putts. The fairways were average and missed shots easy to find. If this place wasn't so far from my home I'd come here more often.
They have electric carts equipped with onboard tablets showing hole info and GPS yardage info. Just for that I should bump this up to 5 stars. But this is not championship course so it gets a 4 but a highly recommended one.
Thank you for playing Mattawang. We are glad you enjoyed the fine conditions. It has been a tough year but our new grounds crew has done a great job!
