Labor Day golf - fun, busy, bumpy

We got a last minute tee time for Labor Day unexpected when a hotdeal showed up on Golfnow.com. It showed the option to walk at an earlier start, so we booked a 3 some. It is a alluring course due to its uniqueness. Some holes just make you want to figure out how to play them well.

It is a tight, unusual course with scoring potential, yet the hidden risks may not be worth it on every hole. You have to pick your battles.

At the check-in, they told us there was a hiccup that allowed us to walk before 1p on a holiday or weekend. It's a short course. I was confident we would keep up. They blocked the 4th spot, since they were concerned a riding player would not want to play as slow as us. Well, the starter said 12 minutes/hole = 3h 36m. Hmm, doable, but could a full tee sheet do that on a tight, overlapping layout?

We played and found a walking pace was well faster than the tee sheet could allow. We waited on most of the holes which was fine by us. Still, the intrigue of a new course for 2 of us kept us engaged. It was a fun day. #7's blue tee is blind to #7's red tees, so we teed off before the group ahead of us finished teeing off...oops. Some of the red tees are very, very short allowing my wife to get near the green on the tee shot. There were a couple holes where driver was too much from the blue tee for an average player (#15, 251y, par 4, #16 downhill 275y par 4, blue tees). The greens were heavily top dressed and distinctly bumpy on some holes like #4.

Expect a bit of a wild ride if you play this course, especially on a busy day.

Forget the scorecard if you worry about your handicap.

It was a fun day. Happy Labor Day!

A stimulating, quirky short course nudging course management

This was my 2nd time on this course. I forgot much of it. The course is only 5889y from blue, 5467y from white, and 4339y from red. The unique aspect of the course is where your tee shots from #7 and #11 blue tees cross over the middle of the lake...weird, cool.

We got paired up with a fun couple from Santiago, Chile. In all honesty, you can/should likely play much of this course without your driver if you hit average distance. The course can get penal if you put yourself out of position or find yourself unable to locate you shot which rolled 50 yards out of site and maybe out of play. Know your game and your go-to-shots to keep your ball in play!

#13 is a good example. You can't see over the knoll where folks coming down #17 put the fear of hitting a fellow player into drawing/hooking one into the junk. Then you have a blind shot after your forced drop over taller bushes onto a right sloping hill...into another penalty area.

The greens are trickier than they look and green speeds may be matched to the noticeable slope on the greens. There are funky lies just off the fairway and just off the greens, too. Put on your scramble hat to save your score.

Note, ladies may find the short holes birdie-able or maybe eagle-able. V had an eagle putt from maybe 6 feet after a perfectly judged tee shot on #17!

Apparently, the pumphouse got washed into a pond, and a dam broke, so they are doing pretty well given all that rain and its sequela. Walking is a good workout here in the heat for such a short course. The driving range was out of commission. Finally, they do have an 11 hole rate if you need 29 holes or a shorter day.

Online you can find some scorecards with a par of 69. The current scorecard says par 71. Blue: 67.7/122; white 66/107, red 64.4/108.

Recent aeration, bumpy greens

I like Foothills GC. The course seems to have been hit a bit hard this winter. The greens were recently aerated, and they were heavily top dressed. Still it was a good day. There are some blind spots, so be aware. You could get hit inadvertently. The black tees are not too long for an average bogey player.

Recently aerated course, windy, odd response at desk

We have played Coyote Creek many times and enjoyed it. We chose CC GC due to mutual convenience this time. We knew the course had been aerated recently. Given that it played reasonably. The tear inducing winds negatively affected play for the 2 ladies and one older gentleman in our group, which made them decide to stop after 9. I preferred to finish 18 I had booked this 210p time and noted the walking rates of $21/9 & $27/18. When we asked for a weather check for the back 9, they said we got the 9 hole rate/twilight rate and would not issue a weather check. Looking at the receipt, they charged us $25, not the listed $21 or $27. While we usually get very friendly service at Coyote Creek, this experience did not match our previous experiences. It makes me think about getting the rates confirmed before starting to play on iffy wind days. Still it's worth playing, just confirm plan B rates before you start.

Early season golf, walking only, sweet!

The course is in good shape given the challenging winter we had. The check-in was smooth. The range was open. The starter was friendly. The temps were chilly to start, but it warmed up to shed layers at the turn. The redesign is quite nice. The fairways were a bit tight, but it is early. The greens were a bit variable in speed and they're were a decent number of roll changing ball marks, which added some challenge up scoring. A good, enjoyable round made nicer with walking only.

The course survived this winter well

This was an early round for this winter. The offer of a reasonable rate with the Golfpass monthly discount made it reasonable to play on a weekend. The check-in was smooth, the hitting nets were decent enough, the starter was friendly, the course was in pretty good conditions given this winter. There were no dead spots in the fairways or greens. The greens rolled well and pretty fast. The pace of play was ~4h. Walking helped keep me warm. Good day

Good course for a winter round

We visited from out of town with lightened bags. This course seemed to fit the bill from the online descriptions: exec 18, pretty setting, flat, walkable, and open. It was all that. The setting for the course is quite engaging, especially for being in an urban environment. The Bermuda grass seemed to be in dormancy but still remained a challenge. The moisture levels, especially compared to out West, made for receptive greens, sometimes bump and splat. The traps were a bit more like mud traps with some standing water. The greens rolled pretty fast and fairly true. Pace of play was a bit over 4 hours, just fine. This course is definitely walkable, and walking is probably a nicer way to experience the course. A light travel bag is likely enough. Enjoy!

Irrigation project affected conditions

This is a good course when the conditions are good. They are doing a 1st irrigation project since it opened. Thus, 2 holes were not available for play, bummer - holes #10 & 5. This makes for a bit of extra challenge for walkers. The layout always makes the course a challenge, but there are some spots in the grass and fairways...and even on some of the greens that are suboptimal, to be honest. Delicate shots near the greens are a bit extra challenging. One golfer in the group thought the bunkers had construction dirt, but it still felt like sand to me. Still, a nice day with pleasant company can make it worth it. You just can't be in the 18 holes or nothing mindset.

Better than expected conditions

It was a cold day forecasted, so I expected a light tee sheet, which materialized. The temps were 36F, and the leaves had mostly fallen, so I expected somewhat borderline conditions. I was quite pleasantly surprised to find the course in really quite good conditions. The groundskeepers were doing a good job with the fairways and greens. They were even doing quite well blowing the leaves away from the general playing areas...bonus in the fall! I walked to stay warm, which helped. With the light tee sheet, it made playing #11 and #16 feel safer, since they are pretty blind for walkers. The greens rolled quite fast, I guess that's normal for Willis Case. The course is pretty short, so it went quite quickly. I almost wished I had enough time for a second lap. The folks were very friendly, too.

Recent aeration, firm conditions, tight lies, challenging putting

We played on the 3rd day they opened after aerating the fairways & greens. They did a good job on making the fairways playable & cleaned off a lot of the plugs. The greens were fairly heavily top dressed with full, hollow plugs which will help in the long run but challenge your putting numbers early on.

The ground is fairly firm, likely due to early season conditions and no or limited watering so far. So drives can really go! A couple were the longest I've ever hit on some holes, like #5 (311) & #12 (330)... older golfer here...unintentionally hitting through the group ahead of us, sorry!

The frost delay was 1:45, but it was down to 40 min by 1p. That meant the tee sheet was compressed ahead of us...which led to plenty of time to enjoy the pleasant weather.

Good, windy day with lots of open spaces to play

The forecast was for 20-30 mph winds. Mother Nature didn't disappoint. It was chilly starting at 40F. A good ski hat, wind shell, and double gloves made for a comfortable temperature. The winds made some drives go 165y and some 3 woods go 300y. Putting was actually affected by the winds, especially downhillers. The grass is greening up nicely. The lack of crowds made for a relaxing day. Overall, if you can tolerate the wind, the course feels almost like your own private playground.

Good conditions, fast greens, challenging course

It's been 2 years since we played Todd Creek, so we forgot some of the intricacies of the layout. The tough golf winter left the course in tight, fast conditions. The course was listed as cart path only, so we walked, though we saw others riding on the course. The greens were the fastest we've seen this season, making for tough distance control for putting. The fairways were quite tight, which some will like. The rough was fairly benign, sometimes leading to teed up lies. The bunkers were in much better conditions than I recalled from previous rounds, nice!..though the early season golfer might just say there are too many of 'em. The day was beautiful. Thanks!

Good, solid regulation 9 with a straightforward feel

This is one of our regularly played courses, so we know it fairly well. The course survived the winter better than expected. The fairways are in good shape. The greens feel close to normal and are receptive. The popularity of the course is well founded, since you can get in 9 of a regulation course in tighter time windows, so that's sort of harder to find. The rates went up, and weekend rates do occur. The punchcard is the best value if you plan to play here regularly. The staff is always great here.

Good day to play when Denver's courses are snowed in!

We kind of got an itch to play some golf. Canon City was our last outing to play when all the nearby courses were too white. Amazingly, there was basically no snow in Ft. Morgan. The check-in was seamless. The staff was friendly. The temps were good enough to play with layers, hat, double gloves. The conditions on the course were pretty good, though #7 & #16 had temporary greens, and #8 had half the green covered. Still, can you complain about January golfing outside in Colorado? There were others out there. The rough provided some challenges. #9's tee box is blind to where you need to aim, so figure it out before you go to that one...or you may be yelling out "where do I aim?" to your spouse. Oh yeah, 3rd time there...I don't think there's a single sand bunker. The holes are fairly straight, reminiscent of a different era. The layout will make some of these shorter holes play longer and the downhillers play shorter. Sadly, Elaine's Greek restaurant is closed for good, bummer! Good times still. Thanks!

Good day, better green conditions 1 week later

We played the Gold course again a week later. They top dressed the greens which made them far more reasonable to putt than the prior week when it was hard to keep the ball on the green on #4 & #9 in particular. The check-in was a breeze. The staff was super nice. There was a frost delay, but they caught up from 1:45 delayed to maybe 30 min delayed by our 1150 tee time. The pace of play was fine. We got the round in before dark, nice! The conditions were pretty good for late November. Thanks!

Late fall golf, a blessing

The opportunity to play golf in mid-November in short sleeves is a big plus. The check-in was seamless. They were very nice to me at the range. A frost delay bunched us golfers, but I'm not one to complain. We went off within 10 min of our scheduled tee time at 1110. There were some greens where the Stimp meter would probably touch 13-14...like #4 & #9. If you don't hole it, you might get lucky to get stopped by a pine needle or not. Mark 'em quickly. The fairways were healthy enough, the leaves were mostly dispersed, and fun was had by most.

A note to the crew, be careful where you cut some holes, pick relatively flatter spots for the winter cups!

Good day, good course, good rate

We were looking for a course north of the Denver area to split the drive and a course not too demanding and still interesting enough to make the drive worth it. Coyote Creek fit the bill. The check in was a breeze. The fairways were in good condition. The greens were still healing from aeration. We enjoyed the day out. Thanks!

Fun day on an aerated course

This is a solid course that fit the bill for the day. We wanted a place not too hard, not too easy where we could hit a driver a bunch of times. The check-in was easy. There were signs on the door about higher COVID-19 rates in the county, but no mask was required. The greens had been aerated and top dressed 4-5 days prior, so putting was more challenging than normal as expected with the aeration warning. The rest of the course was in good condition. The day turned out to be a good choice for a course. Thanks!
