Queen's Harbour Yacht & Country Club
Played On 03/14/2024Great Layout, Above Average Condition
QH was in the best shape I've seen it in at this time of the year. The greens, fairways & tee boxes were excellent. It is a challenging but fun course to play. I plan on looking on GN in the next several weeks and taking some of our club members down for a round. I was the planner for 2 foursomes during TPC Week '24 and this course was in our Top 2 for the week. Thank you QH.
Hidden Hills Golf Course
Played On 03/13/2024Great Clubhouse & Course Design
Nice clubhouse with much better lunch service & food quality than you find at most area courses. The Pro Shop staff & Head Pro were very courteous and engaging. Unfortunately, the condition of the greens, tee boxes and fairways on the front nine were far below what you find at most area courses. The back nine greens were much better and so was everything else on the back nine. I put together 5 rounds for 8 players during TPC Week '24 and I took a big hit from our entire group for the Hidden Hills round. I had played HH in early 2019 and it was in so much better condition. I do not like giving negative reviews to courses when I know those good people are doing their best. However, it was obvious they have been constrained by a lack of financial support needed to keep this wonderful layout in acceptable condition. We will not return next year unless I go down and personally scout it out. Sorry, Hidden Hills, but you have been & could be again, so much better.
Bay Breeze Golf Course
Played On 02/20/2017Shotgun Start Tournament Right Before My TTime
The staff was extremely helpful in getting me out as soon after my TTime (1:00PM) as possible, but it was still at least 1:30 before I teed off. There was a shotgun start of a big crowd, mostly high-HC or non-golfers, playing in a Pres Day golf tournament. The staff explained they were a deployed Air Nat'l Guard unit from Alaska. I am fine with that, but they allowed them to start their tournament late and that pushed everyone else back. The staff told me this group comes every year and they play very slow. The staff should have probably taken the GolfNow times down in advance because it took us well over 3 hours to play the front. I quit after nine extremely dissatisfied. I hate negatively reviewing this course because it is on an Air Force base and I am a retired Air Force officer; but, the truth needs to be told. I will only focus on the course from here out. The greens are OK, a little slow, but very puttable. The fairways and rough are not so good. I don't think any part of this course has seen much weedkiller in at least a year. As usual, the afternoons at Bay Breeze bring strong winds off the Gulf which make several of the par 4s on the front difficult to reach in 2. I wish I could have played the back, but the tournament had the course clogged-up worse than anything I have ever seen on a golf course---and I play over 100 rounds a year and see a lot.
Finally, golfers who book this course on GolfNow that do not have some acceptable form of a DoD ID need to call the pro shop ahead of time and make sure to get on the Visitors Pass List at the gate. The rest of my ttime group from GolfNow (who I did not know) were turned away at the gate to the Air Force Base. Like I said, the very professional staff took care of me and paired me up with some fine young men, but just a tough, frustrating afternoon with not nearly enough golf as I was hoping. I am paying the premium and playing Golden Bear tomorrow. Sorry Bay Breeze, but you must do better before I come back.
Pine Hills Golf Club
Played On 05/02/2016Super Friendly & Welcoming Staff---Superb Value
Much tougher layout than I was expecting. All of the Athens area courses we normally play were closed or booked so we gave Pine Hills a shot and glad we did. The course is better than we had heard in every way and the staff's reputation for friendliness is well-earned. Thank you, Ma'am. The downside was the greens were OK but too slow to putt with any accuracy. The tee boxes were also chewed up on most tees. All-in-all, the price is right, you will feel welcomed, and I would play it again if my other options were not available or too pricy.
The Chimneys Golf Course
Played On 04/16/2016Great Views From Almost Every Tee Box
Even though the course had just been "punched & sanded," we had a great time on this very playable course. 76 (White Tees) is my best round since the 90s, and the views from the T Boxes just inspired me to that score. The use of natural rocks & boulders to shape and frame some of the teeing areas was impressive. You will use every club in your bag, but 220 yard drives will leave you with short irons on most par 4s. I did have two par 4s where I was still 190 plus out. I am a 13 HC and definitely will play this course again. Single digit HC golfers should play from the (Tips) back tees.
Wachesaw Plantation East
Played On 04/06/2016Greens Are Gone
THE GREAT: Friendliest & most effective staff I've ever encountered. The young gentleman in the pro shop was extra friendly and informative and the gentlemen unloading your bags and starting the golfers were phenomenally well-aware of all arriving golfers and were getting folks started early. They were courteous and absolutely the most competent I've encountered in more than 45 years of playing golf. I saw then multiple times during the round greeting everyone and making sure the pace of play was right---and it was. Fairways, tees and all areas except greens were very nice.
THE BAD: The course lost its greens over the winter. 13-14 of the greens were more than 80% bare. There was a sand, seed mixture, but they are essentially all 2-putt automatics. I would not recommend this course until they get the greens back. That's too bad, since it is a great layout with the best staff.
Highland Walk at Victoria Bryant
Played On 04/02/2016Not Many Level Lies
Better than expected in terms of beauty and harder than expected in terms of difficulty. The fairways range from a few that are very wide to several that are tight. Once your ball rolls off the tilted fairways into the natural woods, you are not likely to find it. I had more lost balls here than I have had in my last 30 plus rounds at the UGA course. Most lies are not going to be flat, which makes for a nice looking course, but definitely contributes to the difficulty factor. The first two par 4s are short, but the rest of them are "Big Boy" par 4s. I will play this course anytime, but the next time will be for revenge. I'm a 12 HC and shot 98, the highest score since I was a pre-teen (I'm 61). The GA State Park courses are to be complimented, and this one is no exception. I'm a walker, but we rode. Good call. It would have been easier to walk 10 miles on the Appalachian Trail, but that's OK---loved the ride and the scenery. The friendly staff made a difference too. They had a tournament going on but got us out ahead of our ttime and made sure we got around with no delay from the tournament. Thanks. We will be back---for revenge.
Chateau Elan Golf Club - Woodlands Course
Played On 03/15/2016The Woodlands-A Great Layout
Loved the course and the lady behind the counter in the pro shop was very personable and helpful. Course condition was excellent, considering all Georgia courses in this area are currently in transition from winter-to-spring. Not to sound like I have never seen a large home, but I have never seen so many large (very large) homes around a golf course. To the designer's credit, they are never in play and only there to marvel at. I would be a billionaire if I had a penny for every brick on just the houses we saw on the front nine. You are several miles from the clubhouse after nine, and the Woodlands earns it name on the way back to the clubhouse as the mansions are replaced by the natural, woody & hilly setting---but the drink cart did appear several times. Riding is key---definitely not a good course to walk. There are lots of long, but scenic cart rides between greens and tees. I'm currently A 13 HC (most rounds at UGA) and shot 79 with 3 birdies---I probably haven't had 3 birdies this year at UGA. The greens were big, rolled true, and were slower than what I am accustomed to, but I played an inspired round due to great views from the tee boxes. Definitely will play this course again...
Thank you very much for the 4 star review! We are pleased to hear that you will definitely play the course again and we look forward to seeing you!
The Creek At Hard Labor State Park
Played On 02/02/2016Nature at It's Best!
A pleasant round on a very challenging layout. The Creek at Hard Labor was one of the most remote (a good thing) and pristine natural settings I have ever played golf on. The views from every tee were terrific. Accuracy off the tee is my strength right now and I stayed in all but one fairway, but six months ago this course would have destroyed me. Overall it is not a long course, but the yardage is misleading. Greens are elevated so you won't be rolling anything on. There are several par 4s that play the proverbial driver and 3-W for the average--to-long golfer. The 3's are short and the 3rd shot on 5s are short, but most par 4s are all you would ever want. Just a beautiful setting.
The Georgia Club - Chancellors Red/Black Course
Played On 2/6/2013Great layout, well-maintained
The staff was super friendly from the moment we drove up; welcomed us to the club & pro-shop and througout check-in. They made us feel wanted and important. Best in area for hospitality.
Hi geechieboy - Because of the heavy rainfall and weather conditions this past fall and winter, we have eight Tif Eagle greens that suffered turf damage. While conditions have improved this spring, we still expected a better transition than where we are today.
While these eight greens are not in optimal playing conditions for April, the greens are still playable. To assist in improving how these greens look and to promote the golf ball rolling better, we have decided to keep these greens top-dressed with green sand. We are thankful the rest of the course including the other 10 greens are in good condition.
With warmer weather ahead, we will continue to see improved conditions and will be back to normal sooner than later. We expect the greens to be fully recovered before the end of the spring season.
