Maryland National Golf Club
Played On 09/24/2023Fun round
I don't play here as much as I would like, but always enjoy my round here. It's a very good layout! Winds & rain all morning, so the course was practically empty when we started out at noon. The course is always in fine shape, the greens are true and fast (even wet), and the staff is friendly. What's not to like? My only complaint this time was we had to go on-line to get the lower rate; guy on phone wouldn't offer it up to my partner who hosts a large outing there every year. Oh well.
Maryland National Golf Club
Played On 09/19/2018Always superb!
Maryland National is an outstanding layout that is very well maintained.. And even with the recent rains (it was cart path only), there were very few washout areas or GUR areas. The folks here are SO nice and helpful. I always enjoy my time at Md Nat'l. If you find a deal time here, don't pass it up!
Stonewall Golf Club at Lake Manassas
Played On 07/05/2018Play Stonewall at least once
Stonewall is a fabulous golf course. Great condiitions, fast & true greens, excellent staff, and picturesque vistas over the lake. Not sure why they didn't have a beverage cart out on the course on a hot Thursday afternoon, but the staff brought us a cooler of bottled water to ensure we were ok. Typical above & beyond service from the folks at Stonewall. They definitely achieve the "private club for a day" vibe, maybe better than anyone else in the DC area.
If you haven't played this one yet, you should! My guess is it won't be a one-time thing...
Glade Valley Golf Club
Played On 06/29/2018Nice course - excellent value
I like this course, but it seems everyone & their brother decided to come to Walkersville on 6/29 for a round of golf before the heat wave came. The round took a little more than 5 hours, which is the slowest pace of play (for me) in several years... It's normally not so crowded...
This is a very nice parkland course with some very challenging greens, true and fast.
I was mainly disappointed that the food & beverage service was closed when we finished - at 3:45pm on a Friday???
The value is outstanding, but no beverage cart and no clubhouse food/beverage service on a prime golf day gives me pause when considering when I'll next return.
Maple Run Golf Course
Played On 06/28/2018Some funky holes, but worth the price!
At Maple Run, almost all of the challenge is on the greens.
It's a nice parkland layout, and aside from a couple of truly funky holes, it's a good course. The greens were in very good shape at the end of June, and they can be quite testy.
There isn't much to the clubhouse, but the folks are quite friendly!
Definitely a value course.
Marlton Golf Club
Played On 06/21/2018good layout - needs some work. Excellent value
This is a nice layout in need of some maintenance work. The cart path does wind through some subdivision homes, but rarely are there houses near the actual course. My 2nd time playing and I do like the course. Given the price, I can put up with some marginal tee boxes and several patchy fairways. Not everyone can.
Marlton Golf Club
Played On 06/15/2018Bargain course - needs work
The layout is pretty good. The course conditions are not, especially the tee boxes. I always tee my ball up, so that wasn't much of a big deal for me. It appears they are trying to improve the conditioning, but it still needs some work. For the low fees I paid, it was overall worth it. Not worth the full rate, though.
My main complaint was their approach to customer service. Upon arrival one hour before my tee time, I noticed the sign indicating GolfNow customers could not tee more than 15 minutes before their scheduled time. OK. So I order a large bucket for warm-ups (that was the plan anyway). But the lady checking me in at the snack bar (no pro shop) says they have no cart for me, so I have to hoof it to the range (can't offer me a ride?)... Then, ~10 minutes later, the starter comes up to me to indicate it's time to play - 35 minutes before my tee time. I'm 1/3 through the large bucket. No offer to discount that cost; just, "you'll be playing with that gentlemen over there". Jeez. Nope, sorry, I'm not done with my warm-ups. Ten minutes later, the starter sends over another gentlemen to inform me I'll be playing with him instead, and it's time to tee off. This is now 25 minutes before my scheduled tee time. Okay, so I'm leaving a bunch of balls in the bucket, but let's go. Luckily, my cart mate was a fine partner, and I wound up enjoying his company throughout the round.
I recommend this course only if you, like me, are a bargain hunter. It was worth $15, but not sure whether I'll be back or not. The course has the potential to be pretty darn good. I don't know whether the management has the stuff to make it happen.
Redgate Golf Course
Played On 06/07/2018Love it or Hate it
Some of my usual playing partners refuse to join me at RedGate, as the layout IS a bit quirky, but I really like this course (with the exception of #16 - that hole is messed up!). There is a good variety of holes, the conditioning is almost always very good, and the greens roll true. The course is quite hilly, so a cart is highly recommended.
The folks at RedGate are very nice, and the pace of play is quite good in the mornings, but the course can get crowded in the afternoons.
Clustered Spires Golf Course
Played On 02/28/2018Nice February round
I've always enjoyed playing at Clustered Spires. It's a good layout, and in season, they really go the extra steps to make it an upscale experience. Obviously, they aren't going to be as fully staffed in February... The course was in good condition given the recent weather, but there is construction that has one hole closed and the following hole is split into two. Not ideal, but ok. Wish they would have mentioned something on the website. On a related note, Monocacy Blvd is closed to traffic, so you may need to plan an extra 5-10 minutes travel time.
My "staff friendliness" score dropped on this particular round due to having to wait until my official tee time even though I arrived ~90 minutes prior to my time and there were plenty of open spots (even open tee times). I kind of get that, but by the time I was finally at the first tee, the course was now crowded and the pace of play was much slower than had I been allowed to start when I was ready. Oh well... At least the pace wasn't so slow that I had to end my round early (which at times I was concerned about).
Blue Mash Golf Course
Played On 02/21/2018This is a very nice & challenging layout. The course was in very good condition for February, the staff is quite friendly, and the 19th hole has a good selection (try the Blizzard!)... My primary complaint with Blue Mash is that there are much better values around. I'm glad I played this course again (it had been a long time), but it won't be in my normal rotation unless a bargain pops up on GN. My only other complaint is that there is no course layout on the scorecard, no hole layouts on the hole signs, and no GPS in the cart to indicate distances to hazards. If you don't have a range finder, either print out the hole layouts from their website, or purchase a yardage book (or take your chances).
Maryland National Golf Club
Played On 02/20/2018Great course - excellent conditions for winter
The course was in very good shape for February. It's a tremendous layout & many holes require a risk/reward decision. There are some holes where local knowledge really matters (e.g., it's safest/easiest to use your 135yd club twice on #16), but the GPS system can really help. There are some beautiful vistas (take your time at the #11 tee box), and their 19th hole is a good one - some good beers on tap and friendly service.
Hi Mr. McGlade, thank you for your review. We do have a free yardage book available in the golf shop - I'm sorry the staff did not bring it to your attention. With the availability of gps phone apps and rangefinders, we have elected to keep technology out of the golf carts. Lastly, we usually have nice low rates available for those that book ahead online. Cheers!
